Thanks Faragon Sat, 28th Sep '02, 5:22pm First of all, take out the wardrums. (I'm not sure if they're in the caves as well, but just in case) Recon with a ranger or thief, and if possible take the drums out without getting spotted. Having Worgriders dumped between your spellcasters is a bad idea. Take out the badass critters first. Orcish Archers are annoying, but not as lethal as a Shaman. If you have a cleric, set all it's capacity to memorising summoning spells. Fodder will take a lot of damage for you when positioned properly. (in front of your rangedattackers, while your tanks attack the flanks, and your rangedattackers fire away) Be sure to attack first with the fodder, so they'll be targeted. Their main purpose is being meatshield. If a character is desperate for healing, shift click on one of your cleric's summonspells. This will cause it to turn into a healing spell. Rest in between battles to replenish life and spells. Don't be carefull with potions. Drink when needed. That's my 2 cents for now :) [ September 28, 2002, 17:23: Message edited by: Faragon ] Gnolyn Lochbreaker Sat, 28th Sep '02, 6:00pm I'm not sure where in the caves you're having a problem, but you should find some useful tips in SP's online walkthrough (http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/IWD2/Walkthrough/chapter1/area4.htm), such as what to expect around the next corner. I suspect it's the three large groups in the first level of the caves that you're having a problem with. If you try to fight them in the large caverns you're almost certain to fail - there's just way too many of them. Use the narrow tunnels to your advantage. Before hand, have your spell casters prepare area affect spells such as sleep, web, entangle, hold, and fireball (depending on your level). And gear the bulk of your party up with distance weapons (slings, bows, crossbows, darts, etc). Leave most of your party further back in the narrow tunnel. Take a rogue or someone else with good stealth skills, sneak down into the cavern where the bad guys are. At the same time, get a web or entangle spell ready so that you can stop them from advancing too close to the rest of your party. With the hidden character, get your enemies attention by shooting them with a bow, or other distance weapon, and then run back to the rest of your party - at about the same time unleash the web or entangle spell (you'll have to time it right so that your sneaking character doesn't get caught in the spell on their way back). As the enemies start coming up the tunnel begin pelting them with the distance weapons as well as other area spells (sleep, hold, etc) - if you have fireball already this is the perfect place for it! Most goblins, orcs and orogs aren't that tough so don't worry too much about them - focus your attention on the named enemies and on their spellcasters (sorcerers, witch doctors and shamen). The spellcasters are the ones that are most likely to kill you as they have some pretty potent offensive spells. As some of them start to approach your party, place one or two good melee fighters in front of the rest of your party - they'll intercept the ones that get close enough. Everyone else should be still firing away with distance weapons - you may also want to station a good healer directly behind your melee fighters to heal them as they need it. The trick is to keep your own party from moving into the web/entangle trap, as well as to keep them from running down into the open cavern. Keep everyone in the tunnels above where they won't get surrounded. Eventually you will be able to slowly and cautiously make your way down into the cavern to pick off the stragglers. Just be careful as you do this because there could still be a shamen or sorcerer down there. Hope this helps! Fighting your way through the first part of the caves is really tough, but a good strategy will keep you alive. For each fight, there are several possible strategies. Spend a few moments scouting out the area first to figure out what the biggest danger is and how you can overcome it. Good luck :) |
