I just thought my all time favorite genre deserved a post as it seems its pretty unrecognized these days.

So favourite autohrs/books of the genre?.

As for myself I'm still in love with Gibson's work, i read Neuromancer when i was 12 and have never been able to put it down since, although his new book was awful ( someone could have handed it to me with the author name missing and id never have even thought for a second Gibson wrote it )

I'm also pretty fond of Bruce Sterlings work ( Distraction being a nice mix of tech and politics ) and I've got a few Neal stephenson books ( though i find them to be a little too far fetched for my liking ).

Gibson is good, though his later stuff was too weird. My personal fave in this genre is Walter Jon Williams. He has more action.

After Gibson started, in my opinion, to go downhill, I pretty much gave it up because it never was my personal favorite genre. I did like Snowcrash, but not much else that Stephenson wrote.

The best I've read in this genre is a series by George Alec Effinger. The books are, "When Gravity Fails," "A Fire in the Sky," and "The Exile Kiss."

He writes of a not too distant future of 'cyberpunk' meets the middle eastern Islamic culture and ghettos. Crime and detective stories meshed with 'cyberpunk' but not the extreme variety found in other works. People have implants and the like but in the ghettos they use them more as a futuristic drug, logging on fantasies and other personalities etc than as a computer hacking tool. It is really great in how it shows that once people have a new technology one of the first things they determine is how to debase it -- internet porn anyone? It's a really unique and, imo, good series. Unfortunately, few people have heard of it and it's out of print. You can however find used copies via Amazon.

Gibson is godly weird. He's got very non standard style. I like that.
