View Full Version : OOC Roleplay Corner Questions
Crawl Tue, 12th Jun '01, 12:08am I thought it might be better just to open a new topic for questions about the ropleplaying thread as oposed to everying posting in OOC question in the thread.
Anyway, should we post something saying what our character looks like, or a stat sheet or something since we are using characters noone else is really familiar with?
Erran Mon, 18th Jun '01, 8:59am The usual form is to describe your character in your first post. Your class and alignment need not be obvious. Please e-mail your char sheet to erran@dial.pipex.com I would like to try and make this feel as much like NWN as possible.
ayecapitan Tue, 26th Jun '01, 4:17am I wish to participate.
How do ye make a char sheet apart from manual txt creation?
Crawl Tue, 26th Jun '01, 7:08am I had planned to just writting out a character sheet from the 3rd edition PHB and scanning it, then emailing it to Erran. I suppose you could also use the cd in the back of the PHB to create your character and print out the details, but I hacen't tried to print it yet. Incidently, that character generator is awsome. It's not totally acurate for whatever reason, but it's really good for the most part.
ayecapitan Tue, 26th Jun '01, 5:55pm Ah, then the olde hand-typed way, I've no scanner is posession...
The CG is rather good indeed, never had an idea to actually open that CD, but the program is nice; allows to do the paperwork much faster.
Shadow Assassin Sat, 30th Jun '01, 11:39am try this place to make your char then just cut and paste granted its pool of radiance but it uses 3e rules

Erran Sun, 1st Jul '01, 12:59pm You can attach the raw '.cg3' file to your e-mail. My char gen can read that and print it out. Easy - peasy!
Crawl Mon, 2nd Jul '01, 12:16am Hey now that's cool. I didn't even think about that. Better get to crackin' then.
Erran Wed, 4th Jul '01, 12:46pm We are trying to achieve something here that feels like a new game of NWN, within the constraints of the format. Playing with real people and a live DM is different than CRPGs. One important thing is game balance or a level playing field. No 'uber' characters - thats why EVERYONE starts with 32pts and 120gp. Starting equpment should be bought out of this at PHB prices. I am operating an 'honesty' system so I trust eg Knomal will deduct 30gp from his cash for the pin he bought.
Special items (scrolls, potions etc) may be bought at Optyms Blade (see first post) at DMG prices.
Xander, the only equipment you list is xbow and spear, no mention of any scrolls. If you wish to purchase high level scrolls you may be shocked at the price. No-one has inherited any high level stuff from their grandparents etc. If anybody wishes to cast a spell from whatever please announce that, I will tell you if you succeed. Using a scroll above your level can go (very) wrong.
Who lives where (East coast/ west coast/ europe)? I'll try and get a live session going if the action hots up and we can find a time slot that works for everyone.
Lokken Wed, 4th Jul '01, 3:35pm Erran, what's your mail? it's not in your profile.
I'm in europe +1 Greenwich time
Crawl Wed, 4th Jul '01, 8:31pm Currently residing in Louisiana, Central US time. So it's now 1:35 pm where I live.
Erran Wed, 4th Jul '01, 9:57pm Ok, I'm in the UK. My e-mail is erran@sorcerers.net, my ICQ is 111459748. Central US is a trickey one, do you prefer early (I think your 6pm is my midnight) or late (your midnight is my 6am)?
Crawl Thu, 5th Jul '01, 6:23am Wow that is kinda tricky isn't it. Hmmm....well I'm usually home from work by 11:00 in the evening, so late night could work. I'm also home in the afternoon from 2-4 pm almost every day, and I have Sunday evenings and all day Mondays off for now (could change soon to all day Sunday off and having the weeknights off Mon-Thurs). But please note I will be out of town this Sunday and Monday on bussiness.
Ironbeard Thu, 5th Jul '01, 7:05pm Can I change my character sheet, I've decided that an artisan's outfit fits my initial description better than a scholar's outfit. I'm usually online sometime between 6pm and 8pm GMT, although weekends are different, and I go on when I feel like.
