View Full Version : Server RAM Upgrade Donation Call
Taluntain Sat, 8th May '04, 2:08am If you drop by around here regularly, you've probably noticed minor blackouts and slowdowns recently. Pages coming up dead or not found when you want to load them, but when you reload, they show... Basically, the server we're on can't handle all the load, so some processes are getting dropped, resulting in the aforementioned behaviour. I've done pretty much everything possible in the way of optimization, but it's just not enough. If it was only SP, it might work, but with the other hosted sites on, it didn't. Also, we'll need the extra RAM for the upcoming design, which is much more complex and resource-demanding than the current one.
So, as usual, I'm putting out a call for donations. Money collected here will benefit everyone, as it will directly improve load performance of SP and our hosted sites. So, if you can, please donate (http://www.sorcerers.net/helping_sp.htm) for the cause. The memory upgrade consists of a set-up fee ($30) and $20 every month (+tax). That makes it about $300 a year. I hope we can raise this amount in one go and then forget about it for a year.
Thanks!
P.S.
A call for donations has also been posted at RPGCodex, the other big site on the server. Donations coming from there will also be listed here.

Taluntain Sat, 8th May '04, 3:19pm Thanks to Harbourboy for the first donation! We now have $15.
Taluntain Sat, 8th May '04, 4:32pm Update: dipdipdip ($10) and Jecht $4. So altogether we now have $29!
Taluntain Sat, 8th May '04, 10:39pm Update: Splunge ($25), takara ($15) and Seayer $150 (!).
Thanks a lot for your donations! We now have $219 of the $300 needed!
Sarevok• Sun, 9th May '04, 12:29am If you make it possible to donate through Mastercard/Visa I would donate.
Splunge Sun, 9th May '04, 1:24am OK, so who else thinks that Seayer is really just Tal pretending to make these donations so that he can eventually buy his BMW (http://www.sorcerers.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=22;t=000075)? :p :D
Edit: @ Sarevok - PayPal accepts credit card payments. That's how I donate; it's easy, and I haven't had any problems.
Sarevok• Sun, 9th May '04, 1:33am I registered with them years ago but I hadn’t used them for ages and ages. I totally forgot the password and email address I used to register with, so I thought ok ill just re register but when I put my card in it says “that card is in use by another member” which is me but I can’t access that old account.
Splunge Sun, 9th May '04, 1:45am Log on with your old email address, and click on a field that says something like "Forgot Your Password?" (which I have had to do every time I donate :xx: ), and you should be OK to continue - just follow the instructions; PayPal will sent you further instructions (by email) on what to do next.
Edit: but if you don't know your old email address (as you suggest), I'm not sure what the next step should be.
Taluntain Sun, 9th May '04, 5:27pm You don't need to register with PayPal just to send a donation... try just using the PayPal button on SP like you're not a PayPal member or anything. It should work.
Sarevok• Sun, 9th May '04, 7:47pm Not when my card is already in use by a registered Pay Pal member that happens to be me but I can't use the account because I don't know the password/email.
Taluntain Sun, 9th May '04, 10:20pm Then just stick your donation in an envelope, wrapped in something so it can't be seen from the outside, and send it to me... problem solved.
Sarevok• Mon, 10th May '04, 12:05am Not a good idea
Taluntain Mon, 10th May '04, 12:14am No donations sent to me in that way ever got lost thus far (*knocks on wood*), so there's nothing wrong with the idea.
Taluntain Tue, 11th May '04, 11:50am An anonymous donor sent in $100 more today! Thanks to all of you who have donated, we have raised $319, which will cover the expenses of the RAM upgrade for a year, with a bit left over to pay for hosting and other costs.
Nizidramanii'yt Tue, 11th May '04, 10:22pm Splunge,
