View Full Version : What is Wisdom good for?

After the whole affair with the Wisdom-Mindsaves business, I was wondering what Wisdom is good for.

The table in the manual states a few things (but we know the manual isn't always right):

<UL TYPE=SQUARE>
<LI>Lore Bonus
<LI>Decreased Spellcasting-failure
<LI>Bonus Spells
<LI>Magic Defense Adjustment
[/list]

Lore Bonus is easy: The more Wis you got, the more/better Lore you will have...

Casting faillure isn't too hard, too: More Wis, better chance of casting the spell (never had problems with that though)

Bonus Spell: High Wis, better Bonus-spell(s). Probably someone needs to add here. Like (IIRC): More slots to memorize spells and higher level spells available in in a greater number.

Mag Def Adj: ? Does this mean I should have better saves vs. Magic (which I don't have...)? Something else maybe?

Am I right when I say that Wis is only good for Thieves and Spellcasters? But then Again: There are some classes that need high Wis that don't cast spells and the ones that it should be nice for(lore for thieves and casting for casters) do not need it. Still got it? :heh: Why should Paladins need High Wis? Or Rangers? Monks?

Please don't come up with PnP-(A)D&D things. I want to know the uses for BG2...
Thanks in Adv.

To be a Paladin, Ranger or Monk you must be wise to represent that these classes are better than the normal fighter class, so you must pay extra. Also it shows that P,R,Mo are meant to be wise and not foolhardy. The mindsave thing to my opinion has absolutely no effect.

The Wisdom determines some of the speech choises and especialy the cunning ones.
Some riddles are solved more easyly if you have more wisdom i think.

Wisdom is good for Paladins and Rangers because when they get higher in level, they get spells too (cleric spells for paladins, and druid spells for rangers). I might add that Wisdom doesn't do much for mages and sorcerers, since their spell-casting ability is mostly based in Intelligence.

Mages and Sorcerer's spellcasting is ONLY based on intelligence. Oh well there is always wish spells...

Master Of Nuhn. I think Ragusa made it quite clear that the mind saves are not added in SoA, in another post. He even made a downloadable guide on wisdom, for the download section of SoA.

What else? Bonus spells. Bonus spells are from 1st to 4th spell level. No more no less.
And only for Priest.

Casting failure? Only for priests.

Mmmh, Only thing I didn't know is that Wisdom decreases casting failure for Priests only. What about the casting failures of Wizards? Based on Int, too?

Wisdom 20+ gives bonus-spells higher then level 4. I never managed to get my Wis-roll higher then 19, though. :D

Still wondering what 'Mag Def Adj' means. Couldn't be saving-throw issue ( http://www.sorcerers.net/ubb/Forum2/HTML/004966.html ), but what is it then? More important: What does it do?

This topic is a few days old, I know, but I was away a few days, too. Sorry for re-opening this (not too-) old topic. ;)
