well i cant help you there but why would you want a familliar any ways? i play as a sorcerer and i have a familliar but i never use it because it allways gets really close to dying when he attacks another creature. i think its just a waist of invitory space and a risk to your con. but thats what i think and if anyone can tell me how to use a familliar correctly i would be thrilled to have just some back up.

i am also a sorcerer, but i need a familiar for theif work, i would have a cat, but i lost it, cats are good having 99% hide in shadows, so they are good and fairy dragon, they are good, they are the only ones that i have had

Okay, the most obvious reason why you need a familiar is additional hitpoints.

The mage/sorceror was not meant to take damage... if so, Tenser's transformation would do nicely... and there are so many other spells that can prevent damage from being inflicted or taken....

Familiars are best for doing Thief work... if only they could drink the many potions of Master THievery that i have... sigh

Well, since you DO apparently have a familiar, you do in fact have the additional hitpoints. I can't really help you find the little guy, though.

I find it mildly ironic that Find Familiar is absolutely no help with actually finding your familiar. :P

I have heard of this happening to other people. I think it is a bug that is fixed with the patch so you might want to install that if you haven't already. Of course that won't bring back the one that is missing.

I suppose it should also be possible to put a new familiar in your inventory using Shadow Keeper. I don't know what affect this might have if the game thinks you already have one though. Makign a save game first before trying would be a must.

Shadowkeeper can be found here:

You can get the patch from here:

Just how did you manage to go back to Irenicus' Dungeon. I thought that there was no going back once you got out. You are talking about the dungeon where the game first starts right?

As for your sorcerer having a familiar in the opening dungeon - dude, tell me you didn't choose Find Familiar as one of the spells in your book. You must have - I don't think that scroll occurs in that dungeon. As a general rule, your sorcerer should avoid learning any spell that he will use rarely (or as in this case, once).

Slappy is right about the patch, by the way. One of the things it fixes is your familiar's annoying habbit of staying back when you enter a new area (happens in the dream sequences as well). I'd recommend getting and installing the patch and then re-starting your sorcerer with a slightly more useful spell selection. If you want a familiar, you should probably consider casting that spell from a scroll.

I tot 'You have to gather all your members before venturing forth' includes the familiar. meaning you cannot enter the other map without your familiar....

Rite?

Saukoon, that is correct but it doesn't work that way everywhere.

I.e. when you're dealing Plannar Prison (Haer'Dalis quest) - at the end your party is transported back to Athkatla but without familiar if he was out of your inventory. The best way to keep it is to always carry it in inventory and free it ONLY on special occasions (if there is any such occasion).

Personally, I love having a familiar. Itīs just so damn cool to have an animal reflecting your personality - plus that you have someone to pet from time to time :D
But then again, when you get Viconia you donīt need no stupid animal to pet......... :D

For my solo sorcerer, my familiar is an indespensible (for me anyway) friend. One of my favorite tactics now is to release my familiar - the Chaotic Neutral kitty cat - to be my eyes and ears. My main character, Yam stays hidden somewhere relatively safe and casts Project Image.

My protected self can then protect himself and go (with the cat - hidden in shadows or invis if needed - as an observer) kick some butt with no risk to my own precious hide. Almost as good, projected Yam can feel free to burn through my high-level spells because they come out of his projected spell book and not mine. The familiar needs to be there directing his fire because if projected Yam goes too far from the real Yam without the familiar, I can no longer see the enemies that are close to him.

At any rate, if it weren't for my familiar, my projected image wouldn't be nearly as useful in a solo game.

The only way you can get it back is to use the console. I can't believe noone told it already... I suppose noone ever heard for console on these boards before... Or the point of these boards is spam, spam, spam and spam some more...
And when you say something that you've had enough of those spams, mods get nasty *sigh*

----------------------------------------

Ok, first find file "Power Users.txt" in your main BG2 folder and open it - there you'll see how to enable the console window (search for keyword "debug" or "console").
When you enable it, start the game and activate the console window with CTRL+SPACE.
In console type this:
CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("FAMCAT")

The familiar will appear nearby and only thing you can do is to talk to it. You can't manipulate it for now! So, tell the cat that you're picking it up in your pocket to be safe.
Now, check your inventory and with right-click force item-formed familiar to get out of inventory.
Voila! The familiar now acts as it is supposed to.

----------------------------------------

And last, here's the answer before it gets asked:
No, you can't get familiar back with just creating item-formed familiar in inventory.

Anyway, please respond if it worked.

ok, thanks so far, the "famcat" worked with 1 problem, when i release it it disapears, and i cant find it, so half of what extremist said worked, but the other half didn't, has this happened to you???

ARGH!
The game is supposed to destroy previous familiar and use this newly formed one. That's how it works in my game with FMT.

Your saved game is probably too much screwed - as you already know BG2 is full of bugs and some of them are critical.

I gave my best shot, but now I have to admit that I can't help you there. :(
Either restart the game or keep playing without familiar.

[EDIT]

One more idea crossed my mind. Try this:
1. Use console to create familiar and pick it up in your pocket.
2. Move to another big area, i.e. from Docks to Temple District.
3. Now try to release familiar from your pocket.

Tiamat - sounds like it's time to clean out your backpack - it must be filthy.

I suppose this means goodbye :-X util forever!

I'm glad it worked.

Tiamat, familiar turns at it's proper version once you put it in inventory. Check what familiar goes to your alignment :p
