View Full Version : How do you pronounce your nick?
Death Rabbit Thu, 29th Apr '04, 1:22am We have a very international crowd here at SP. More than that, we have several members who choose a "fantasy" sounding name, usually after a book character, a PnP character, etc. But I wonder if we all pronounce each other's names in our mental speakers as they were originally intended.
I have a few theories about certain names here, and corrections are welcome if I'm wrong.
chevalier: I always read your name as "kev-a-LEER," but I've wondered if you're using the more traditional french pronunciation of "SHEV-ul-yay." What it izz, foo?
Uytuun: "OO-e-toon?" This one makes my brain itch every time.
Taluntain: "TAL-un-tane?" Looks pretty obvious, but you never know. Those kookie Slovanians can't be trusted... ;)
Aldeth TFI: I get the "deth" part, but is the A an "Aw" sound or an "Ay" sound?
So anyway, post your pronunciation, as you intend it, here. Even if your name is easy to pronounce, feel free to participate just for fun.
Ofelix Thu, 29th Apr '04, 1:51am Interresting, You know I tend to pronounce all nick I see in french because it is my native language and it is more natural to me to do so (Like chevalier as never been anything but SHEV-ul-yay because it is an actual french word knight)
So I think that everybody pronounce the nick as it will be pronounce and their native language. However if the nick are just not pronounciable using your own language then I supose they use english as it is the spoken language here.
But that's only a theory...
Anyway

Splunge Thu, 29th Apr '04, 2:36am Thank you, Det Rahbut, for taking attention away from the temporary insanity in another forum. :D
I am Splunj.
But "Sir" works just fine, too. :p :shake:
Edit: And I can't wait to hear the pronunciation of dmc or JSBB :D
Edit again: Oh...
dmc Thu, 29th Apr '04, 2:37am Errrrr..... Dee-Em-See
Faerus Stoneslammer Thu, 29th Apr '04, 3:20am FAY-russ or FAYR-us
STOHN-slam-err
It may seem simple...but err, well...it is. :hahaerr:
And Caleb, I'm glad to know that...I always thought of your name as "kay-lebb"
Next thing you know, JSBB's name'll actually be pronounced "Jissb"...or BTA'll be "Blackthorne ta (as in "Ta-ta!").
JSBB Thu, 29th Apr '04, 3:36am No, I'm afraid I'm just plain and simple Jay Ess Bee Bee. :p
Mystra's Chosen Thu, 29th Apr '04, 4:21am Mine is "Mai-Ster-Ah's Ko-Zeen"
Gotcha..
Aldeth the Foppish Idiot Thu, 29th Apr '04, 5:46am Ah, the simple pleasures in life - like when Death Rabbit goes Mr. T on us all. Cracks me up every single time.
My name is pronounced completely phonetically. Al Deth
"Al" pronounced just like the common American man's name - short for Albert.
And "the foppish idiot" part are all actual English words, so they can be looked up in the dictionary.
Rastor Thu, 29th Apr '04, 6:02am "Dr-OO C-AIR-ee"
Death Rabbit Thu, 29th Apr '04, 6:55am Oh yeah - by the way, my nick is pronounced "SECKS-muh-sheen." The D,e,a,t,h,R,a,b,b,i and t are silent.
Register Thu, 29th Apr '04, 7:27am @Faerus - I know, most do and it is the normal way as well, but since I have the nick, I set the rules of how it should be pronounced. :D
Xei Win Toh Thu, 29th Apr '04, 8:11am X-aye Win Toe. (or something)
Hacken Slash Thu, 29th Apr '04, 9:04am It's a little tough for people who don't handle some of the dialectics of the strange mixture of Navajo and Guamish...but it's actually pronounced..."Chandos the Red".
Weird, huh?
Taza Thu, 29th Apr '04, 11:30am I don't pronounce my nick, it's my nick. :p
My real name is close enough, and i use that in RL anyway.
@Ofelix
I know you say chev's nick right, as it wasn't just plain "chevalier" originally. But if chev wishes, he can clarify. I'm too lazy. :p
Meatdog Thu, 29th Apr '04, 1:32pm Well, mine is as simple as it gets: Meat - dog :p
Guess that wasn't so difficult, heh. But still thanks for letting me post a totally superfluous and useless explanation. :D
Wordplay Thu, 29th Apr '04, 1:38pm V-i-r-n-e. Easy as that, since in Finland, words are spoken like they are written.
