View Full Version : Magical blades

I recently decide to create a fighter who will become a even LVed fighter/sorcerer in the end. Next I find that the two good spells that give magical blades like phatom blade and the mor's sword(sorry, forgot the spellings) seems to be nices, except for the black blade of diaster which can blast enemies to nothing, but may lost good items in the process. so I came out with two burning questions that had been haunting my mind for so long:
1. Is there many creatures that are unaffected by +3 weapons?
2. Is there many single-handed blades that are better than the two spells I mentioned above?

I also found that fighter's feats like max attack, cleave, dirty fighting etc can works with the magical blades(the warrior's feats also apply to mor's sword which I found surprising) as well, so I think the fighter/sorcerer wielding mor's sword and protected/enhanced with stoneskins/tenser's transformation etc will be a good warrior. What's your comments?

You may find a problem in being unable to use armour (although you can use some of a fighter's plentiful feats to allow you some defence without repeated spell failure). Attempting to cast spells in the thick of combat has the irksome tendency to fail. Mordenkainen's sword has the advantage of keeping you from the front line. If you cast Tender's Transformation, you don't need fighter levels. A sorcerer maxes out at around level 20. However, because you'll almost certainly have high charisma, a paladin is a better fit for a second class (think of the save bonuses). It does mean that you need to be LG, though.

Yup! But problem is that I want more feats and I believe(not confirm though) that the concentration skill will help reduce my chances of spell-failure. For armour class, I will always have the 1st Lv spell "armour" casted on her right at the first battle after a new rest.
Another question:
If you can choose only one of them, which will be your choice and why?
1)This will be the starting stats of my drow fighter/sorcerer:
str:14
dex:20
con:12
int:12
wis:10
cha:10
She will only take a sorcerer Lv only when she has her cha increased via Lv ups. I will only increase her cha to 17, as mor's sword is a Lv7 spell. The advantages I can see is that drow have some immunities(which I think is quite important when facing spell-casters).
or
2)This will be the starting stats of my human fighter/sorcerer:
str:14
dex:16
con:12
int:10
wis:10
cha:12
She can take a sorcerer Lv at the first Lv up, as she already has a cha of 12. I will only increase her cha to 17, as mor's sword is a Lv7 spell. Her extra feat will most likely be the "luck of heros" which only human can have. Lastly, she will have more skills points.

The Concentration feat only means that you won't have your spell disrupted due to being hit by arrows/melee weapons/enemy spells.

What Chris is talking about is the chance of spell failure that is caused by wearing armor or carrying a shield. If you look at the description of any armor or shield, it will say, after the armor bonus information, "Arcane Spell Failure: somenumber%".

That means that if the character wearing that armor, or carrying that shield, tries to cast a spell, the spell has a somenumber% chance of failing, simply because of the armor or shield (or both-- if you have an armor that has a 15% chance and a shield with a 10% chance, then I believe your chance of spell failure is then 25%-- the chance is cumulative, afaik).

This can be countered by the "Armored Arcana" feat, which reduces "somenumber" by 5% for each feat taken-- but it can only be taken 3 times, meaning that you can't eliminate the chance of spell failure for anything but light armor anyway-- and what's the point in having a main line fighter who can't wear anything but light armor, or maybe medium?

So be warned, your spells are going to fail rather more than you might want them to with such a character, given that nice heavy plate mail carries a 35% chance of spell failure, and large shields carry a 50% chance. No way Armored Arcana is going to help much there.

Of course, you could pause=>take armor off=>cast spell=>pause=>put armor back on=>fight. Not exactly immersive role-play, though.

Huh... I will not be giving my fighter/sorcerer any armour. I'm going to use her high dex and the spell "armour",stoneskin, mirror image etc...
All right, I only need your comment on this question only:
(spell: Mor's sword+3) vs (Moonblade of Selune+4)
Which do you think is better in terms of attack and safety? Like the Mor's sword can be used a a distance, thus safer etc.
Thank for all comments.
