View Full Version : Final Fantasy games
Frostbite Mon, 8th Jul '02, 9:04pm I have a PSX, as well as my PC. And I have two of the final fantasy games,
FF7 and FF9, both on my playstation.
Both of them are amazing, aspecially FF7, and it's probably my favorite as well.
Even though this has probably been post before, I was just wondering whats your favorite one, on either PS1/PSX, PS2( Final fantasy X) or the PC, but I think only FF7 has been adapted for PC.
I think that the most popular will probably be Final fantasy 7 anyway.
PS, how the hell does any one defeat the ultimate weapon, and whats your best party?
Sapiryl Tue, 9th Jul '02, 12:16am FF7 is definately the best, FF8 is all right, FF9 is great, but I haven't played any of the others.
FF8 was actually brought to PC as well...
My best party was Cloud, Tifa, and Barrett. At the end, I had Cloud equipped with the Slash All materia and Tifa with the Double Cut materia. I had Barrett in there just for his limit breaks.
You beat Ultimate weapon by following him around after he appears and keep bumping into him with the Airship. You'll enter repeated battles where you have to fight him like you did the first time. Eventually, he'll hover by Cosmo Canyon and after you defeat him there, you'll get Cloud's Ultimate Weapon - the more hit points you have, the stronger the weapon is.
A good thing to do is to raise a gold chocobo and collect the materia scattered around the map in secret locations. Do this and you'll get "Knights of the Realm" which is simply amazing and deals close to 100,000 damage. Also, get Limit Breaks with all your characters for a quick finish.
Will Tue, 9th Jul '02, 1:40am My personal favourite is FF9; Ive been playing it through for a second time to get all the secret stuff I missed first time through. Ozma (secret boss) is a bit of a badass and I think my merry crew will need some levellin' before they even think about taking him out.
If you've got a PS2 I heartily recommend FFX. Its got the best mini-game out of all of them; Blitzball. The FMV sequences are incredible and the characters are all intersting. The sphere grid is a pretty nice to standard levelling up, too. Add to that the inexplicable coolness of Auron and you've got a fairly sweet little game.
As for my favourite FFVII party, its got to be Cloud, Tifa and Aeris. Dont suppose you can count Sephiroth...

ejsmith Tue, 9th Jul '02, 6:26am FF3/6 is my favorite, with FF1 as a runner up. FF7 has something almost neat to it, but when I factor in all of the Japanese culture to it, it really takes away from it.
Along with the fact that I had to read a 3000+ word plot synopsis just to even have the *faintest* idea of what was going on with the Chi and the nasty Americans.
Made my head swim for a week. Only stopped spnning after I read another synopsis with the 'token black guy' and 'wide-eyed, innocent, doe' as main characters.
Confusing culture.
Frog Tue, 9th Jul '02, 8:46am I've only played 4-7. I liked 6 the best because everything about it was great. Plot, Characters, Music, Villains.
You might say FF7 had good characters and I agree. But FF6 has 14 in total and 3/4 of them are developed to the point of being considered a main character. Plus it was nice and long. And the game became non-linear about half way through. (Unlike FF7 which stayed on one track most of the time, i.e. "There ain't no getting off this train")

total Tue, 9th Jul '02, 2:31pm I have PC so i finished FF7 and 8 only, liked both but yes 7th is better. I have tried the previous with use of emulators and similar but stopped after i found some bugs. I like mana system of the 8 and junctioning but i like story of the 7th part more (i like Cloud and hate that whining Squall) But i really hate that 9999 barrier!!! Defeated Ultima weapons in 8th (not a big problem with "hero" items) and i got gold chocobo in 7th but never managed to kill those ultimas :(
Volar Blackmane Tue, 9th Jul '02, 7:37pm FFX. I'm a sucker for good graphics. And the rest of it isn't too bad either.
