View Full Version : How many ALFAns are here?
Sir Belisarius Fri, 23rd May '03, 3:26pm How many folks here are playing NWN on the ALFA servers?
If you are, please post your character and the server you're playing on. Here's me:
Rem Stoneybrook - Level 2 Halfling Rogue
Server: DaggerDale
Blackthorne TA Fri, 23rd May '03, 5:35pm Rwn Blackthorne L1 (almost 2) Ranger
Daggerdale
Gothmog Fri, 23rd May '03, 5:54pm SirIon Ma'ferr lvl 2 druid on Daggerdale.

Gnolyn Lochbreaker Sat, 24th May '03, 4:17am Gnevin Gandeleshar
Level 2 Gnome - Arabel
Capt. Tripps Sat, 24th May '03, 7:49am Linal- level 1 cleric TVS (dead)
(lost my bard Olivia in a major cluster-f*** the other day, we ended up losing half the party, all former beta-testers)
Now Merry Deepockets Rogue 1 on Daggersdale. I need a few levels before going back to the swamp, it's just too deadly. Although the comradeship there is nice, the atmosphere is definatly gallows humor.

Frostbite Sun, 1st Jun '03, 2:59pm I'm nearly there. (actually getting online)
My Character is Thistler Vion, Female halfling rogue (probably one of a good many halfling rogues)
I might get on today if I get enough time on the PC and I'm not kicked off my my parents *evilscowl*
oh yeah, btw. I chose daggerdale as my starting server.
Erran Mon, 2nd Jun '03, 11:39am Looks like I'm gonna be doing a spot of ADMing over at Baldur's Gate :)
Daggerdale Dudes: Mind how you go at night, there's Drow in them thar hills!
Sir Belisarius Mon, 2nd Jun '03, 12:04pm No kidding. I've been around for a few drow incursions, but I missed last night's action.
It sounds like the newcomers don't know when to turn tail and bolt. A few pc's died last night, and everyone is complaining about that, and the fact that the drow looted the fallen's bodies.
I mean seriously...That's what we do to the monsters we kill...DO you expect them to do any less?
Frostbite Mon, 2nd Jun '03, 12:56pm Yes! I finally got all the files I need onto my PC and should be able to play tonight. :D
I give Thistler about... 3 days before she croaks.
Mathetais Mon, 2nd Jun '03, 5:52pm I'll be on tonight (unless I can't figure it out). Look for a corpse named Anselm lying somewhere in Daggerdale.
Sure I'm an optimist ... that blood pool is half-full! :)
Gnolyn Lochbreaker Mon, 2nd Jun '03, 11:33pm Well, I've moved back to Daggerdale with a new PC for a little while - sorry, you'll just have to guess who I am :p I'll look for you tonight Math...um, do you have a preference for the right or the left side of the ditch?
Last night was definitely odd on DD. Logged on with my brand new PC, and was having nice chat in the Broken Dagger...and suddenly my character was face down in a cave, surrounded by a handful of drow and every one of the 20-odd characters on the server  Seems a relatively new DM hit the wrong key and transported everyone on the server into a pitched battle with some hefty drow :p
Mathetais Tue, 3rd Jun '03, 6:38am Anselm came ... and died. Wandered into a Zhentarim outpost, killed one guard, but didn't flee fast enough before two others brought him down (and his pet boar). As we speak he is at -6 and I'm wondering if he'll recover or if I move on to a new PC.
Gothmog Tue, 3rd Jun '03, 7:33am Leave him.
Before he is -10 you could still heal him and play, but if were alone with the Zhents there isnt anyone to do that... and you cant call anybody as you're seriously hurt and can do nothing but lie there.
And unless you have 1500gp or so you cant get ressurected in the temple.
Dont worry about it. It happens all the time. One day you'll make it to second level where you *probably* wont drop dead by a strayed arrow :p ;)
Sir Belisarius Tue, 3rd Jun '03, 11:49am Math: Welcome to the club...I've lost 6!
Rem has scratched and clawed his way to 4th level.
It's hard to tell how many Gothmog has lost...On the one hand, his bodies' litter the streets of Dagger Falls on a nightly basis, yet they're all named Gothmog..... ;) :p  :spin:
((Just kidding with you, man!))
Mathetais Tue, 3rd Jun '03, 12:34pm LOL ... well, I just started a new character and bought some equipment. I may be on tonight ...
Frostbite Tue, 3rd Jun '03, 12:41pm First taste of ALFA last night :D
Thistler is still alive!!!
Wow!
