Sir Belisarius
Mon, 8th Sep '03, 5:40pm
How many SP folks have made it into ALFA and are playing regularly? So far I've seen:

Gothmog
Frostbite
Mr Writer
Mathetais
Mesmero/Silverblade
BTA

Anyone else?

Gothmog•
Mon, 8th Sep '03, 7:11pm
Yeah, i've been wondering the same thing myself as well.

hmm... Gnolyn Lochbreaker. Its just that he plays on other servers than DD it seems.

Dungeon_master just got accepted... I cant say he's a regular though. At least i havent seen him up yet.

Capt. Tripps ?

None else i recall right now.

Tripps played for a while but went the way of all the other non-lame players ( ;) ): Became a DM.

I am attempting to become a member, but I doubt I will succeed this time because of a hastily planned character.

I keep getting rejected :(

Gnolyn Lochbreaker
Mon, 8th Sep '03, 11:35pm
Yep, I'm still around. Mostly Arabel and TVS though. Sprite is a member, but since I've hi-jacked her computer she hasn't played in quite some time. When I can eventually replace my own computer we'll probably be on at the same times.

Some others are Vormaerin (longtime DM on TVS) and Idoru (DM on Arabel). Also Relic and Zorac, but I don't know if they play regularly. Oh, and Arwen (HDM for Yartar). And of course Erran.

:)I try and come on as often as I can, which is usually most evenings and weekends :)

I met up with MR Writers character, who was causing quite a stir outside River Gate.

Mathetais

Fade, they don't take the character part into consideration as much as the description of a good role player, expectations, ect.

Gopher, keep trying! Very few get in on the first time. :)

I'm here too! I haven't played much those time, but if ye ever find A ˝-elf druid named Kenneth he his me... So far I manage to buy a staff...woo-hoo! However I wonder which server you play on it? I'd like to play with other SP-er... yeah!

2 post to go before my 500th post!

Most of the SPers are on the Daggerdale Server ALFA 032. I am DMing that server as well.

Rotku
Fri, 12th Sep '03, 9:36am
Rotku plays on DaggerDale as well!

Frostbite
Fri, 12th Sep '03, 12:47pm
The Daggerdale server caters for all! Its got great static quests, and DM involovment for everyone.

Current DM run areas

Azure Blades - Good lawful chaps
Red Dragon Corps - Mad evil lawful chaps
Fellowship - Good for rangers and druids

Up and coming Mages guild thing, which I intend to join.

:)
I like Daggerdale, I went on TVS for a while, but I didn't find it as much fun as DD, its nice to be able to go on and talk to people.

I'm accepted but haven't got on game yet - Work keeps getting in the way. I have finally picked up a copy of SoU so with a little luck I'll get on line soon.

Though I'm only going to be able to make it Sunday afternoons and evenings...unfortunately I have a life outside my computer which keeps getting in the way

Rotku

Life outside computer
How can that be true?!
Well anyhow, welcolm to ALFA... sort of.

fyernine
Fri, 19th Sep '03, 1:03pm
I know. It's annoying but true. Would that I could find a way to be intranvenously conected 24 hours.

To be honest - it's a sort of personal erstriction. If I don't control the fix I'll never get offline and the consequences of that are just too horrible to imagine.

Anyway, my first character is going to be a half orc monk, so if you see a big blue skinned wise one wearing no clothes, then it'll be me. . . hoping I don't die tooo quick.

Mesmero
Fri, 19th Sep '03, 6:54pm
NO! Not a blue skin! What is up with people giving their character a blue skin. Orcs are not blue.

Sorry, I'm a bit frustrating with blue skinned characters. I saw two blue gnomes the other day, and as far as I know, gnomes are not blue. I also saw another blue half-orc a while ago. Keep it a bit realistic, give your character the skin color which actually fits them, and if you want an extreme color, do not use blue, it doesn't make you any more special, for it has been done over, and over, and over again.

Rotku
Fri, 19th Sep '03, 7:19pm
Well the elf in the little peice of writing under your name is blue.

How'd an old elf get ... blues :p

I'm in, but I never play.

I used to post on the forums, but I've given up that as well.

And as always time's to blame. School and RL just take up too much of that.

Rotku

Once again...

Life outside computer
How can that be true?!

I think that says it all.
You should really make time to come on, it's great fun.
...The only problem is that when you are on the wrong side of the world (like Rotku) no one's ever on when you are, so it's sort of boring.

Vormaerin
Sun, 21st Sep '03, 11:02am
Well, I'm on a small Island in the mid Pacific. Not sure when you actually play, but I seem to overlap fairly often with a goodly number of Aussies and Kiwis. I DM regularly from around 6pm to 10pm in the GMT-10 timezone. That's mid afternoon for folks on the other side of the date line. I am on later once or twice a week (usually my Tues/Wed).

Downside is that I DM on TVS, while most folks here play on DD. But if you don't play with them anyway, join the party on in the Swamp. Its fun, just ask Gnolyn.