Shadow Assassin Fri, 6th Jul '01, 7:24am man this is kinda tricky, I'm in Florida, Eastern Time zone, but I'm not on at any particular time.
Lokken Fri, 6th Jul '01, 3:23pm I have vacation at the moment, so I can go online any time of day. Though from tomorrow and a week forward, I'll be offline, but then I assume I'm available after that :)
ArtEChoke Sun, 15th Jul '01, 8:51am Hahah, ok I admit, I'm confused.
I was trying to find a good time to hop into the game, but I feel that things have gone wrong...
I made an attempt to appear during the morning meeting, and was more or less ignored, which is ok, but then the whole group evidently moved to another location!
I didn't catch this at first - my bad - and I tried another post, which did get replied to (thanks Ironbeard! :)) So I'm trying to figure out:
a.) if its assumed my character followed the whole group along
b.) if Xander is assumed to have followed the whole group along
c.) is the reply I got from Jakob from within the Inn or "the dark stag"
Any help will be appreciated.
Oh, just as a side note.. Ironbeard you referred to Crawl's character 'Xalen' as Crawl, heh, maybe you should edit that.
Ironbeard Sun, 15th Jul '01, 2:03pm Thanks for that. Man, I'm new to ths roleplay business :). I assumed that you'd followed the bulk of the group to the herald's.
ArtEChoke Sun, 15th Jul '01, 6:20pm Ironbeard, I used to play D&D all the time when I was kid (bunch of other rpgs as well) and we used to accidently refer to each other's characters as they're real names all the time. Hahah, it happens alot. I used to DM and do that... :o
hmm, it appears Jakob had a busy night, ok so now we're at the trading coster? the herald's or the Inn? Arg! How do I insert myself into this... (bummer i missed the chat relay.. damn)
Suggestions are welcome! I'm going to read back over alot of it, to get caught up, and assume my boy Pimm has been educated as to what is going on...
Crawl Tue, 24th Jul '01, 4:35am Erran, I know this isn't really relevant right now, and probably won't be for a long while, but...from what sources can we get material for our characters. Are we limited to the classes and feats/spells/skills in the PHB only, or can we uses suppliment material like, oh say, Tome and Blood, Sword and Fist, Forgotten Realms, etc. to uses when picking spells, feats, or perhaps later down the line, prestige classes. Is anything open, or would we have to clear it with you beforehand(like we wouldn't have the time anyway..heh ;)). Just wondering for future reference.
Erran Tue, 24th Jul '01, 3:21pm Let's stick with 3E PHB for the time being, its hard enough for everyone to get up to speed on that. NWN will be 3E only, when I asked the Bioware doods they said: "No prestige classes or regional feats in the initial release of NWN - but we MAY add them in a future suplement." Good enough for me.
ALFA is considering scripting some prestige classes. If anyone gets up to level 5 and has an IC reason we can talk about it again. It will not be a 'gimmie', you will have to find a mentor and train.
Crawl Tue, 24th Jul '01, 11:34pm Sounds good to me. Like I said, it's not like anyone will be getting close to a level where they might get a prstige class anytime soon, but of course since I asked I am interested, and naturally would be willing to undertake whatever was necessary to gain one. However, right now I'm not itching to start incorparating the extra stuff in the suppliments onto my character. But thanks for considering such things; I think they add a lot of individuality to the basic classes.
Relic Wed, 25th Jul '01, 2:23am Erran, I will try to join the RC after all the trial and stuff is done. When I send you my character, how detailed do you want it? Do you want history, etc.?
Erran Wed, 25th Jul '01, 9:33am Relic: No, just send me the .cg3 sheet with how you spent your 32pts and how you spent your 120gp. If you are a spell caster, what spells you have memorised.
Thx.
Crawl Sun, 29th Jul '01, 5:58am Erran, I got a good question for you. Before I start divying up that 100 GP in the morning, I need to know if you want Thomas to get any of the rewards from these quests and adventures. Sorry, but I'm not really familiar with all of this, so I don't know if a DM with a PC needs his PC to get stuff.
