View Full Version : The "I Hate NWN" Faction for IWD2

Okay, I know that there are some of us who for our own reasons are *NOT* playing NWN.

Who will join me!?!

Let us band together, let us shun the NWN forum, let us tell ourselves that even though our computers are too slow to run NWN that we are still better people. :spin: :hahaerr::heh: :good:

Yes! I shall join this noble cause! I can see through all the cool effects, toolsets, modules, massive multiplayerness, and 10/10 reviews! I know what's what!

Hey Mathetais - I will play IWD-2 even though I can play NWN and enjoy it - for one simple reason: There can be no doubt about that, per design, IWD-2 will be the better single-player game ;)

So instead of "the One Game" We have the "Twin Games" to rule them all? :p:p;):)

I think it should be:

one D&D to rule them all, lets face it, the BG saga, IWD/2, NWn, are all great games! I personally may not be able to get IWD2 due to me annoying my mother over NWN but I shall persivere! one small step for me, one big step for amazon.co.uk!

Ummm... forgive me if I'm wrong Mat, my dear fiery cleric, but... don't you have NWN and aren't you playing on the ALFA server? :p

Aaah what the heck... sign me up!

Yeah....yet another Infinity engine game where you go around in yet MORE snow killing yet MORE of the same goblins. I now simply find the BG and IWD games plain boring compared to the beutiful NWN! And it's story kicks ass :p ;)

Actually, I was one of that small 4% number of people that in the weekly poll chose "I will buy IWD2 and will not buy IWD2".

And I will even try to apply ;) to become the online solution writer for IWD2 on SP....

I see no reason that you can't like both games. I enjoy NWN mostly for the module building and I'll enjoy IWD2 for it's action. These are two different things and are not at odds with each other. Why much I hate NWN to like IWD2? As said above they are all D&D so I see no conflict between them.

Yeah, I'm not a NWN hater. It's just that IwD1 grabbed me by the balls, and I'm not sure IwD2 is going to let me have them back.
*sigh*
Unless, of course, Jermey Soule's replacement completely blows it...

Besides, I haven't the slightest idea what the story behind NWN is anyways. All I really know is that it's 3d, and uses 3rd edition.

Well, I personally have a reason to hate NWN at the moment, It requires a monster of a PC and I dotn have one.

Besides, IWDII will have about the same system specs as BGII had.

P.S.
I dont care for 3D in computer games, it just looks even more fake to me

I'm with you good Mathetais! I have the same problem...except that I looked at the game specs before buying it, and thus know that my BLASTED computer won't run it. So, yeah! Down with NWN and up with IWD2!

I'm in!

Anything resembling BG2 is for me. :)
Sure, I have NWN and I haven't made it any further than mid-chapter 1 so I can't make a definitive judgement on NWN yet.

All the rave reviews of NWN are a pile of BS! Really, I think they are.
Check out the graphics: all the characters look like they are cut from a piece of wood and the woodcutter never got around to polishing the edges. They look like they were made with Poser 2 or something. :o
Another thing is that NWN is slow as molasses. Is it necessary to get a $300 graphics card to make it run smooth?
I long for IWD2!

 I'm in! I do have the 'monster comp' to play NWN and the money to buy it BUT the evil virus known to it's friends as Windows (tm) decided to cripple my hard drive, readin my 30 gb with 14 gigs free as a 30 gb with a mere 4 gigs free  evil machine

But IWD 2 wont need that much space so .....:D:shake::D:grin:

Mathetais, I am with you

I have the super-computer to play NWN and the money but I won't buy it for these reasons:
I want to play Single player
and
I like 2D.

So count on me.

IWD2 is a fantastic game, far better than NWN

Like some of the others that have posted above I velieve that IWD2 and NWN are good in their own ways. I posted this concern on another board before but I feel compelled to post it again:
The only thing that worries me is that people will overlook the great game that IWD2 is shaping up to be because it is using 2D graphics and isn't as fancy as say NWN or that cursed game Morrowind.

I must say that I agree about the avatars; they do look unfinished. At first, I thought that it was just my computer (which barely meets the requirements) but when a friend of my got the game, the avatars were only marginally better. The man owns a computer shop and has a computer that would make Disney envious.

So now I ask: Did they sacrifice too much for the 3d effects and the roving camera?