Gnolyn Lochbreaker
Sun, 21st Sep '03, 7:30pm
I think everyone should give the Swamp a try. It's definitely worth your while. And not nearly as lethal as many people think...at least, once you get used to it ;)

Seriously, if you're having trouble finding people to play with, including DMs, you should consider moving to another server. ALFA is no fun alone. Take a look at some of the other server threads (on the ALFA forums) to get an idea of when players and DMs are most likely going to be on. And then stick around for a while and see how it goes. A lot of ALFAns tend to create a character, logon, and if nothing happens after the first hour, log off and go back to their old server. I've yet to be disappointed on any server, although the Vast Swamp is more to my tastes.

Rotku
Mon, 22nd Sep '03, 8:09am
At this very moment for example, there are only two servers with anyone on. These are Daggerdale (4 players) and a Vast swamp (3 players). But both which are so big areas it's usually very hard to find any one.
So changing servers won't work.

Vormaerin
Mon, 22nd Sep '03, 11:38am
That's rather misleading. TVS is a very large server, but it only has six 'urban' areas spread over 4 townships. Pretty much everyone operates out of Thunderstone, which is a two zone town with only 1 Inn. Sure, if folks are already out of town, you aren't going to meet up with them. But that's true of any server.

But on TVS, you know that eventually they are going to end up at the Dragon Arms Inn or the commons outside of it. If you had logged onto TVS, you would have started right next to those three people. If portaled over from DD with your existing character, you'd have a long walk along the road and then have ended up right next to where everyone gathers.

Rotku
Tue, 23rd Sep '03, 2:22am
Portaled? Yeah right!
Considering I can't even keep a character alive for a day, how do you expect me to raise enough money to do that

Mr Writer
Tue, 23rd Sep '03, 7:37am
Its hard but you'll get it sorted, I should reach lvl 2 tonight if im lucky (please dont get any ideas about lvl20 zhent mages or uber undead bel :p ) for the first time as well which would be nice.

Also a general question, I kow if druid wear metal armour they lose their powers for 24 hours (ie basically they cant but for some reason they can wear chain in NWN not allowed in ALFA of course) but what about the Ant Chainmail... It says in the description that its made purely from Ant exoskeletons (the fact that he doesnt charge you for it makes this look more likley...

Gothmog•
Tue, 23rd Sep '03, 9:21am
hmm, yeah actualy druids are allowed to wear any armor (if they have proficency) as long as its made from natural materials.

It should be allowed.
:)

Vormaerin
Tue, 23rd Sep '03, 11:46am
Whether or not an exotic material armor meets the druidic requirements is up to the HDM whose server is responsible for the items. That would be Memneth in this case. The last word that I heard was the ant armor is not wearable by druids. However, that's second hand (a druid player saying that's what the DM told him). Your best bet would be to contact a DD DM directly and ask.

Oh, using most portals between servers does not cost anything unless they are ship travel. I know its free to leave TVS for Daggerdale. I haven't heard that it costs to come the other way.

Some others are Vormaerin (longtime DM on TVS) and Idoru (DM on Arabel). And I thought I was completely forgotten here. :)

Anyway, if you're european, make sure you visit Arabel.. I'm GMT+1, and I log a lot of hours per day, so does another of our DMs (Icarus/slice).

Mathetais
Wed, 24th Sep '03, 9:12pm
Vormaerin and Idoru, can I be honest with you here (away from the ALFA boards where I'd get flamed for this)?

I'm scared as heck to visit the Swamp or Arabel. I currently have a 5th level druid who is role playing a ton, hunting a bit, and hoping to get a job in the Ironstar hall as Animal Master.

I'm honestly a bit bored with the Daggerdale countryside, but don't know a thing about the Swamp or Arabel. When I was completely ignorant of DD, I died a TON!

I've tried to start PC's on other servers (Baldur's Gate, Anauroch & N. Cormyr) but never ran into other players and got lost (on N.C.) or killed (BG & the 'Roch) quicker than you could believe.

My playing schedule is kinda sporadic (RL is a mess) so I can't be confident that I wouldn't have to log off in the middle of the wilderness while walking to Thunderstone ... PLUS all the other dangers.

Any advice for a chicken like me? I know its about RP, not levels or survivial ... but I like life!

---
On the Druid Armor thing, you *can* wear anything, but techinally you can't use your druid powers for 24 hours after wearing metal armor. So as Cromasis is getting more melee orientated, I'm planning on buying a set of breastplate or other stronger armor (than the studded leather currently used) and donning it when I know I'll be entering a situation that is combat intensive. (ie White Chalk is under seige, the orcs are at the gates and plenty of other healers are out and about) You have to RP this restriction, but we're all trust worth, ain't we? ;)

Frostbite
Wed, 24th Sep '03, 9:35pm
Bel likes undead, didn't you know that!
I like TVS, I didn't do well on it, but the scenery is awesome!

At the moment, I have important things going on in DD... Mr Writer and myself talk to each other all the time which is fun, talking about one anothers chars.

Today I found not one... but TWO DIRE BEARS! I need to keep an eye on that...

