What level must have my cavalier (curently 12) to master two handed sword? When I gain a level, I couldn't use the proficiency slot on that (I have three * on 2h Sw), so I choose single weapon style.

Only pure fighters can gain 3 or more slots of mastery!

Paladins, rangers and multi-class characters can gain only two.

You say that my cavalier cannot grandmaster tho handed sword? But why? It's too heavy for them? This is not fair ...

I guess paladins are too busy communing with their god to be able to devote the serious effort needed to be REALLY good with their swords; similarly rangers are off picking flowers when they should be training. It's a bit strange that MC fighters can't go above level 2 in weapon proficiencies, as here you could be expected to spend half your time doing "proper" fighter training (and go up levels half as fast as a pure fighter).
AFAIK there's no level requirement for when you can get to a particular skill level, it just depends on how you allocate the original picks and the extra proficiencies gained when going up levels.

It is just an in game restriction that prevents paladins and rangers to become too powerful. You know that they can cast priest spells too and that's destined to compensate their lack of weapon skill.

Paladins have some great advantages normal fighters have not:

-they receive a +2 bonus on all saving throws compard to a pure fighter.
-they can cast spells
-they have great innate abilities like protection from evil, lay on hands or detect evil
-especially the kits have some marvellous special abilities like immunity to level drain & hold (undead hunter), immunity to fear & poison + great remove fear (cavalier, my fav) or immunity to hold & charm + great dispell magic (Inquisitor).
-they IMHO get the best class specific quests in BG-2 ;)

Would you now add grandmastery to the list pallys would be too strong and possibly unballance the game.

So their restriction to ** weapon profieciency isnīt that much a disadvantage. The additional *** the paladin canīt get to achieve grandmastery would just add +1 to THACO nad damage and -1 to speed factor. Thatīs it.
So donīt worry, grandmastery is just a question of status, nontheless the paladin is, just like the ranger, an excellent fighter even with **.

As a paladin I am, I must accept my fate: I'll never be the best with my loved two handed sword. After a life of humility and " do what is right", this is the price I pay ... for not reading carefuly kits' description.
That's it, when I'll play the game again, I will choose the dark side.

Cheer up, as a paladin you get to use the best 2h sword in the game, while the straight fighters can't, much better than a mere grandmastery. Mastery and Grandmastery are things that were put in to give something to high level straight class fighters to make up for all the spell abilities and the like they were missing out on.

Yeah! Grand mastery gives you only +1 to hit, +2 to damage, -1 to speed factor and +1 attacks/round which doesn't work in BG2. So cheer up! You don't miss anything important!

The +1 attack/round does work in BG2 after you install the bug fixes from here: http://members.home.net/mrkevvy/fixes.html

Is that bug fix or cheat fix?

[Edit]
For me there is only one answer, and that's the secon one from the mage below. :p

Bug or cheat, that's the question. There are two answers ;

1. If u want to play by AD&D core rules, then it is a bugfix.

2. If u want to play like an ordinary guy that doesn't care, 'cause it's the same 4 all players, then it might be considered as a cheat.

Well the fixes there are generally researched with the development staff and classified as either bug fixes or changes. Not matching the description is generally a bug. I downloaded all the bug fixes, and got the benefits, like a working Azuresedge with the drawbacks, like no multiple strongholds, and no pickpocketing Mordenkainen's Sword.

I don't play with others, so my actions don't affect them, and I generally like stuff to work.