Ragusa

I finished NWN today, and now I'm desperately waiting for IWD-2, counting the days ... :( oh well :( NWN was sweet - 3e multiclassing and combats system and spells - great - and the graphics, especially mirroring and light effects were excellent, storyline linear but all right - even though most quest were of the fed-ex type. Some of the riddles and ideas all over the game were reall neat and there were actually quite a lot of quests to do. Int and wis based conversation options are a great achievement of NWN, and the persuade skill also is great.

But there were a few weaknesses, the worst disadvantage of NWN were the crap-AI henchmen and they are the reason why I really look forward to IWD-2:
I will have full control over my flexible, well composed party of 6 chars. I can equip and develop them however I need and like them best. They will <u>not</u> run ( even though you told them to stay where they are  ) into combat only to die because the enemies are vastly superior ....

I can't play NWN because my BRAND NEW computer doesn't meet the spec. Sods law, new computer + new game = New video card

I play it on BCs' computer, played for a total of one hour, level ten, got Tomi and done his quest and am just about to complete chapter one :rolling:

Anyway - IWD!, IWD!, IWD!

I am definatly getting it! Whatever happens!

Bought NWN. Started it up. Had to lower all the graphics just to make it run at a pace where it was playable. Still massive slowdown. How can this be? I have a 32 mb graphics card, 256 mb ram, full install, and my computer is only 50 mhz below the recommend. I'd hate to try and play it on the bare mimimums.

When i finally got it to work, it took me a mere half an hour to realise that the single-player sucked! So i loaded up the toolest. Me lovy toolset but no likey the rest of the game (don't know bout multi, only got a crappy dial-up).

I want IWD2 NOW!!!!

Look, I bet there is no person in the whole world that hates that result of overhyped marketing more than me, but...

But instead of whining, why don't you make a new singleplayer campaign that won't suck? You have the toolset.
I know from BG2 that Bioware can't write a decent AI script, but what stops you from making such? Also for lacks of story ideas, hey, if they don't have ideas, you most certainly do!

And get serious. RPGs were never about super graphics. That's FPS' domain. In FPS there is no need for a story so the time needed to make a game is wasted on graphic effects. In RPG if there is no story, then it's not enjoyable RPG. Make one!
Aurora sucks, I know that, but who cares? You bought it, why wouldn't you use it then? Give other people who bought NWN just for singleplayer campaign something to enjoy.

And just one more lil' note: the "I hate NWN" faction can't nor doesn't belong to IWD2 future players. There are lots of other games' players who feel deceived by NWN's singleplayer campaign. Regardless someone's saying that it's not so bad as it looks, I don't think it's so good as was forced through David Gaider's interviews and forum posts.
So my suggestion actually is that instead of throwing every kind of frustration on NWN, you just make a singleplayer campaign that is called "I hate NWN" and then you just incorporate inside murdering of everyone from Bioware who is guilty for turning you down with NWN. I assure you, such mod would be the most popular NWN mod on the net!

Extremist - Although i did not say it in my post i love the toolset because it's allowing me to take the game away from where it was put. In the game there was to much hack and slash (perhaps i did not play far enoguh into it). Since i got it, 4 days ago, i've made about 10 modules (and downloaded many more) for test purposes. Im currently making my first serious module/campaign which is going to have as little hack and slash as possible. I'm doing my best to make it as story driven as possible. The prelude/prologue is already done. I'm currently working on the first main portion of the game where what you say is the most important thing while you try to live in this town without the inhabitants realisin your real purpose (play my module and you shalt know what this is).

"it took me a mere half an hour to realise that the single-player sucked!"

Yeah. That's what happened to me too.

There was some game a couple of years ago that I played with a 3d engine similiar; you could rotate the camera. Wizards and Warriors?

And all the walls and archs get in the way so you can't see what's going on.

Bioware was sweating everyone getting tired of their engine, so they came up with a new one. But I just can't seem to get the hang of it. I *liked* being able to choose scripts. I *liked* having to purchase spells and memorize them. I hate having to constantly rotate the camera or hold down tab, just to see where the enemies are. I really hate not being able to scroll the game-screen. The map is a nice feature. I wish they would have expanded the dialogue screens to a larger portion of the screen.

The only thing I have to say; actually, the only thing I was thinking while I've been trying out NwN, is...

"Thank God IwD2 is 2D"

(yes, it's old. yes, 3D looks cooler. But, I can tell what's going on, and who's doing what, in 2D; which is, in part, precisely what D&D is all about)

[edit: Currently, Nwn is no longer residing on my hard disk. The diablo2 expansion is what I've moved to, which in terms of 3d engines, is a step up; at least I can *see* the enemy without having to rotate the camera.

