View Full Version : POLL: Future SP Logo Font
Taluntain Sun, 10th Nov '02, 8:12pm Hello all. Time for a quick poll, and I want all of you to participate. By clicking here (http://www.sorcerers.net/sp.bmp) (and yes, it's a bmp on purpose, so don't complain, just wait) you will be shown an image with 5 examples of the SP logo in a different font. What is important here is the text saying "Sorcerer's Place" that you can see on each image.
From top (number 1) to bottom (number 5), please vote which one is your favourite. Keep in mind that, as a logo, the same font would be used in logo pics throughout the site and you'll be looking at it for a long time in the new site design. So make sure you really, really like one more than all the others, and vote for that one. Thanks!
P.S.
The logo images will change, so you shouldn't base it on how well it fits with this specific image. The logo will randomly load from a pool of 20 or so different ones, and I need to use the same font style on all of them.

reepnorp Sun, 10th Nov '02, 8:19pm Tal, I can only see three of them, is that right?
Z-Layrex Sun, 10th Nov '02, 8:22pm Yep, as I said before the 2nd one. I hate the 5th.
No Reep you should be getting 5.
Big B Sun, 10th Nov '02, 8:26pm Ah, ok. Well I still really like choices 3 and 4. But I think I like 3 the best, it just flows.
What excites me the most is the randomly loading background image for the logo. That's going to be cool.

Thorin Sun, 10th Nov '02, 8:28pm Althought the 2nd image looks the best, because of its flowing design. It has a problem in that that letters are dithered making it hard to read. I voted for the first on since it is easy to read and does not look ugly. I would rather see number 2, but only if the quality of the letters where better.
Uluk the Armripper Sun, 10th Nov '02, 8:46pm I had difficulties to choose from between #2 and #3. But I decided to vote for #3 mainly because it's easier to read. Things are fine if the size of #2 is big enough. But anything smaller than in the picture is probably not a good idea...
Taluntain Sun, 10th Nov '02, 8:57pm If you can't load the image properly, right-click on the link and select Save As. It will download on your computer and you can open it with any program for images.
reepnorp Sun, 10th Nov '02, 9:12pm When I right click it nothing happens. But don't worry, thank god I know what F11 does. ;)
Errol Sun, 10th Nov '02, 10:00pm Hmmm...after a long time, I decided for Number 2. I would have liked to see number 1 in non-italic, but i was told it was Italic by deafult.
One thing I would advise against is putting the logo over 2 lines, but to keep it on 1 line.
:)
Nice stuff!
Tiamat Sun, 10th Nov '02, 10:04pm the 2nd one, by far.
Uytuun Sun, 10th Nov '02, 10:10pm I agree with Gopher and Tiamat. The second one is the best.
joacqin Sun, 10th Nov '02, 10:22pm I like the one we have now so naturally I chose the third as it is the one that is most similar to the current one. I am a conservative ;)
Nobleman Sun, 10th Nov '02, 11:42pm The first one looks to me as a cyberlike text. Nothing sorcerer-ish about it.
The second is far more adventurous. Perhaps too much and too classic.
number five looks as a mundane writing. Of course not a bad font for other things. But I prefer otherwise for a logo. ;)
--------------------------------------------------
Down to three and four. Can't really notice any conceptional differences. But as Joacqin says number three is kinda SP trademarked. Something unique. Another reason to have second thougts before choosing the exotic number "two" ;) .
I voted for "four" because it had a flavor of a sorcerer's handwritings, but I might regret later and go for number three. Good call Joacqin.
Spellbound Sun, 10th Nov '02, 11:58pm The 2nd one has the most originality and makes a statement of uniqueness. ;)
Nobleman Mon, 11th Nov '02, 12:07am But any other scumbag adventure site uses that kind of font just to look mystical and magical-well almost.
Its original, yes. But a cliché. Ok perhaps its not that bad. Just pompous. *lol*

Sniper Mon, 11th Nov '02, 12:19pm I was stuck between the second and last one ... I don't know :hmm: ... the second one seemed more ... authentic? more mysterious? mystical? magical? major use of alliteration there ... yep! That decides it! The second one!
Taluntain Mon, 11th Nov '02, 8:02pm I don't suppose any of you noticed that #2 is a really sloppy font with erroneous spacing between letters?
Mathetais Mon, 11th Nov '02, 8:11pm TAL ... I did notice that about #2, but I still liked it best.
However ... you are the Almighty Sorcerer ... so feel free to out-vote us for a more practical font.
Upon reflection #2 is sloppy and a bit clique ... but I like the "S" ;)
Taluntain Tue, 12th Nov '02, 7:24pm To be frank, I'm leaning towards #3. I'm a perfectionist and #2 just doesn't do it for me, being unpolished as it is...

