The lame manual has charts of trained and untrained skills but it never explains this. I know the idea of cross class skills, but this is something else.

I have read about people giving Disable Device, Open Lock, Pick Pockets and so on to non Rogues, meaning that they don't even have a level of Rogue! yet everytime I make a character that has these skills and I select the icon, it greys out and I can't perform these skills. How do we do it?

I have found that I must have a level of Rogue to be able to perform these skills, which I don't really want to do.

Can anyone explain how they did it without taking a rogue level?

Thanks in advance.

An untrained skill means you can attempt the skill with no skill points allocated to it.

A trained skill means that you cannot attempt the skill unless you have at least one skill point allocated to it.

Thanks for that, it makes so much sense now. But, why can't my monk open locks eventhough I gave them skill points in it? The little lock icon stays grey over the chest.

2 things come to mind:

Open locks uses Intelligence? How about your monk's?
Is he wearing any armor or shield with penalties?

No armour at all. And I never reduce stats below 10. I just dunno...