Sol'Kanar Wed, 10th Jul '02, 5:49am Can't beat the classics. FF3/6 was the best console RPG I ever played. But then, I neither have, nor desire to buy a PS or PS2.
herf Thu, 11th Jul '02, 12:46am Personally I've played 6, 7, 8, 9 and some of 10 :D
6 rocks, Terra and the whole story really appeals to me, not the "Save the world" type of stuff that has followed in the 4 later games.
7 was fantastic, the idea of Materia is great, especially with the "All" and "Elemental" Materia, also I like the way Materia levels up, it's *believable*. But regardless of what people say, the Weapons were just too easy. Then again... The "Knights Of The Round" Summon Materia was fantastic...
8 is by far the best though, the junction system is just amazing, it allows for so much diveristy, each character can grow the way you want them to!
[Lesser known knowledge: The only single hit of damage greater than 9,999 points of damage in the game is GF Eden's summon.]
9... Well, 9 just plain sucks, the main character has a damned tail and the story is exactly the same as in 7...
10... I haven't played enough of ten for it to grow on me, bit at a first glance: The Sphere Grid looks annoying but likable but the characters look amazing...
Herf out... For now.
Abyssal Knight Fri, 12th Jul '02, 7:51am I've played 7,9,10 and my favorite was 7 by far. I played 8 for like 1 minute and I just didn't like it for some reason.
Enthasius Fri, 12th Jul '02, 11:34pm Final Fantasy 7 is the Ultimate RPG of my life so far. My second favorite RPG was the heavily unnoticed Xenogears, which in my books has a better story than FF7, a much better combat, but falls short on the difficulty area, Xenogears was pretty darn hard, FF7 had more opportunities to train to get better, and it had the Materia system.
My third favorite RPG would have to be.....Secret of Mana. If a re-make was made to PS2 or even PSX standards, it might rival the top two, but age just pinches the silver and gold medals.
P.s If anyone gets the chance, get Xenogears. It may not be a Final Fantasy, but it is from the Squaresoft family. so don't give me no :yot: stuff.
Will Sat, 13th Jul '02, 2:05am I'd love to get Xenogears, but I dont think its been released in PAL format, has it? Let me know if you know otherwise, anyone.
Are Final Fantasies 4 and 5 any good? FF Anthology was recently released over here and I was wondering if its worth parting with my hard-earned 20 sheets over....
Volar Blackmane Sat, 13th Jul '02, 1:07pm Unless you have a problem with the ancient graphics, go for it.
And the topic is about Final Fantasy, not Squaresoft, so Enthasius's post was kinda off-topic ;)
Padine the Paladin Sat, 13th Jul '02, 1:53pm I've got 7 and 9 and I think that 9 rules.
Sniper Sat, 13th Jul '02, 3:01pm I've got FF7, FF8 & FF9 and i must admit, they are all great!
My favourite game is probably FF7 ... i mean, there is so much to do there
FF8 has a good storyline ... and love theme ... the card games also bad ass
FF9 has a new feel to it ... it also deals with other races a bit more than the other two ...
Aziraphale Sun, 14th Jul '02, 9:54pm I'm working on FF7 at the moment, I'm looking forward to finishing it so I can get going with 6, 8, 9, and 10 :)
Rhythm Mon, 15th Jul '02, 5:20am My absolute favourite Final Fantasy experience (not game ;)) is Final Fantasy VI. The Terra story enchanted me, and almost everybody is the 'main' character. It's also gifted with great music. Nobuo Uematsu's greatest work I believe.
Next would be Final Fantasy VIII. The 'SeeD' concept is quite cool, and the card game is phenomenal. I can't imagine how much time I wasted just playing the card game. The love theme is also pulled off very convincingly, and I loved 'Eyes On Me'. The tragic love story of Laguna really hit me, and the ending FMV brought a tear to my eye. It's my favourite 'second-generation' Final Fantsy. I completed Final Science Fiction (:p) VIII at least 8 times.