Nwn (heck, even IwD2) would have rocked with an isometric view like Diablo2's. It's 3d; there's textures. But you can concentrate on crushing your enemies, seeing them driven before you, etc... without having to fiddle around with the camera *all the time*.]

I can't say I *hate* NWN, but I lost interest and finally stopped playing in the middle of chapter 3. I tried to love it, really I did! But it just wasn't PST, BG, IWD, or for that matter Arcanum. Did anyone else feel like a traitor to Gamedom for not loving the long-awaited Game to End All Games?

The 3rd edition rules throw me off quite a bit, but I think with a little time, I can get used to them.

And yeah; I'm let down by NwN quite a bit. I feel like I'm some freak of nature because everyone else is ranting about it, but I can't seem to get into it. Clumsy, one way or another (either the game, or me).

I almost wish that they had included two game engines with NwN; a 3d and a 2d one. I think I could get into it if it used the Infinity...

I think I'll enjoy IWD 2 more when I get it. Why? Because, despite my computer meeting all the requirements to play NWN, and then some, when i try to run the game, it plays horribly, it's so choppy you can't do anything(I think on the tech forums for the game it's being called the 'stuttering' problem). Oh, that, and someone seems to have lost my NWN cds... someone who will die as soon as I find out who.

Well... my computer actually run NWN perfectly (it's a new model).

But after completing the first chapter... it was... bluh. I don't want to play this game anymore... I don't know why people like to create new chars... BG2 was a lot better...

Sorry, I guess I am against the norm here but I liked NWN a lot better than IWD 2. Not only has it a better story line but the graphics are way better. Think guys, this is laying the foundation for the six character development in 3-D but our computers can't handle that load yet. And how many of us out there have dreamed of putting our own module together and now we have the tools to do it? IWD 2 ...nay, I think not.

Although I'm usually quick to jump on the "Reactionist" bandwagon :p ;) , I think I'm going to let this one roll on without me...

I like NWN...I agree that the Single Player version bites! But after cruising around Phlan for a bit, I think Multiplayer has great potential!!!

My advice to you: Upgrade your pc's, send an app to ALFA, and join in the carnage!!!

I can't play NwN with sound, so I don't play it (it doesn't work with my card, and I have a pretty new Dell with pretty good everything else). Anyway, no sour grapes. Upgrade time.

I like 2D. I think 2D more represents the thoughts behind D&D RPG'ing. Its more about the concepts of the actions you are taking than watching the graphic depictions of them. Does that make sense? Playing an IE game is just like marching your old Grenadier miniatures out and lining everything up, just better because it looks and sounds so cool!

But, the coolest thing about NwN is the toolset, and I don't even know much about it yet. The potential is just awesome. Making modules, DM'ing, swapping modules with friends and so forth. I probably sound naive because I've heard it takes some learning, but what a great idea.

I am a frequent visitor to this site but never participate in any forums. However, This particular topic provides me with an outlet for my possibly unique opinion. I dislike and will most likely never play NWN for the sheer fact that "I HATE" single character and first-person type games!!! The beauty of the Icewind Dale series is the fact that you can customize a full party of characters to suit your playing style. As a 37 year old who has been playing RPG's since well... the dawn of time, I am prone to re-creating my favorite p'n'p characters and putting them through their paces on computer. I am also guilty of playing characters that wouldn't seem out of place in the jungles of Vietnam or other contemporary settings. Consider my current party in IWD2: 1 Pal/Clc, 1 Ran/Drd, 1 Brbn/Rge, 1 Bard/Clc, 2 Mnk/Sorc. They are all at 5/5 level as I am well into the game at normal difficulty but with this kind of a "Special Forces A-Team", I believe I could handle the game even in HofF mode. The Baldur's Gate & Dungeon Siege series, while outstanding in their respects, still focus on one customizable character aided and abetted by people met along the way. NWN consists of 1 character and a single lackey at a time (whom I've nicknamed "Arrow-Magnet") so like the Diablo series, will never grace my hard drive.

All Of The Specs Sucks But I Finished The Game. (Later Upgraded To A Geforce4 Mx) :D

I got bored with NvN in the middle of chapter 2 :( However i like 3D engine.
Sure 2D is very nice but only to people who already know whose games are. I tried to convince my friends to play BG series IWD and these games but i only suceeded at one friend (second one is still considering). Now i dont think i would have so much problems with NvN only becouse of its 3D engine

But i do like IWD2 better. ;)