Shopping in Dagger Falls, bought a shortbow, a couple of arrows and a shortsword, and some studded leather armour.
Then decided to venture down into the sewers. Seemed like someone had been there already though, I still found a stirge and some fire beatles (sp? I can't remember how to spell?)
Things started tougher as soon as she met up with a flock of stirges, 4 of them. Shot down two, and fled back into the next area, with my consitution down by a couple of points.
By now, Thistler decided that she'd had enough of the sewers, and ventured up above ground into the night. In the end I decided to do some contract work for the local Lord, something nice and easy.
SO I ended the day with 120 experience towards leveling up :D
I'm still alive
EDIT - I'm English. So I dunno wether I'd ever be on at the same time as other SPers?
Blackthorne TA Tue, 3rd Jun '03, 3:46pm I wasn't on last night, but to the two newcomers: Don't go doing things on your own as much as possible, especially when you don't know what's out there. It's real easy to lose a character.
The sewers aren't too bad to wander alone as you noticed, but I've found a couple of corpses down there, so it certainly isn't safe.
Usually there are people gathered around the campfires oustide the River Gate. If you want a little help with a contract you have, you might be able to get some help there.
I've been pretty cautious and still have lost 3 characters, and the last two were killed while adventuring with pretty powerful friends; just plain bad luck.
Mathetais Tue, 3rd Jun '03, 4:47pm BTA ... good points. Last night I kinda wrote my character off. I needed to learn how to play online and didn't want to disturb anyone else by asking all my n00b questions.
I learned alot ... #1 being that combat is much different when you can't pause. I died after killing one Shazamite (can't remember the real name), then saw two others ... and was trying to pause to summon a monster when the bolts found their home in me.
Ce Cera!
Frostbite Tue, 3rd Jun '03, 9:24pm I went on the Daggerdale again earlier, *was kicked off by father* *evil scowl*
It was great though, there was a group of five of us, myself, a fellow Halfling rogue, A dwarven fighter, a bard (I think) and another ranged attacker, ranger maybe.
Four of us with bows and crossbows, the figher with a warhammer.
We headed out Orc hunting, it was really enjoyable, most of the orcs we came across, we managed to drop before our drarven friend even got close.
We went of in search of some pesky goblins, instead only found a small gang of kobolds. Then I was kicked off.
It was great though, and I now begin to see the appeal of going out with groups of friends and roleplaying your way through the coutry side.
I don't think that any of you guys have been on at the same time as me though, I'm ... how to write this so everyone can understand...
I'm roughly 1 hour behind GMT. MY character is Thistler Vion, and she can normally be found strolling/ getting lost around Dagger Falls.
Register Tue, 3rd Jun '03, 11:03pm some fire beatles LOL!! Fire beatles?? I can imagine John Lennon attacking you in the sewers before he got murdered by a sniper. :)
Teufelchen Tue, 3rd Jun '03, 11:16pm I signed up a couple days ago but I haven't heard back yet. Anybody have any idea about how long it takes to get a response?
Sir Belisarius Wed, 4th Jun '03, 1:27am Usually 3-5 business days. (Just about a week; and you'll hear either way)
Teufelchen Wed, 4th Jun '03, 2:16am Thanks Bel. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Sir Belisarius Wed, 4th Jun '03, 3:02am No problem. Good luck! Don't be discouraged if you don't get in the first time...It took me a couple attempts before I got in.
I think BTA had to rewrite his bio 18 times before they accepted him! That's just a rumor though... ;) :spin:
Gothmog Wed, 4th Jun '03, 1:06pm Heheheee...
It seems i am the most reckless guy on SP.
I counted my character so far and this is 10th. The thing is i've lost all of them in a week's time
This time i actually expect to survive... I'm level 2 druid and have 20HP. That, i belive is enough not to die in one hit.... At least i hope so. And i have another name than Gothmog ;)
Last night was awsome... I didnt get even 1xp but it didnt matter much. I was wandering around asking if anyone knew the way to the White Chalk Hollow and came across a woman who finaly knew that. But it was already late and she said she doesnt want to venture in the dark. So she invited me someplace (secret you know ;) wouldnt want that place too crowded :p ) with a big pool. We took a bath and it was really hot steamy and such in there... We stayed there all night. I think you can imagine what happened. Suffice to say i was very pleased i havent gone to White Chalk Hollow or anyplace else that time  .
I'm trying to stay alive now
Subra Wed, 4th Jun '03, 2:54pm Noticing that Daggerdale is a very crowded server. I'm wondering if this is a good thing or a bad thing for someone just beginning....wouldn't a less crowded server have greater opportunities? Perhaps the greater population makes it easier to find a group, but I'm unsure. What are your thoughts?