Nobleman Thu, 14th Nov '02, 11:18pm Thank the maker! uhmm Quote C3P0
So the leftwing sweede got it right :xx:
Vince Clortho Thu, 14th Nov '02, 11:51pm Man, -anything- but the NWN script. It may be that I just haven't "gotten into it" yet, or don't have the information yet to feel okay about the old lawsuit (which broke the Black Isle/BioWare team) but for the time being, if I am reminded of the game every time I come to SP, it's going give me a bad feeling. I voted for #3, (third from the top), which appears to be the current font... does this really need to change?
Not that SP&CGM are exactly comparable... but judging from that publication's recent anorexia (owing a dearth of advert pages?), their cover change in June 2001--ironically, featuring Aribeth--was not so well recieved.
This is not a "grim warning" about font changes, just... I noticed which one is winning the poll and just felt that this position needed voicing.
I hope this doesn't make me unpopular here, as this is only my third or fourth post. Please let me know where I am wrong or if there are people out there who agree.
Nobleman Fri, 15th Nov '02, 3:42am Anyone agreeing? looks to me as there are currently 13 people who agree with you on number three. Yup thats what the poll says.
If people get mad at you, then its because they are afraid of a talking mushroom :1eye:
Just kiddin' welcome to the Taluntain the megabyte mage's Stronghold

Vince Clortho Fri, 15th Nov '02, 5:32am Heh heh. More specifically I was wondering about the dis-ease over #2, and even more specifically its relation to the lawsuit and break-up. If it was merely a font question, with no issues attached, and no semi-political opinions expressed, I wouldn'ta been so wary.
Thanks for the welcome BTW. Scared of a talking mushroom... HA! (He is pretty cool, isn't he?!) :D
Earl Grey Fri, 15th Nov '02, 12:06pm My vote went for #5. It's strict and good looking at the same time.
As the runner-up I'd pick #3 which brings a nice touch of calligraphy and it avoids falling into a fantasy cliché.
#2 is truly horrible. It looks very amateurish.
Tarol'azh, a.k.a.Tobias Fri, 29th Nov '02, 4:32am I guess I'm part of the majority here; I also can't wait for those random backgrounds, b/c it seems pretty creative on Tal's part.
Taluntain Fri, 29th Nov '02, 11:00am Oh, I totally forgot about this poll. Actually, this has been decided on already, the winner is #3. I've already made more than 20 random logos with it. ;)
I'm also making good progress on the redesign as a whole. Basically all I need to do now is convert 500+ html pages to it. Ouch...
Tarol'azh, a.k.a.Tobias Mon, 2nd Dec '02, 10:39pm p.s. Tal, is there anywhere you can download the NWN font? And while I'm looking for things, is there a script for the D&D Geeks skit?
Quint Mon, 2nd Dec '02, 11:43pm Numbers 1, 3 and 5 and a bit too plain, I think. Not enough spice nor magic. Number 2 is messy and not very legible, looks like a child has scribbled it. Number 4 is the one I like best.
Oops. Just read your post about choosing #3 already.. too late :)

Taluntain Tue, 3rd Dec '02, 11:30am NWN font is in the NWN/Misc subsection on SP.
Quint Wed, 4th Dec '02, 12:02am Actually now that I see you using it (It *is* #3 isn't it?) ... it looks quite nice!
Tarol'azh, a.k.a.Tobias Thu, 5th Dec '02, 10:41pm Thanks, Tal. I've been trying a bunch of different sites now, and...*sees everyone in library staring at him* ...oops, better shut my trap now.....
Edit-err, what NWN/Misc subsection :hmm: Please don't hurt me if you're getting frustrated from my incessant irksome queries!
[EDIT] Ohhhh :jawdrop: , the Miscellanea section in NWN! O.K., I thought it meant something else
