Wildfire

Ok, at the request of the mighty Sorcerer himself, here is a short guide covering some of the most common acronyms in use both here on the boards and in the chatroom. Contrary to public opinion, I'm not perfect, so I'll probably have left some really obvious ones out, so say something if I've missed something that really should be here.

Acronyms relating to the boards, Sorcerer's Place, and the games covered here:

SP - Sorcerer's Place
SPS - Sorcerer's Place Supporter
SPSA - Sorcerer's Place Supporter Account (http://www.sorcerers.net/Supporters/index.php)
SPMP - Sorcerer's Place Member Photos (http://groups.msn.com/SorcerersPlaceMemberPhotos)
BoM - Boards O' Magick
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions (BoM FAQ is here (http://www.sorcerers.net/ubb/faq.html), General SP FAQ is here (http://www.sorcerers.net/Info/FAQ/index.php))
FAI - Friendly Arm Inn
MM - Minstrel's Medallion
SS - Sorcerer's Sundries
AoDA - Alley of Dangerous Angles
SotW - Screenshot of the Week
BG - Baldur's Gate
TotSC - Tales of the Sword Coast
DSotSC - Dark Side of the Sword Coast
SoA - Shadows of Amn
ToB - Throne of Bhaal
IWD - Icewind Dale
HoW - Heart of Winter
TotLM - Trials of the Luremaster
PS:T - Planescape: Torment
PoR 2: RoMD - Pool of Radiance 2 : Ruins of Myth Drannor

SoU - Shadows of Undrentide
HotU - Hordes of the Underdark
ToEE - Temple of Elemental Evil
(A)D&D - (Advanced) Dungeons and Dragons
(C)RPG - (Computer) Role Playing Game
3E - Third Edition
P&P - Pen and Paper

More general ones often used in the chatroom, and occasionally in here:

Afaik - As far as I know
Afk - Away from keyboard
Asap - As soon as possible
Brb - Be right back
Bbiab - Be back in a bit
Bbl - Be back later
Btw - By the way
Fyi - For your information
IE - Internet Explorer/Infinity Explorer
Iirc - If I recall correctly
Imho - In my humble/honest opinion
Lmao - Laughing my arse off
Lol - Laughing out loud
Ltns - Long time no see
mIRC - Standalone IRC chat program used to reach SP chatrooms
Np - No problem
NS - Netscape
Omg - Oh my god
Otoh - On the other hand
Rotfl - Rolling on the floor laughing
Rotflmao - Rolling on the floor laughing my arse off
Rtfm - Read the ****ing manual
Rtffp - Read the ****ing front page
Tmi - Too much info
Ty - Thank You
Wb - Welcome back
Wtf - What the ****
Yw - You're Welcome
*eg* - Evil grin
*g* - Grin

jIRC (http://www.sorcerers.net/Community/IRC/chat.php) - Not exactly an acronym, but people get confused with it nonetheless. jIRC is the java applet used on SP to reach the chatrooms without having a standalone chat program installed.

---

One final thing, since I don't think there is anywhere else to put this:

There is no number 1 member. That was the default account set up with the boards and no longer exists.

So did I, but Herf thought otherwise and, like the fool I am, I believed him! :)

Ah well, I'll edit it so that it has both versions.

You forgot "WB" for welcome back!

A few Others:

WC - Water Closet
ICBWIAFKA - I can't believe Wildfire is Away from Keyboard Again!
HCPP - Having a Chicken Pot Pie
SMB - Spilled My Beer (or Beverage for you under whatever your country's drinking age is!)
MHM - Mystra Hates Me!
ZPIIZR - Zee Pearl Iz In Zee River!

