Did anyone do any experimenting to figure out the optimal PA substraction to use? I presume those 1-5 buttons there on the interface mean the number substracted...

Yeah, I think you're right. Don't know what else it'd be. I never really used the feat though, usually just took it to get cleave.

I always use 5 for my damage-dealer 2-handed weapon user.

My front line uses Expertise 5, and everyone else uses Ranged Weapons, so none of those

My level 9 Dwarf Barb/Fighter was using 1 axe and when I started Power Attack 3 I found pretty much equal number of hits with enough extra kick to each slash that orcs would go down faster. This was a solo run. I felt that 3 was "middle" enough to keep the BAB reasonable and nicer damage.