Next would be Final Fantasy Tactics. Ivalice and the 50-year War proved to be a great background for (IMHO) the best storyline in Final Fantasy. The tale of a simple commoner rising to Kingship was a great one, full of plot twists and turns. And the untold tale of a single Beoulve rising against the odds to save the world is absolutely captivating. The job system, I feel is more refined than FFV, thus I put this experience above it. I love it.
The next FFs in order are FFIX, FFV, FFVII (groundbreaking).
The earlier FFs deserve a mention for their original story (at the time).
I haven't played FFX yet, but I've heard rave reviews about it.

Atreides Wed, 17th Jul '02, 3:59am Hmm, let's see, which Final Fantasy did I like the most? I'm not too sure on this one, I like several of the games. Then again, there are Final Fantasy games I don't like: FF VIII, and FF X is getting on my nerves, a gameplay issue only though (can't stand the sphere grid system.)
I think that the first Final Fantasy should be mentioned because in my opinion it's the hardest! Anyone that's played it will know what I'm talking about (has anyone played it?)
AMaster Wed, 17th Jul '02, 7:59am I've hated every FF game I've played. They're just so...linear. Detached. I feel like I'm watching TV, not playing a game. I don't have ANY influence on the story. I mean, with PS:T, this was okay because there was room for a few alternate paths, but FF...I dunno, it just bugs me.
The big, "impressive" spell effects get on my nerves. They make battles take waaaayyyy too long, and don't really look good at all-at least on a TV. The whole battle system, press a button, watch, wait 10 seconds, press a button, watch, lather, rinse, repeat annoys me as well.
but hey, that's just my opinion. If you love the games, more power to you
Frostbite Wed, 17th Jul '02, 1:44pm I have been playing a Lot on FF9, and I'm stuck. It's the battle with the second dragon, after the fight with Kuja.
It's after the FMV where all the silver dragons are flying out of the portal and being shot down by the Lindblum guys.
Anyway, Zidane is about level 40 something, and the others are quite close behind. Anyone know how to kill it. e.g party and tactics?
Will Thu, 18th Jul '02, 12:38am Ummm ... level up a bit more is all I can say. Cant really remember much about that particular battle which probably means it posed no real problems to me, but then I did loads of side quests and levelling and as a result had loads of hp, skills and spiffy gear.

void Tue, 23rd Jul '02, 9:45am I've gotta say, FF7 is great :D . I've got FF8 and 9 on my PS1 and 7 and 8 on my PC. I haven't played any of them for yonks though... I'd get FFX, but a PS2 cost WAAAYYYYYY too much...
Enthasius Fri, 26th Jul '02, 6:32pm FF7 was THE rpg, followed by the somewhat unnoticed square rpg Xenogears (I got it import), then FFX, then FF9, and im not gonna bother placing FF8.
Z-Layrex Sun, 28th Jul '02, 6:52pm FFX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FFX is UNBELIEVABLE!!!
Then FF8, pure class
Then FF7, I love you
Then FF9, come to daddy
Then FF3/6 who's my baby?
Then FF5 mmmmmm :D
Havn't played the others though
something Sat, 24th Aug '02, 8:16am FFX RULES!!!!!!!! i payed 100 bucks for it and it was worth every cent! the game makes you cry and laugh along with the characters, the graphics are sweet as hell and there is always some quirky twist to the storyline that makes u go "ohhh thats what he/she/it meant!"
i played all the FF games and i think theyre all great but FFX is the best of them all. i hear that FFXI is gonna be even better! i cant wait im so excited! :D
sorry for all the bad grammar. its not my fault blame my teacher!
Judas Thu, 29th Aug '02, 5:03pm I own FF 7, 8, 9, and 10. I enjoyed 8 and 10 the most (approximately equally... perhaps 10 a little more).
As for 7 and 9... I just don't associate as well with characters when their avatars are all cute. I mean, Sephiroth is one bad guy, but I just can't get scared by someone who is 4 feet tall and wears puffy pants. I'll admit that I haven't played 9 all the way through, but I didn't enjoy what I did play of it. Again... "cute" characters just don't do it for me, and tails don't help. The plot seemed more than a little cliched, too.
