I notice that here, on this board (I am new), Cheating is for the weak and Dan Simpson is a curse word.

Hooray!

I play a lot of BG2, and I havent cheated past the original 10 minute thrill of being able to blast everything in my path with CTRL-Y.

The real enthralling gameplay comes from the strategizing and brainwork that this game requires. I know far too many a player in my neighborhood who only has his level 40 fighter due to the CLUA console...

So: thanks guys- A place I can finally hang out... until you get sick of me and post me as Idiot of the week!

Caliban

(and when I finally decide to buy that new TotSC disc- I'll buy it over Amazon thru you guys... heheh :p )

Personally, I don't cheat because it blew *MY* fun too. I have been known to change people's portaits and avatars, though (and that's about as far as it goes). In any case, let people play the game however they like (even if they like playing with absolutely no challenge....)

Welcome Caliban!

It's great fun to read Extremist's posts, especially if you leave a window open for irony. ;)

My attitude against cheating is hard but Dan Simpson has helped me alot with his FAQ's so I have only good words for him.

My cheating weakness is CTRL-J. *hangs head in shame* I had to enable the console to spawn somebody in after a bug in one of my games, and ever since, I just can't be bothered to walk down the pointlessly long hallway to Aran Linvail over and over...

It's easy to resist CTRL-Y, in my opinion, because not only is it boring, you also (appropriately) don't get experience for the kills. (-: And it's easy to resist spawning in magic items for myself because I don't know the codes off the top of my head. But that CTRL-J is my itchy trigger finger and I know it!

-Hey thanks for all the greetings-

About CTRL J -
I can see how you can fall into a habit of using that, as the game tends to have you walk a lot, and if you dont have the boots of speed for everyone (which I believe is impossible) you are in for a lot of waiting while your characters plod around Athkatla or the surrounding countryside.

My personal regard for all of the cheat keys is to remain free of them. Somehow even the smallest offense seems to blacken my gaming experiance.

Changing avatars and portraits, even sounds- that only enhances gaming experience if thats what you are into, so I hold no fear of that one...

Good day-

Caliban

Actually Caliban, I think you'll find it ironic that most of the people here will call your "strategizing and brainwork" cheating.

Post a strategy and see... if there's a spell involved it's an 'exploit,' or a cheat, if its anything else its considered 'cheese'

Again - me.

I discovered a few nights ago who that Dan Simpson is. I don't read FAQs nor walkthrus unless I've already finished the game and unless someone points me to see where he or she got some strange ideas about the game.

Common strange ideas from those texts:
1. You'll NEVER finish a romance without SK
2. You'll NEVER finish the game without SK
3. You'll NEVER see what this game can until you press CTRL+Y
4. This game MUST be patched with UNOFFICIAL patch
5. You MUST use happy party "fix"
6. You MUST use romance "fix" that allows concurent romances
7. You MUST use fake talk strategy against anything that moves
8. No legal hero can finish the game, your hero MUST be one not allowed (i.e. dwarven conjurer)
etc etc...

Pal, I simply don't think that any of above is true, and that's where my animosity comes from.

Dan Simpson's FAQs I've never read - do you think I should start? Do I need to get pissed more that I already am?

Anyway, I came here in the first place to talk about RPGs. And I found a player's corners on this site. If those were cheater's corners - I would NEVER waste my time here.
You see, there are many forums on the net. I can always choose where to be.
This definetly is the best site on the net - for now.
But who made it like that?
Definetly not SK users.

I'm sorry if I offended someone with that last sentence. But it hurts me and it hurts badly someone's answering a question with spams like:
"Don't bother with that, use SK or CTRL+Y!"

That could work with me when I was just new to BG2 and thought that we're dealing bugs with it. But now - it looks to me like insulting the person who asks the question. Like he or she doesn't know for cheating.
Like he or she is so dumb because of avoiding cheating.
Tell me that I'm wrong.

I have to say, though, Extremist--is that the fault of the SK util? (Which, disclaimer here: I don't use.) Someone could use it to fix a bug, or they could use the console to cheat like a mad dog. People can also cheat their buns off without any assistance at all, just by exploiting junk like fake-talk.

The thing that really gets me is when people say Oh you can't finish the game without XYZ cheat/util/or even legitimate strategy. This is so obviously false I don't see how anyone could even make such a claim. I finished the game (and the Jaheira romance!) without ANY assistance at all. Other people have finished the game with solo sorcerers and even a solo wizard slayer, so you obviously don't NEED any one particular strategy. When people say you can't beat a game without cheating, they clearly never even tried. :P

Welcome aboard Caliban.

It's too late to move this topic to Whatnots now, so I'll just let it stick here. But remember to post topics that are not directly linked to the game content in the Whatnots forum. We like to keep things tidy around here. ;)

I never download any patches, fixes, updates, or cheats until after i've finished whatever game i'm playing at least once. I know that makes me something of an old fashioned wanker, but to me whatever requires one to download from the internet to manipulate the game one bought, is a form of self flattery. Cheating? Probably in the grand scheme of things, it's not politics so you should be ok. Second time around though, maybe a few mods here and there can't hurt if you've finished the stock game. It's really rather like a car that you want to soup up. You only really know what you could use if you've had a good long look at things over time. Hm. Maybe i should have posted a welcome me message. I've never heard such warm hearted well wishes from the users here in the short time i've been reading. Must be something i've said.

Let's spam a little...I tried all cheats out, but they took all the fun out of the game...so I decided not to cheat any more. it was 6 months ago...and I'm beginning to enjoy this game since then.

Elaboration:
Costner has a way with words. where he preaches the right path (in no religious sense). LINK: http://www.zap2it.com/movies/features/profiles/story/0,1259,-5--7331,00.html
