When I try to start the chatroom, it tells me to download something, I click download, and I get some gibberish error message about not having the Microsoft Java Machine or something like that.
When I then click the link, I get forwarded to some microsoft page which tells it is obsolete and cannot be downloaded.
Whatever must I do???

Just click on "Get it now" on the top right of the page.

In the same vein, I try running the SP chat as well. Been trying for ages. What happens is the install dialog box pops up...I click yes...then it says "Status: SP_Visitor???" on top

And "Connecting..." at the bottom.

It stays like that for ages, then it says Unable to connect:null.

I use the LAN connection from Uni to access the Net, btw.

Can someone tell me what's going on?

Sounds like a firewall issue... maybe your network's blocking IRC access?

Try using mIRC (all the instructions are on SP).
