View Full Version : POLL: Have you read Dune?
chevalier Sat, 5th Nov '05, 5:42pm Just as the topic says. If you'd like to discuss Dune, feel free to, but I'm mostly interested in finding out just what the poll asks.
Myself, I've read them all plus two of what Herbert's son wrote (House Harkonnen and House Atreides). I loved the computer games they made of it and the movies, although I'd really rather they had made it by the book and it was the biggest flaw that they didn't. I'd love to see a big multi-level multiplayer strategy game in the Dune universe, with High Houses and Landsraad and everything. Not like I wouldn't love to play a Dune RPG one day.

* No, I haven't - 22% (9)
Warrior of the World Sat, 5th Nov '05, 5:51pm My friends have been telling me to read it for years. I actually bought it yesterday, although I am going to read my way through Rama: Revealed before I start it.
Cap'n CJ Sat, 5th Nov '05, 5:55pm I've read Dune, Dune Messiah, and House Harkonnen. I enjoyed all three, and i keep meaning to look out for House Atredies.
The first Dune game I ever played was Dune 2, and it was one of my favourite games for months :)
After finding this thread, I feel like re-reading the original Dune (again!)
AMaster Sat, 5th Nov '05, 10:05pm Er...I read the first forty pages. Does that count?
Undertaker Sat, 5th Nov '05, 10:07pm I have read the entire series :p
Wordplay Sat, 5th Nov '05, 11:28pm Had my copy of them for quite some time now, but somehow I haven't got around reading them just yet. Really should, but it's always about the matter of sparking the interest. :hmm:
Morgoroth Sat, 5th Nov '05, 11:28pm I have read Dune and Dune Messiah. The first one was great but the second was a lot worse and from what I've heard it just gets worse after that so I gave up with the series then.
Lost Meme Sat, 5th Nov '05, 11:31pm I've read Dune, but not any of the others.
kuemper Sat, 5th Nov '05, 11:57pm The only one I haven't read is House Harkonnen, but like Undertaker, I read Herbert's 9 books and the first one by his son. I didn't even realize there were games based on Dune. I've seen 3 of the movies and I like Lynch's version best.
DarkStrider Sun, 6th Nov '05, 12:19am I've read Dune through to God Emperor several times Chaprt House and Heretics only once I was losing interest by that stage
Enagonios Sun, 6th Nov '05, 8:46am how many books are in the series? if there aren't too many i may consider it. never read it.
Undertaker Sun, 6th Nov '05, 8:49am IIRC Frank Herbert wrote 9 Dune series books and the last was Chaprt House.
Ziad Sun, 6th Nov '05, 1:51pm Nope not nine, only six. They're, in order:
Dune
Dune Messiah
Children of Dune
God Emperor of Dune
Heretics of Dune
Chapterhouse: Dune
Then Brian Herbert wrote 4 others (until now) with Kevin J. Anderson:
House Atreides
House Harkonnen
House Corrino
The Butlerian Jihad
The only one I haven't read from this bunch is The Butlerian Jihad, and considering how dreadful the previous three were, I probably never will. The writing's terrible, the story is a poor rehash of existing plot threads from the original series, and charaterization is ridiculously childish.
I've also seen Lynch's movie, and the first mini-series (Dune). I like the Lynch movie a lot, but the mini-series is not bad either. I've also played Dune, Dune 2, Dune 2000, and Emperor: Battle for Dune. The first 2 are the only ones worth mentionning really, and both are excellent (Dune 2 was in a way the father of the RTS genre)
The original series by Frank Herbert is brilliant all the way through, IMO. The first one's the best, but I like all the others, and each one has a flavor of its own. The ecological theme is continusouly woven throughout the whole series, and really taken to its logical extreme in the last book. It's the best science-fiction series I've read.
Equester Sun, 6th Nov '05, 2:16pm Nope not nine, only six. They're, in order:
Dune
Dune Messiah
Children of Dune
God Emperor of Dune
Heretics of Dune
Chapterhouse: Dune
Then Brian Herbert wrote 4 others (until now) with Kevin J. Anderson:
House Atreides
House Harkonnen
House Corrino
The Butlerian Jihad Brian Herbert and Kevin J. anderson have writen more, they have finished there legends of Dune triology, which contains The Butlerian Jihad, The machine crusade, the battle of Corrin. And they also mafe a guide to the dune universe(the name escapes me).
I have read up until children of dune and the 3 legends of dune books, played the games.
I Own both the movie and the miniserie over dune, on dvd. In my oppinion david lynch movie is crap, he changed a lot of the story and his changes are wierd and really bad, the mini serie is way better, its 4hour long with really god actors and follows the book very good. i have also seen the miniserie over messiah+children of dune, which is just as great, sadly haven't been able to get it on dvd.
Laiwethel Sun, 6th Nov '05, 2:56pm I've read up to Children of Dune, but I just bought God Emperor yesterday and I'll be starting to read it soon enough.
I'm looking forward to the read.
