View Full Version : how to get back to the surface
Cancerman Mon, 4th Dec '00, 10:51am After paying a visit to spellhold I had to go to the underwater city and now I have currently enteret the Underdark, and all I want to do is to go back and fight those nasty dragons. Earlier I wasnīt ready for them, but now I feel invincible (well, more or less).
Now I would just like to know whether there is a way to the surface which doesnīt include killing all those drows etc. It would just be so silly if the last thing I did in the game was to get that nice +5 sword for Keldorn.
In Thorms name, somebody tell me what to do

Be patient, you're going to be there for a week or so, you've got a lot of quests to do before you go topside again. You won't have to kill too many drow, more like 'join' them. Upside is - lots more nice items -including a part for the Crom Freyr - which makes Carsomyr look like a toothpick, and you'll probably all go up a level.
You might want to start by talking to the deep gnomes in the northwest corner ...
Sylvus Moonbow Mon, 4th Dec '00, 2:00pm Worry not Cancerman.
The Dragons will be waiting for you once you return, but as mentioned above, you have other issues at hand to take care of.
I myself left for Spellhold without finishing off everything I could.
I didn't do Renal Bloodscalp's quest to look into the other Guild in the Dock District nor did I put together the items needed for that Lich. I didn't kill the Lich in the Bridge District either or kill any dragons.
I had to get out of the city for my own sake or else I would have gotten fed up with BG2 again. Needed a good change of scenary and it surprises me you want to return to the surface so quickly. I'm looking forward to the change.

OK first a word of warning: I have not tried this and I haven't heard of anyone who has, but I don't know why it wouldn't work.
North of where you enter the Underdark and to the west is an exit to the Kuo-Toan dungeon. It's close to the bridge into the Deep Gnome village; not really easy to find. Within that dungeon is an exit to the surface. You should be able to leave the Underdark and only fight a few Drow, Kuo-Toans and Spore Colonies, and still be able to come back and do the whole thing. I have heard of one person who left after talking to Adalon and couldn't complete the egg quest, but if you leave before that, I don't see why all of the quests wouldn't be waiting for your return.
Cancerman Wed, 6th Dec '00, 9:28am So it should be possible to leave the underdark and get back later. I will consider that. But you are right Syl, itīs quite "fun" down here. I would just love to see Keldorn chopping up mind flayers with the equalizer(?)...
Draco Vlasavius Thu, 7th Dec '00, 7:54pm Well I tried it this time (going straight from Saughin City to Underdark to Surface) just to be sure and was unable to get to the Surface. When I had played my last full game I was an Evil Thief/Fighter and was able to leave the Underdark without a problem but I forgot... I had killed Adalon. She actually has the rune scroll that opens the *Exit* door that the Drow have warded. That exit door location is right where she normally teleports you to if you are good and help rescue her eggs.
So if you kill Adalon (those of Nuetral or Evil Alignments) you can get the scroll off of her carcass and go right up to the Surface without doing anything related to Ust Natha (Drow City). Otherwise you have to help Adalon and she'll open the doors upon rescue/reward to her egg quest.
Blackthorne TA Thu, 7th Dec '00, 8:22pm Ahhh! So, you can't get through by just killing the Drow guarding the exit eh? That's too bad; it would have been nicer to be able to pick Imoen up sooner, but if I have to go through the whole egg thing, I might as well finish everything.
You know, a funny thing is that Adalon tells you that you could have found your way out without her doesn't she?
And the post where I got the idea originally (Sir Phapylon's "Oppps... Skip Chapter 5") seemed to indicate that he left without finishing the Adalon egg quest... Very strange...
Also, IronEagle indicated he was able to do it in Sylvus' "Spellhold" thread...

Blackthorne TA Thu, 7th Dec '00, 11:11pm Hey Draco - One other thing I remember now. When I went through the Kuo-Toan dungeon in my Drow disguise, I was able to talk my way past the Drow at the exit.
But as a consequence of going through the exit I lost my disguise, so I reloaded.
So it seems like the Drow guarding the exit have a means of opening it; does one of them perhaps have an item or something that will allow you to open it?
Draco Vlasavius Thu, 7th Dec '00, 11:54pm That's probably it on the head. Because when I approached the Drow Exit this time through Viconia tried to reason with them. She couldn't and stated that they wouldn't listed to reason -then they gave up thier lives by attacking us. So sad. What a waste. It was a quick massacre and a crying shame.
But your 'still under illusion spell' sound's like it is another method to leave the Underdark. Even when the illusion is dispelled I'd be curious to see if Adalon would "re-illusion" your party if you went down and spoke with her again.
But it does indeed sound like there are a few ways -all through Adalon (alive or dead).
I can't STAND that Dragon. I like every Dragon in the game 20 times more than her!!!
