View Full Version : Backstabbing and boots of speed

Does anyone else have this problem?

Assassin w/o boots: Gets 2-3 swipes before he comes completely out of shadows. This is a good thing, because he's a thief and not a fighter, with a sorry thac0.

Assassin w/ boots: *At best* one swipe before he comes out of shadows. We went from the drow temple to the exit of Ust Natha...assassin tried to backstab everyone he saw, and did not once, *not once*, succeed.

Problem with the boots, or is it just me?

When you say "two or three good swipes" do you mean that they all have the backstab multiplier applied? I have never had this happen. Only the first hit counts as a backstab.
I got the boots of speed many days ago (game time) and have been gleefully backstabbing my way along. Including Ust Natha (but not after leaving the temple the final time, we just waded in).
Try taking the boots off and seeing if you can backstab in that situation.

BTW, what are your stats (hide in shadows, move silently)?

If you are hasted it sometimes takes a while for the computer to realise you've actually hit the guy so it can sometimes count as more than one backstab.

The boots of speed (and most hasting items) sometimes get you noticed more, how can you hide if you are moving twice as fast as everyone else?

I think that is a known bug. Somehow boots of speed makes it impossible to backstab. If you dont have the latest patch get it.

The patch won't help you.
Original boots of speed don't let you backstab (which is not normal and is really a bug).
Use search option on the problem, and if that doesn't help I advise you to browse through SP pages on SoA - you might find something that could take care of that thingie. But, I've said enough...

2-3 swipes means 2-3 misses before he comes out of shadows. Not 2-3 backstabs. (No one could survive 2-3 of my assassin's backstabs. I think we maxed out on a critical with 212 pts of damage.)

Thanks, all...I'll hunt around to see if I can find something to fix it... (links, anyone?)

I have no trouble backstabbing with the boots of speed. However, I have TOB installed, so they must have fixed it.

With only SoA and the official patch installed, and had no trouble getting Valygar or my thief PC to backstab while wearing boots of speed.

Before you post again about that it is not bugged (and it is bugged for my F/M/T), check your override folder and tell me which file inside that folder has a name something like:
BOOTxx.ITM

I need to know the numbers (xx) and I need to know the date when that file was created.

If you manage to backstab while wearing Boots of Speed with clean SoA installation and only official patch applied (which I never managed to do), then I want that official patch too!

I was having trouble backstabbing with the boots of speed also, but I downloaded a patch from Baldurdash that fixed the problem. I think they said that they altered the boots of speed so that they didn't give you haste, they just gave you increased movement. The haste on a character only getting one attack per round could cause them to come out of hiding before they could get a hit (not sure why). My assassin has the fixed boots of speed and can backstab quite nicely (192 on a Greater Wolfwere).

The fix on Boots of Speed is included in SPfixpack too. There is no need to visit Baldurdash just for that one, right? :p

Oh, that reminds me, has Baldurdash fixed the Assassin's +1 to hit absence bug? I don't have time to check it out and I must compare parts of new version of SPfixpack with Baldurdash's one... :(