I found some of the mini-games enjoyable, but most of them I found annoying (I LOVED the card game in FF8, though... don't ask me why). As far as roleplaying goes... I think I need someone to explain to me why I need to do the things I do to get my ultimate weapons. No, I don't need to go to the depths of a monster-infested dungeon. Nope, no dragons, either. But I DO have to race this big yellow bird around in a field full of red balloons. That, I did not expect.
TheNovak Sun, 1st Sep '02, 10:07pm Yeeech...people think FF8's the best? Well, to each his own...
I own/have played FF1, FF2/4, FF3/6, FF4, FF7, FF8, and FF9. No PS2 for 10.
Little reviews...
FF1: It was great at the time, and it's still fun, but as a game itself, it's not too great. Fortunately, thanks to 8-Bit Theater (http://www.nuklearpower.com/comic/), FF1 suddenly has a ton of personality.
FF4: Never actually finished it, as my saved game screwed up as soon as Cecil ascended to paladinhood. Damned SNES. Cool game, though.
FF6: THE BEST. I still love this game, and use its characters in fanfiction. I can't even begin to describe how much I love Final Fantasy 6. Yeesh. The gameplay, admittedly, was standard FF fare, only slightly improved over FF4, but the plot and the characters... I dunno. I love this game :D
FF7: Palmer~! (http://clubsquaresoft.com/palmer/) Hey-hey! Sure, he only had three scenes and nobody really remembers him, but by god, he ruled. With tea and sugar and lots of lard. Palmer aside, this was an awesome, if linear game. Sephiroth f*cking ruled, as did Rufus. In fact, I'd say the baddies were at least as cool as the good guys. Cid and Vincent, of course, balanced things out :D
FF8: Bleeeegh...I hated this game. I hated the art style, the whole GF system, the plot, everything. The SeeD idea was cool, but...meh. I know some of you actually enjoyed this steaming pile of crap, so I'll lay off :p
FF9: I dunno. I really loved the game, especially the cartoony cutscenes. The art style was simply awesome. The plot was very decent, although not up to FF6 or 7. I think it was Squaresoft's way of apologizing for FF8 :p Sucks that they changed Steiner's name from Edward, though. The last time Square used my name, it was for a spoony bard :D
Arabwel Mon, 2nd Sep '02, 12:19pm I love FF7. I have read so much FF7 fan fic that it could fill a decent-sized bookcase. I love just about every guy in the game... everyone except for CId and Rude, for some reason.... The storyline is incredible, the materia system rocks, and I am POSITIVE that Cloud and Sephiroth were involved before the game (Wink wink nudge nudge).... Heck, pair any of the guys together and I am bound to have a plausible explanation.....
Anyways, I also have the older ones as emulations, but I have yet to play them due to Jenova being fixed and foe playing FF7....

SlimShogun Tue, 3rd Sep '02, 1:22am What about FFX? IMO it's a great freakin' game!
Padeen Dragonblade Fri, 6th Sep '02, 7:58am Ozma:Get your party to level 60's and have Zidane, vivi, Dagger(Or eiko whoever you prefer.) and quina.
Give them shadow absorbing equipment.
In combat use the abilitie magic hammer with quina 3-4 times and ozma will not have any mana and therefor will not be able to cast rendering her useless and defencless. Have Zidane with long reach and use him to attack while dagger uses the Eidolons she has. Shteiner must cotinouesly use shock and vivi magic. If your lucky Ozma will die in half an hour!

Blog Sat, 7th Sep '02, 5:23am The part that stood out the most to me in FF8 was Zell's limit break. It actually made the combat FUN rather than just waiting for your turn to attack and stuff...