Takara Thu, 29th Apr '04, 2:07pm mine's tak-are-ah. Or as i'd prefer (mas-ter) ;)
chevalier Thu, 29th Apr '04, 2:58pm @Aldeth: I have no idea where you got it from, but Aldeth is a mediaeval female name :D
As for my own nick, it's a common word, so it depends on how you normally maim your French.
dman18 Thu, 29th Apr '04, 3:16pm @Chev- heh, I always thought it was chev-a-leer...
@DR- LMAO! I never new man.
But as for mine, its simple from these 3 was to pronounce it: D-man, da-man, or as Slith calls me, Demon.
Edit: O yea, forgot i have the 18 on the BoM, so you can just add that or totally disregard it...
Djieff Thu, 29th Apr '04, 3:31pm Djee-EF (soft "j")
Eh, close enough...
Chevalier, didn't you used to be called "Chevalier-des-Trois-Tours"? If yes, why did you change? That name was awesome...
Faragon Thu, 29th Apr '04, 3:53pm Farahgohn, with the G sounding like the G in "got".
Faraaz Thu, 29th Apr '04, 4:32pm Fuh-RAA-Zzz
That's my real first name by the way... :spin:
8people Thu, 29th Apr '04, 4:53pm Eightpeople :p
not eight-people, there is no space. Capital 8 as it's a proper name as well :p
Uytuun Thu, 29th Apr '04, 5:45pm Uytuun=uytoon
u as in understand
y as in yellow
t as in trash
oo as in platoon
n as in nOOb
Mystery solved. :D
I've always pronounced chevalier de manière française...just doesn't seem like there is any other way..

Taluntain Thu, 29th Apr '04, 5:47pm It's supposed to be pronounced Tal-un-ten iirc.
Master of Nuhn Thu, 29th Apr '04, 8:09pm MUH-ster (Not MESS-ter) :p
of
NUHN (not noon, but with the U like in UNbelievable and UNdone)
Kitrax Thu, 29th Apr '04, 8:45pm Hmmm...Well Kit-Tracks works, but if you can't seem to get it right, "Kit" does just fine. :rolling:
Apeman Thu, 29th Apr '04, 10:22pm Ape as in monkey or primate
Man as in human or homo sapien
Can't get more easy ;)
Jaguar Thu, 29th Apr '04, 11:11pm JAG-WAR - A war like cat or stupid human who likes a certain car too much
chevalier Thu, 29th Apr '04, 11:27pm @Chev- heh, I always thought it was chev-a-leer...More like "shevalyeh", all vowels pronounced. Not like you can render French pronunciation using English sounds.
Chevalier, didn't you used to be called "Chevalier-des-Trois-Tours"? If yes, why did you change? That name was awesome...It was "chevalier des Trois-Tours". I changed the publicly displayed name because it was too long and because hardly anyone wrote it right (understandable - it's close to impossible to remember if you don't know any French). Well, and many people called me chevalier or chev, anyway.
I did have a long highschool nickname ;)
@Uytuun: I have always pronounced it like you say, but one never knows. Like that admiral de Ruyter guy... I avoid pronouncing anything Dutch or Flemish aloud at all costs unless I can blame someone else for it  ;)
Wiegraf Folles Thu, 29th Apr '04, 11:47pm why-graff fall-uz(short u, like in un-)
Ofelix Fri, 30th Apr '04, 12:09am chevalier de maniére français
Well, it is actualy de manière française
as manière is feminine so français is accorded with it, and you replaced the è with an é. But Beside that it was right.
BTW I'm not blaming you I'm just making you learn more.
I also though Chevalier des trois tours was beter than just Chevalier...
In english it will be ¨Knight of the three Tower¨
It took me a while to underdstand why people end up calling me ¨Offy¨ and then I just remembered the english sound of ¨e¨
Wildfire Fri, 30th Apr '04, 12:19am Tom-ah-to.
Oaz Fri, 30th Apr '04, 4:27am Awz.
Rallymama Fri, 30th Apr '04, 4:38am "Ma'am" will do just fine, thank you very much.