Erran Sun, 29th Jul '01, 8:05am As Thomas the NPC's contribution was so minor he will not be offended if you leave him out of the share out.
The stuff given to Knomal was to a) complete the disguise and b) share out. Dont forget the stuff you took from the guard. You can buy and sell at Optym's Blade, across the road. ;)
Ironbeard Tue, 6th Nov '01, 11:31pm A question to Erran: On the open gaming foundation site it states that a sneak attack can be made with a ranged weapon provided the range is no greater than thirty feet. However, I think I remember you or another DM telling a PC that there could be no ranged sneak attacks. Could you please clarify this point for me?
Lokken Tue, 6th Nov '01, 11:36pm it requires that the target is not aware of you are there or attacking. It looses it dex mod to ac as well.
Didn't think you could gain sneak attack bonus though, ah well, didn't pay much to the thief really.
Crawl Thu, 8th Nov '01, 12:31am This is more an out of character comment that question. I would like to remind everyone that the specific roleplay threads, at least the RC ones, are closed threads. That means unless you have permission from the DM or are part of the game, do not post comments or interject yourself into the RC threads. If anyone feels the need to spam, please do it somewhere else. It's ruins the feel of the threads when someone feels the need to interrupt with some mindless comment. I just ask in the future, don't spam in these threads. Thank you.
Ironbeard Thu, 22nd Nov '01, 11:58pm And, uh, one more thing.... The dodge bonus gnomes, dwarves etc. get against giants. Does that mean that they can treat such encounters as if they had the dodge feat, or does it just improve the dodge feat if they have it?
Zorac Fri, 23rd Nov '01, 12:07am Unless someone proves me wrong I would definitely say that you have this bonus regardless of having the feat or not. I can't read the PHB in any other way.
I think the feat has nothing to do with this other than it gives the same type of bonus.
Edit: This seems to be one of the only times where bonuses stack. If you have the feat as well it will actually stack with the racial bonus unlike most other bonuses of the same type.

Crawl Sat, 24th Nov '01, 7:25am I'm going with Zorac here. As best as I can remember, dodge bonuses do stack with one another. Ironbeard, don't tell me you guys are already fighting giants. Heh, if so, better hope they stack:D
The Word Tue, 18th Dec '01, 3:58am A question: If your RC char dies, and is not ressed, do you start a new char from zero xp, or do you roll up a new char with roughly the same xp?
Erran Tue, 18th Dec '01, 11:16am In my world we are using NWN/ALFA rules which say, if you die and aren't ress'ed you roll a new 1st level character. That should encourage more careful play! What happens to the deceased gear is ourely up to the survivors, the 'new' characcter has no claim on it.
A word on ress. You lose one level on res (1st lvl chars lose 1 pointt of con, permanently), so it's not really worth raising chars <3rd lvl.
Crawl Thu, 20th Dec '01, 7:21am So what happens then if a 10th level character dies? Does a first level charcter really belong in that party? Just a thought.
Erran Thu, 20th Dec '01, 10:56am A 10th level char is a prime candidate for resurrection. Chances are they will have enough cash to pay for it by then, so comming back (if the res works) as 9th level is no biggie. It's at lower levels where its a trickier decision.
Carn Fri, 28th Dec '01, 6:10am I've never roleplayed before on the internet (aside from MMORPGs like Ultima Online, etc), or in real life for that matter. =) I was wondering what is the best way to get myself into an online campaign and learn the ropes. Thanks in advanced.
-edit-
Btw, I think I'd like something more like an IRC real time session instead of these messageboard type campaigns. Thanks again. ;)

DragonRider SkyWard Sun, 13th Jan '02, 4:52pm Carn, I'm not sure about every one else but I run at the moment a campain for newbes. As of right now their are no openings but if you would like to get the feal for it you can click on Campiagn of Kilren. I do posts because you think out what your next move is going to be and theirs no pressure in getting online and talking through a messager thing, like the FrendlyArm Inn. Thier are other ways to do it too. So look and read around. I do have one player who has not posted for awile, I might have to replace her. When I do I'll put a message in my campain. Hope you enjoy playing!