Vormaerin
Thu, 25th Sep '03, 7:11am
There is a lot of player traffic between Daggerdale and TVS, so it should be possible to find someone to travel with. The other way to go is see if we can arrange a time in common to play, in which case I can provide some NPC assistance (advice and information, etc).

Frostbite
Thu, 25th Sep '03, 10:43am
I'm thinking about taking my level2 cleric/ranger around the servers. Perhaps I'll hang about in TVS for a while when I do :) .

I want to join Falling-Leafs rogue elven faction, sounds fun, What sort of Dm interaction do you give on TVS? I usually get off to early to get involved in any DD DM quests, unless Sir Bel decides to spawn undead on me.

I'm GMT+1 btw.

Vormaerin
Thu, 25th Sep '03, 2:30pm
Well, I am GMT-10 and am usually on from 6pm to 10pm in that time slot, so that would be early morning for you.

We do have a Polish ADM, who likely would better match up with your gaming times. He has been kept off the server recently because 1.31 was never released for the polish edition of the game. However, he should be back around when the 1.32 patch goes in.

Frostbite
Fri, 26th Sep '03, 1:22pm

This goes back to Mesmero and his blue skin hang up. Do you play uptight cleric types a lot ?

You're playing a FANTASY game dude!!!!?????? FANTASY...which means that you can use your fantasy and fantasise about possibilities. Jeez Louise . . .did you really say, keep it realistic????????

So, someone named Gary Gygax wrote a couple of books which got syndicated into an encyclopedia - and maybe somewhere in the vast waste of paper that most of those tomes are there's a small line saying that orcs happen to have a certain skin colour - but . . . .who the **** cares?

Use your imagination, the books weren't written to become doctrinal religious documents, never to be questioned.

That is part of the fun of playing the game - well, to me at least. I shall continue to play pink, blue, green and spotted orcs whenever I get the chance and if you don't like it when you meet me in game, take out your sword and put to death this heretical aberration of Faerunian fauna!

Why fight with 20 other players for DM time, come to BG if you start another char where its often 3:1 or some such Player - DM ratio :D

Rotku
Thu, 9th Oct '03, 9:09am
Because then I'm probably even more likely to get killed than I am at the moment.
I haven't had a character alive for very much more than a day at the moment.

Shameless self-promotion Danubus ... but I like it!

IWD is a great server (I was there on open vault night).

Vormaerin

Fri, 17th Oct '03, 8:06pm
umm, we are a Live server. How would we run a an 'open vault' night? Just tell all the Live players "oh, sorry, no play tonight for you!"? North Cormeir was able to do it during the last vault update.

Just a brainstorm ... if I was serious I'd have posted it on the ALFA forum ;) Here I can just be myself and make stupid suggestions.

One idea would be to have a monthly or quarterly open vault night. That way people could goof off, get revenge on those monsters that had been squishing them in "real ALFA". Just a stupid idea. *shrug*

Rotku
Fri, 17th Oct '03, 10:46pm
What's an open vault night?

idoru
Sat, 18th Oct '03, 11:21pm
Well, what we did on NC was that we opened up the servers while the character vault was down... you had to log on with a new char, we put a few XP levers in the starting area.. and let people go crazy. I logged on as a player for once, and spent all night receiving payback from my regular players... :(

But mind, the char vault going down for a long time like that is extremely rare. It has only happened that one time since I joined alfa (march or april, can't quite recall).

Either way, doing this had a downside.. Certain players received their free xp (I think it was up to level 9), and ran away to high level areas to kill everything.. thus spoiling a few surprises for their low-level live chars.

Vormaerin
Sun, 19th Oct '03, 6:04pm
yup. there are plenty of areas on TVS that no one has been to yet. I don't need to see any throwaway high levelers smashing through the Dungeon of Weeping Sorrow or the Fire Ant nest. I'd rather the first person ot set foot in there be a real character who has actually earned it.

Gnolyn Lochbreaker
Mon, 20th Oct '03, 5:09am
The Dungeon of Weeping Sorrow...uhhh...that sounds disturbingly prophetic

Math, the Beta servers are essentially 'open vaults' all the time. For example, you can log onto Loudwater with a local vault character, pre-made to a suitably high level in order to test a large amount of content in a short period of time (I have a L10 rogue/wizard on Loudwater). Servers that are in Beta 2 and 3 don't allow you to bring in your own pre-leveled PCs, but there is often an auto leveler available to grant a few levels. And you can also just ask a DM if there's any higher level content that needs to be tested on their server. Just be careful what you ask for ;) I was doing some testing on Selgaunt the other night when the HDM logged on and asked for some help. I said "Sure, no problem." He says "Great! I need help testing resurrections at the temple." I can safely say that resurrection script was working properly :p

Just a thought. Kinda irrelvant now. I'm taking a vaction from ALFA ... been trying to for a month now but the hook had been too firmly set in my jaw. Pulling it out was more painful than I anticipated.

More on this later though (like you care :p ) ;)
