Well, it seems as if I can't get into the "best CRPG of 2001" as some critics called it. The graphics are sweet, so is the story and I heared (lacking the oportunity to test it myself) that the interaction between the main char and his social surroundings shall be of a degree of complexity unmatched in any RPG up to date.

The reason for my trouble is the interface. It's definitely the worst I've ever seen. Having lend the game from a friend I also lack the manual (he managed to loose it ). So I have try out the mysterious interface myself. For all of you used to drag and drop - forget about it. The game doesn't support a mouse except for rough cueing of the ghost camera.

For playing you instead rely on the keyboard, which may be fine once you got used to it. However, I haven't yet been able to equip a weapon to my char, let alone to take items from a chest. You talk and fight with almost the same keyboard commands and when you accidentally hit the space key then you're "combat ready" and attack the guy you want to talk to.

So I'd really appreciate any help that would enable me to understand the interface and it's mysteries.

oh :D, the game is called GOTHIC. The horrors are directly related with the quality of the interface ;)

Ragusa, there were wery good ramblings about that game, I'll probably buy it. Sometime later, of course.

But if you want to see what is RPG that I can't stand, try with one of these two:
Wizards & Warriors
Arcatera

Well, I played on a little and eventually looked through the controls. I still have to say that the interface sucks period. Some examples:

The handling of the char, using the mouse keys and the keyboard only is clumsy. In combat you have to press the left mouse key + up to attack, + left/ right to hit left and right and back for defense .... something to get used to first. When you need healing you have to go to your inventory first, there is nothing like a quick-use slot. The only difference between attacking and talking is to press the "combat key" space first ... almost the same way you sort stuff in your inventory. To sum it up: Gothic's controls are similar to a fps. I think the handling is the only drawback of the game and can be pretty annoying sometimes :( ...

But now for the good part: Graphics are neat (not as good as RTCW but pretty good), dialogues are intelligent, characterisation is individual as well. The story seems pretty interesting till now too (I'm at the very beginning, just entered the old camp). So, with the drawback :( I mentioned, a rather promising game :)