That's all I can think of...But they are by far the most important ones!
 :spin:

I've added WB now, although I don't think I need to really add the rest ;) :p

Thanks Wildfire! I'll just add some more info about the QuickChat applet at http://www.sorcerers.net/chat.htm

As you know, that url goes to the FAI and you can use it to chat without downloading a separate program like mIRC. There's a catch, however... Since Micro$oft lost the lawsuit again Sun, they're not putting any useful Java into Internet Explorer from 6 on any more. So if you want to run any useful applets like the QuickChat one on that page, you need to download Sun's Java VM (http://java.sun.com/getjava/installer.html). There's a test java animation on that page as well, so you can check if you already have Java VM installed properly or not.

Once you download and install it off that page, go to IE's Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and find the "Java (Sun)" category. Put a tick in the "Use Java 2 etc." square, close the browser, restart your computer, and you're set to use any Java stuff you come across on the Internet. It's a one-time procedure and although the file is 11MB, it's worth downloading it since Java is widely used. This is also an override if M$'s proprietary Java VM in your OS gets screwed up at some point so again, very useful.

(Might want to add IE and NS to the list, Wildfire. And QuickChat with a link and explanation.)

P.S.

This is a thread to help newbies, not inundate them with meningless false acronyms you made up. Therefore anything that is not on topic in here will get deleted, like the two posts I deleted just now. Just a warning.

One thing for IE5.5 (and perhaps older versions) users:
Sun's JavaVM doesn't work well with these so if you have problems with IE after installing it just disable it in Tools/Internet Options/Advanced.

As for Wildfire's list, I'd like to see ASAP (as soon as possible) added. ;)

[EDIT]
Tal, it doesn't work for me on Internet Explorer version 5.5. In your case it's version 6.0.

Taluntain
Sat, 31st Aug '02, 3:55pm
Ex, I think that's a problem only with the developers' version. I installed the Sun user Java VM yesterday myself, and it's working flawlessly. It might have been bugged in both before, but it's working fine now. Just FYI.

Edit: Yes, I have IE 6.

Well I am a newbie, to these boards anyway.

How do you change your avatar?

Or is it some kind of ranking system?

Mollusken

You can't change it by yourself, and it's a ranking system (you'll get more gems as you post). More info here (http://www.sorcerers.net/ubb/faq.html#custom).

My football coach in high school (I only played one year before I discovered a surprising talent for running a long way through cow pastures) used to yell "BYA," which stood for "Bust your @$$." We started to respond with "SMD!" The explication is left as an exercise for the reader.

[Recall and remember meaning the same thing, your post doesn't add anything new.] -Tal

One question:
What does BAB mean?
Base Armor something?
It has something to do with character stats iirc...

[Base Attack Bonus, but this is a 3e rule acronym. You should ask about it in the D&D forum.] -Tal

Back in the good ol' Compuserve days, we used
<G> Grin
<BG> Big Grin

I still use those in email and in NG, as there are no graphical smilies in pure text, just as there wasn't then on Compuserve.

So there you have another one:

May I suggest that the initial terminology stuff be placed permanently at the top of the SS board -- kind of like the forum guidelines? Or, could the list be placed in the FAQ?

Taluntain
Wed, 16th Apr '03, 8:14pm
There are too many stickies in SS already, and I'm waiting to drop some to pin even more. The list is linked to in the Welcome PM however, and that is linked to in the sticky on top of every forum's topic listing.

I guess I could put a link to it in the FAQ too, though.

Nobody's mentioned the IJA (impatient jackass) rule, yet. As defined by Death Rabbit:
For the sake of keeping the thread active and fun, if the person who's quote you've responded to does not confirm that you are correct within 24 hours of your answer, you are then assumed correct by default, provided no one else chimes in with the correct answer within that time or disputes your answer. For example: Since JSBB guessed, Frostmage never confirmed and no one contested JSBB's answer, it then became JSBB's turn. Since it's been over 2 days since JSBB's original post, the "next impatient jackass" clause may be evoked by...well, the next available impatient jackass. I'm pretty sure it only applies to quote games. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

Taluntain
Thu, 21st Jul '05, 2:49pm
It's a thread-specific "rule", so it's not going to be listed here.
