Let's say I have a paladin in my party, and there's a really cool sword for him to use, BUT it's random. If I get another item in it's place can I hust reload?

Basically, are the random items generated before or during the game? Will I be able to reload or have to start over?

If I remember correctly, in IWD the items were generated just before the chest was opened, etc. I suppose that if you just reload to the point before ou opened the object, you would get a different set of items. But there is no knowing where any particular item like this would be located since they are random. If a sword is not located in chest A, there is a chance that it will be found in Barrel B. With the number of items contained in the random treasure list, you could open up a particular chest and never get that sword you want.

Corr ... fortunately for you, there are millions of industrious code-writers anxious to write cheat codes for this game. So, if your paladin really needs that cool sword and the gods of the Dale choose not to give it to you, you will probably be able to take matters into your own hands ...

(now, theologically speaking, would a paladin choose to cheat in a game to get a sword that would let him do more good, even though the gods chose not to bestow it up him? ... too many questions. I'm going to go cheat my BG1 Imoen to a higher Wisdom so I can make her into my much needed Cleric ;) )

Edit .... Corr ... I was kidding

Random item tables are generated when you enter the area (that is map, house, etc.)
Simple reloading beside a chest in the open will get you the same item every time, nothing random. You'd have to reload before you entered the area.

I wasn't looking to cheat, I rarely even use a paladin. That was only in theory.

Anyway, my question was answered by Tal, that's what I was wondering about. :)

Small packs of monsters will some times have a leader who carries random items.