Sir Belisarius Wed, 4th Jun '03, 3:06pm I like it there...There are a lot of people, but that means there's plenty of opportunities to roleplay!
The other plus: Going anywhere alone is almost certain death for a new player. Meet people. join a group!
Blackthorne TA Wed, 4th Jun '03, 3:20pm 18? I lost count after 10 ;)
Yeah, it's so much better to have a crowded server IMO. When I was on Scardale I wandered around for hours without seeing a soul, and when I finally ran across a real PC, he killed me. Dagger Falls is a blast with all the different people you run across. You can just sit at a campfire outside the River Gate and meet all kinds of people.
Mathetais Wed, 4th Jun '03, 5:24pm True ... see my posts in teh "Taste of ALFA" for the plots going on. Daggerdale has been fun.
Gnolyn Lochbreaker Wed, 4th Jun '03, 11:02pm While it's nice to log on and be guaranteed to be able to get with a party, it would be a good idea to spread some of the players out a bit more though. Last night a group of 5 of us ventured out on a short static quest on DD. Unfortunatley, the quest had recently been completed by another group (or a solo PC, it's an easy quest) and we had to wait ~20 minutes real-time for the bad-guy to respawn. So I highly recommend trying other servers. I'll be moving on (again) to another server soon, probably Arabel once it stablizes. With luck I'll be taking a few other PCs with me ;)
(aside)
Reason #101 for playing a female character:
You'll never run out of healing potions. Male PCs, even the brutes, can be hugely generous ;)
Blackthorne TA Wed, 4th Jun '03, 11:16pm That must be a recent change. Once I went there with Merry, and we killed the guy in a lucky one shot. As we were collecting the loot, another quester arrived, respawing the bandit right back on top of us, and then didn't help us kill him! At least we got two sets of armor and weapons out of it :)
But IMO, those static quests run dry pretty quick, and there's still plenty of fun and RP on DD due to all the people around.
Gnolyn Lochbreaker Wed, 4th Jun '03, 11:49pm I agree about the quests. I usually use them just to kill some time, but it kind of grew a little last night.
The way the quests on DD are set-up (as on TVS) is that each party member has to be on the same 'chapter'. So, with the villian in black quest everyone has to 1) have received the quest and 2) spoken with the arcane sgt. You're supposed to be able to do those separately; as long as you're on the same 'chapter' when you complete it, it should work fine. I took the time to make sure Math's character was set-up and at the same point as mine - I'm hoping it worked. Tested those quests *a lot*.
Erran Thu, 5th Jun '03, 11:30am Arabel has some Fed-exing quests that can be soloed if you are in a 'difficult' time zone, however both Arabel city and Arabel countryside servers have to be up.
Alfa really comes to life when you join up with othr players. Of course you don't know their alignment and motives so roleplaying the getting to know you phase and staying IC is vital.
Mesmero Thu, 5th Jun '03, 1:13pm I submitted my application today, so I'll keep my fingers crossed for the next few days.
If I get accepted in, there will be a human cleric of Helm, named Beofar Hornstar, desperately looking for his kidnapped, adopted drow daughter, in... Daggerdale. (I know, not very original)
This is actually the first non-halfling character I'm playing in a rpg in a long time. But I guess I can always play a halfling again, when Beofar dies. When I made this character and the story up, I actually named him Beofār, but I couldn't submit the application with an 'ā' on the form. Now the name looks kinda lame.
One final question; if you're character dies, do you have to start playing on the same server, with your new character, or can you continue on a server on the other side of Faerūn?
Mathetais Thu, 5th Jun '03, 3:19pm Silverblade ... good luck to you. Its been a blast.
I have a feeling Gnolyn's bandit quest wouldn't have been so long if he hadn't been nice to n00b's like me ... and that Brillian idiot!
After death, you can go anywhere. New life, new place, new history.
Gnolyn Lochbreaker Thu, 5th Jun '03, 10:20pm Well, I usually try to be nice to noob's :) Serioulsy, I always find it's useful for a new, or relatively new player to be 'brought' into ALFA game-play, rather than to have to stumble around and hope something happens to them. Seems that this does happen a fair amount, especially shortly after Live. So I usually try to give 'em a helping hand, or a not-so gentle shove in some cases ;) Not sure what the story was with that other player though - could have been a language problem, but after Kataney spent 5 mins shouting the same phrase at her, "Vot. Ess. You. Name.", well you have to wonder.