Incarnate Sun, 6th Nov '05, 8:10pm I have read the entire series but Morgoroth is corect the final books are not that great :(
Harbourboy Sun, 6th Nov '05, 8:21pm I have only read Dune. It was OK, but not interesting enough for me to bother reading the sequels.
Victor Eremita Mon, 7th Nov '05, 5:27pm I've read "Dune" twice. It's a classic. I haven't read any of the others, but at one time or another I probably will...
T2Bruno Mon, 7th Nov '05, 5:40pm I've read all of the Dune books by Frank Herbert -- I just can't get myself to read any of the books written by Brian.
Ziad Mon, 7th Nov '05, 8:05pm I just can't get myself to read any of the books written by Brian. One word. Don't.
Short and to the point :)
This (http://penny-arcade.com/view.php?date=2003-10-15&res=l) is a good approximation to my thoughts as I was reading the "House whatever" trilogy (some may find this comic offensive. You've been warned)
Being the son of a writer, makes a writer not.
Iago Mon, 7th Nov '05, 9:53pm I read Dune just 2 months ago. It was quite good. I'm already in possession of the next two parts (messiah and children) which I happened to find in a bookshop for 3 francs, so I bought them. But they look so huge, and I am intimidated by huge books... And anyway, I have to get my Zelazny completely done before I can start with something in between.
Carcaroth Thu, 10th Nov '05, 2:00pm I've read (and own) the original 6, the three "house" prequels, and the Legends of Dune trilogy, as well as the short on-line prequel "Hunting Harkonens".
I actually quite enjoyed the Legends of Dune trilogy, I found it well written and offered a good History lesson of how the Dune universe came about.
However they made the huge mistake of deciding that ALL of the new ideas seen in Dune must have come about at the same point of time, so we see the creation of the Guildsmen, Bene Gesserit, Bene Tleilaxu, Fremen, Suk Doctors, Mentats, Space Folding, Shield technology, Cloaking, Face-dancers, Cloning etc etc come about at the same time which is quite simply preposterous. I think they even had the discovery of soo-stones.
Falstaff Thu, 10th Nov '05, 4:14pm To my undying shame, I have not read Dune. It's on my "to read" list though, so If intentention counts for anything...
[edit] - bought it yesterday. Quit making those "Oh My God! What's Wrong With YOU!" faces behind my back.

The Kilted Crusader Sun, 13th Nov '05, 7:50pm I've read it and really enjoyed it. I'd like to get hold of the sequels sometime. I guess a trip to the library is in order :p
NonSequitur Mon, 14th Nov '05, 3:05am I've read the original, but really haven't been inspired to read the rest. The Butlerian Jihad stuff piqued my interest, but not enough to buy or read them.
Oh, and the Dune PC games rocked (although the AI in Dune 2 REALLY sucked).
EDIT: The David Lynch movie was a bit weird, but I guess that's to be expected.
Ziad Mon, 14th Nov '05, 8:30pm The David Lynch movie was a bit weird, but I guess that's to be expected. Hey, what else can you expect from a guy whose first movie was Eraserhead? :)
I think that if you've read the book, and can accept some odd deviations from the book, you can really enjoy the movie. I have the shooting script, and some original scenes in it which sadly did not make it into the movie are truly brilliant.
Arabwel Mon, 14th Nov '05, 9:20pm Yup, ahve read, repeatedly. Same goes for some of the sequlls.. i think I wtill have Chapterhouse; Dune sitting around waiting to be read...
liked the David Lynch movie. Saw it before I read he book, in fact...
JSBB Tue, 15th Nov '05, 7:10pm I read the first three but I didn't find that they lived up to their reputation of being masterpieces. Overall I would say that they were good but not great.
Hugo Mon, 23rd Jan '06, 10:12pm I've read 5 of the original 6 books, IIRC they were pretty good but it's been a long time. Think I'll read them again next time I get bored and go sit and read in our local library... Mmm books!
:borg:
Merlanni Fri, 27th Jan '06, 10:07pm Well what can I add about the dune books. The first 4 are masterpieces in the class like Lord of the rings, devilprinces by Jack Vance and Lords of darkness by Tanith Lee. The last two seem to be forced.
As with many prequels/sequels/ spin offs etc etc. it are just bleak copies. If it where not dune books they would be good enough to please many. But with the name Dune you expect something. If you cannot deliver, don't bother.
Lastly I can add that the dutch translations are reasonable. I know, a classic you read in the native tongue, like Das Boot in german, but for the masses it works.
Abomination Wed, 1st Feb '06, 9:17pm Read every book in the series by both the father and the son. I read the books by the father for their excellent writing, I read the books by the son simply because I enjoy the Dune universe.
I've played many of the Dune games: Dune, Dune II, Dune 2000 (bleh!) and Emperor - Battle for Dune. Like Chev I see huge potential for a massive 'Dune' game that goes past the C&C basic type RTS.
Warrior of the World Wed, 1st Feb '06, 9:37pm I've read Dune and Dune Messiah now, but progress is hampered by the fact that I haven't been able to find a copy of Children of Dune anywhere.