Falstaff Fri, 30th Apr '04, 4:41am "Oh Wise One" works for me.
teekc Fri, 30th Apr '04, 4:53am Wow, you guys read stuff. i remember people by their look (avatar and gems). Yes, changing gems do confuses me sometime. What is even worse, i remembered a green tree guy and suddenly he became a shady dark elf guy.
Even in real life i don't remember any person's name (sometime i even forget about myself). Near the end of every semester there is a lecturer evalutation sheet for every course, i always leave the "instructer" blank.
Benan Fri, 30th Apr '04, 5:54am Ben-an-tha-lin
Or just Ben if you will.
Meatdog Fri, 30th Apr '04, 10:24am Well, as we are in the teaching department, it's "Knight of the Three Towers", as since there are three, you need to use the plural, Offy. :D And besides, the y in your short nick has nothing to do with the e in your nick, it's just the most used termination of a shortened nick.
Ofelix Fri, 30th Apr '04, 1:43pm  now I don't look too bright do I? Thanks anyway I always want to learn more you can never learn enough!
The Kilted Crusader Fri, 30th Apr '04, 2:21pm Morningstar, pronounced "the kill-ted crew-sade-er" ;) :D
Rastor Fri, 30th Apr '04, 6:18pm I'm hearby claiming royalties for anyone posting things that are clearly not pronounciations for their nick.
All of you need to send a check for $500 U.S. to me.
Lazy Bonzo Fri, 30th Apr '04, 8:07pm LAY-ZEE BON-zO
or LBonzo = EL BON-zO
or LazyB = LAY-ZEE BEE
or LB = EL BEE
Elvenblade Sat, 1st May '04, 12:21am El-ven-blade
Easy huh?
SleepleSS Sat, 1st May '04, 10:26pm SleepleSS Just as Dani Screams it at the end of cradle of filths cover of the Anathema song with the same name.
Baezlebub Sun, 2nd May '04, 3:38pm Baye-Zell-Bub
Like the dodgey way of saying basil with a bub on the end.
Under no circumstances is it to be said Bee-Zell-Bub. This shall be met with quick retribution.
Frostbite Mon, 3rd May '04, 2:05pm Frostbite: Frost-bite. Nothing to it ;)
Frosty: Frost-EE
Blog Mon, 3rd May '04, 8:54pm One syllable in Blog. You can't go wrong.
Reading this makes me realize how I've been skimming over your names and hence screwing them up. Because I've been reading names as OH-LEE-FEX and LAY-DEE BOH-ZOH.
Lifemage Tue, 4th May '04, 2:38am If you can't say Lifemage...I will slap you upside the head.
Kam Tue, 4th May '04, 8:46am Kam. Three letters, one pronenciation. Kam. Sounds sort of like Cam. But with a K. Ooooooh. Aaaaaah. ;)
Rotku Tue, 4th May '04, 10:50am Rot-Ku. I think that's easy enough, infact I can't think of another way it could be pronounced... :hmm:
Nocturnal Nomad Tue, 4th May '04, 12:20pm Just call me Noc, you can't go wrong there.
Takara Tue, 4th May '04, 1:22pm @Rotku: It could be pronounced Wrote-Ku?
Vyndin Source Tue, 4th May '04, 2:18pm Vyndinn Soarss... Or something...
Interesting fact though. I made the whole name up :)
Aldeth the Foppish Idiot Tue, 4th May '04, 4:54pm @Aldeth: I have no idea where you got it from, but Aldeth is a mediaeval female name ??? How strange - I got in from BG1 - Aldeth is the guy you first meet in the Cloakwood forest and save from the druids, and then later meet him at the Consortium in Baldur's Gate and he gives you the +1/+3 bastard sword.
Takara Tue, 4th May '04, 5:04pm @Aldeth: I thought his name was Eldoth?
Edit: Aldeth Sashenster, my mistake. I was thinking of the other bloke.
chevalier Tue, 4th May '04, 11:30pm @Aldeth: Ealdgýð, Old English. Later, it evolved into Allday.
Sorvo Wed, 5th May '04, 12:26am If you can't get mine right, you need help. It's pronounced B-E-E-R :p
Ofelix Wed, 5th May '04, 1:58am @ Sorvo,
Why oh WHY on earth I am not surprised? :D :p