@Herf
The only single hit of damage greater than 9,999 points of damage in the game is GF Eden's summon.] Not true. GF Cactuer at level 100 inflicts 10,000 damage. Not much more than 9999, but still greater than it nevertheless.
Gothmog• Sat, 7th Sep '02, 12:20pm I forgot almost all of it but i had a great tacticts:
I had zell attack and then one had ability to do the thing one had done before her :D and she instantly attacked with same power as zell
Padeen Dragonblade Sat, 7th Sep '02, 2:20pm This is going to soumd like I'm an over proud bastard but....
I am a master in the FF's. No boss in the game(Exept ultimisia and necron) managed to stay alive for more than fifteen minutes. I mean I had some nasty teqchniques that could woop anyones ass in no time. The only boss I had problems with was griever(Not the mix-griever). Anyway here are some tips on hard bosses in the FF's
FF9:
Soulcage:(Found in the lifa tree) Make Zidane steal while the others heal and protect. Once you've got all the stealable items use a phoezix down on him and presto his dead.
Ask me if you have any bosses that appear to be mighty and unkillable!
FF8:
Ultimesia:(For this to work you must have Squalls lion heart sword.) Start by casting protections on squall. Cast regen on him and then reflect! Once Squall is low on life or has the aura spell on him(Attak him for quicker results or use the aura spell) use the lion heart limit. This deals 46000 damage and will kill ultemesia! Do the same for the rest and with some luck you will win the game with no probs!
Adel:(For this to work you must have drained many Aura spells from (Squall enemy seed friend guy) ) Cast regen and reflect on (Whats her name Rinoa) Rinoa and make sure that she stays at full life!Cast Aura on Quistis and make her use the laser teqhnuiq( Can't remember the exact name or whwere you get it). It will do 9999 damage all the time!!! Just do this and use the others limits. Also if you have the spell that lowers peoples defence(Meltdown or something) use it until every one does 9999. Keep your spare charachet(Zell or whomever you like most) use healing. Adel has something like 80,000-100,000 Hp so get r4eady for a long battle. I managed this battle in thirty minutes.
Tell me of any asswooping bosses that you cant deafeat.(Maybe I should make a site on this???)
FF7: Well there arent many strong bosses in this and I haven't compleated it yet(I have done 5,6,8,9). I'm at the final genova so if there are any bosses you want to know about that you think are hard Either pm/tell me about them and you'll have a reply in no time!
Some tricks and tips:
FF7: Take the sub that you eventually get and go to the airplane were all the freaks are. Each one can be morphed into a source!
If you pair phoinix with some materia it can bring you back up to five times if your K.O'd!
FF9:Buy the griffin heart the dogas artifact and the rats tail. If you leave town and go to the actune house you will be able to buy the mahgical fingertip. With this you can get Steiners ultimate weapon at Daguero called the excalibur!
Buy the same artifacts and go to the Black mages villages and talk to th mage at the record player to hear the FF9 music!
Any questions??? Pm me and they will all be answered!!!
Ray192 Wed, 11th Sep '02, 7:45pm Final Fantasy Tactics. Don't like the regular FFs.
Enthasius Wed, 11th Sep '02, 9:18pm Why not? Just because there is some STORY in there?
Ray192 Fri, 13th Sep '02, 8:42pm "Why not? Just because there is some STORY in there? "
ahh, I don't like they're stories, they're too predictable(I mean teh major twists), they're always some big bad monster /evil guy trying to destory/control the world and you have to save it, another problem is the random battles, they have frustrated me out of my minds, and I hate they're combat, I'd much prefer wizardry 8's, and the linearity sucks too, since it doesn't give me much in the terms of replayability, and I have to have games that will keep me playing for 6 months due to money problems.
TheNovak Sat, 21st Sep '02, 8:07am Besides, FFT just rocked balls :D
Milliardo Peacecraft Mon, 23rd Sep '02, 1:58pm Funny how many people like FFVII. I have both VII and VIII on my PC, but I never enjoyed VII. It didn't grab me the way VIII did.
