View Full Version : Pop Ups reepnorp Mon, 4th Nov '02, 12:20pm GAAAH! Someone please help me! Everytime I go to a link on SP, I'm suddenly logged out, and ads are everywhere. Does anyone know what is going on? Taluntain Mon, 4th Nov '02, 10:07pm 1. Wrong forum. Moving. 2. Which browser are you using? Are your cookies enabled? reepnorp Tue, 5th Nov '02, 11:51am Internet Explorer 5. I have no idea if my cookies are enabled, so how do you do that? Taluntain Tue, 5th Nov '02, 7:45pm For starters, get IE 6 or at least upgrade to IE 5.5. Then go to Tools/Internet Options/Privacy and put the slider down to accept all cookies. Extremist Tue, 5th Nov '02, 8:07pm In IE 5.0 and 5.5 it's in Tools->Internet Options->Security Upidstay Wed, 6th Nov '02, 1:19pm I have posted regarding this before, and was seriously hammered by all responders. I gotta say that I really hate pop up ads. I do not have my cookies enabled, because I don't want the invasion of my privacy. I find myself coming to this site less and less because I am frankly sick of having to X out of the 6-8 pop ups that constantly appear. And I have the same problem, my aging computer gets confused and crashes or simply shuts down my browser. It is a real pain the neck. I love your site, except for all of the freakin' ads. I know you have to make money, but enough is enough. reepnorp Wed, 6th Nov '02, 7:15pm Right now I am on a different computer, but my brother deleted all of the cookies on the other one! What should I do? Taluntain Wed, 6th Nov '02, 8:22pm Upidstay, I can't imagine how you can get around anywhere on the net because practically every site in existence puts at least one cookie on your computer, so you must see pop-ups asking you to accept cookies much more often than actual pop-ups. Cookies do not invade your privacy in any real way. Not the ones on SP anyway. All they do is write that pop-ups displayed for you and won't display again for so many hours. But if you willingly take that ability away, you can blame no one but yourself. And yes, enough is enough. You yourself are making the pop-ups display with your blocking of cookies. You know that this is the reason, and still you keep complaining. What do you expect me to do? Remove all pop-ups just because you won't put cookies on? Sure thing, as soon as you start paying me $140 monthly to cover the server costs, I'll gladly remove all pop-ups. reepnorp, nothing... Simply enable them and the one for SP will register next time you load the site or forums. reepnorp Thu, 7th Nov '02, 12:46pm Hoe do you enable them? Blackthorne TA Thu, 7th Nov '02, 4:18pm Look above. Your question was answered by Tal and Extremist for different versions of IE. Jack Funk Thu, 7th Nov '02, 5:36pm I don't know about every six hours. I get the pop-ups everytime I: * go to the homepage (1 pop-up) * go to the forum page for the first time in a session (2 pop-ups) I have cookies enabled. Having said that, I don't mind at all. You could double the number of pop-ups and it would be fine. Additionally, I used to link directly to the forum, but now I go through the homepage to make sure that I get the extra pop-up. SP is worth it. [ November 07, 2002, 18:36: Message edited by: Jack Funk ] Falstaff Thu, 7th Nov '02, 6:45pm Really! How terrible can looking at a couple of innocent pop-up ads be?? It just is not that horrible of a thing! Taluntain Thu, 7th Nov '02, 8:05pm Yes, the front page will always spawn 1 pop-up actually. But that's the only instance where this happens. (Aside from a few download-heavy BG2 pages.) reepnorp Thu, 7th Nov '02, 8:43pm Thank you guys so much. But when you were telling me how to enable them, you forgot to mention going to "Custom Level" or whatever it was. Thanks, it is working better now. Big B Fri, 8th Nov '02, 1:05am I quite like them. I keep refreshing the page until I get to my favorite one. :1eye: I wonder, are the pop-ups regional specific? Will someone in Finland get an American Singles Service Pop-up? Taluntain Fri, 8th Nov '02, 12:09pm Nope, there are not that many different ones. The sad story is that while they pop-up for everyone, I basically only get paid for those who show in English-speaking countries. :( All the rest simply don't count. And they're filtering out more and more international IPs every month so I get less and less money. JC Denton Mon, 18th Nov '02, 11:52pm If you are so annoyed by the pop up then get a pop up killer or the Webbrowser Opera that have built in pop up killer then the problem is solved! Gonzago Mon, 18th Nov '02, 11:56pm You mean all this time I've been waiting for pop-ups to load completely (so you get the money) instead of zapping them, but you still don't get the money? (I live in France.) Aaaargghhh. Not that I mind the pop-ups in and of themselves, but when you're internet pc is a 133mz, it makes loading times painfully long.. Again: Aaaaaarrrrggghhhhh. Taluntain Tue, 19th Nov '02, 3:34pm Sometimes it counts traffic even if it isn't from USA. Just depends how good their filtering is. So no, I can't say for sure that it didn't count. But I have no way to check if it did either. Wordplay Fri, 22nd Nov '02, 11:41am Pop-up killers are of great use and every one should have one installed. Most of them have different options that enable specific pop-ups... But you knew this already, right? For those who do not know where to get this kind of software, visit www.webattack.com (http://www.webattack.com) ->freeware ->pop-up killers. [ November 22, 2002, 12:42: Message edited by: Virne ] Taluntain Fri, 22nd Nov '02, 8:10pm Yea well, if everyone used them I could close SP right now since I wouldn't have enough money without them to pay for the server bills every month. In other words, the pop-ups keep SP alive. Don't kill them unless you have a very good reason to do so. Thank you. ejsmith Sat, 23rd Nov '02, 12:58am "Nope, there are not that many different ones. The sad story is that while they pop-up for everyone, I basically only get paid for those who show in English-speaking countries." I was wondering about all that. I know popup companies have become more, and more choosy about who they accept and who they reject. Either way, I donated $20, so I figure that earns me a couple of months popup free with a clear conscience. :) |
