View Full Version : Board Upgrade
Taluntain Sun, 18th Jul '04, 6:42pm I decided to upgrade the boards again after all, since it'll still be some time before we can switch to vB. There aren't any major changes for users, though the Quick Reply box at the bottom of posts should be handy. I still need to do some tweaking to get the board back to what you're used to, so if anything doesn't look right just yet, give it a bit of time.
Spellbound Sun, 18th Jul '04, 7:20pm This little reply box is pretty cool! ;) Does it have a restriction as to the number of characters allowed?
Takara Sun, 18th Jul '04, 7:47pm It'll make it easier a fair bit. Sometimes I'd have two window open, so I could read the post I was replying to for reference. Dont have that worry now. Although the AoDA is going to get a real boost from this. ;)
Wordplay Sun, 18th Jul '04, 8:01pm Noticed only two things:
- New font in the front-page 'latest replies.'
- This box down here. :D
it'll still be some time before we can switch to vBTranslation: when pigs fly and it rains farking dogs and kittens. :shake:
Just one question: can't you change the 'quick-reply-box' background colour from white to something more fitting (like light-blue)? It sticks out a little.
Foradasthar Sun, 18th Jul '04, 8:24pm Please don't. We got enough pages already that defy find and custom settings with weird text background colors. For practical reasons, white is always the best base to write on. ;)
Taluntain Sun, 18th Jul '04, 8:24pm The font there's just bold. It bothered me before for some reason and I unbolded it, but I'll let it stay as it is now.
As for the quick reply box background / text colour, good question. It probably can be changed. I'll look into it when I have a few minutes. Anyway, I've reinstalled all the previously applied hacks now, so everything should be back to normal.
Hugo Sun, 18th Jul '04, 8:30pm This new back is good - it makes me happy.
Thank you Oh great sorcerer of sorcerers place :D
:borg:
NaeVa Sun, 18th Jul '04, 8:32pm /me bows to the great Taluntain.
Nice work, this.
Gothmog• Sun, 18th Jul '04, 8:51pm Aye, this is much easier. I wouldnt be suprised if we got more posts either because of it.
It lacks the standard smilies, URL, bold and other tools, but that's just a click away and most of us dont need it anyway, i'd think.
Good stuff :thumb:
Shrikant Sun, 18th Jul '04, 9:09pm I like this Quick Reply box.
It's a boon for guys like me who cant think past two mono-syll-ab-les.
Apeman Sun, 18th Jul '04, 9:39pm Yeah quick reply is a definate plus, hey I'm using it right now. Only thing left to do is to remember the more extravagant smilies ;)
Can anyone give an example link to vB? I've never heard of it neither have I seen it.
Harbourboy Sun, 18th Jul '04, 9:48pm Wow - quick reply can only accelerate the already formidable spamming powers of some SP members!
Taluntain Sun, 18th Jul '04, 10:24pm Btw, the change in urls on the boards you might have noticed is due to a new feature that will allow search engines to finally crawl the boards. Should bring in some extra visitors. ;)
chevalier Mon, 19th Jul '04, 1:32am I could swear I had seen some SP topics in search engines before...
Malovae Mon, 19th Jul '04, 2:21am Hmmmm, I don't like it. Doesn't seem right not having to click the reply link.
Shrikant Mon, 19th Jul '04, 8:23am Tal!
I had to edit one of my posts and found that you can't scroll down to see the previous posts on that thread.
However the 'Full Reply Form' retains this feature.
Why the multiple pages?
Rotku Mon, 19th Jul '04, 9:53am This quick reply thing is wonderful! Makes replying so much more easier than before. And this way I won't have to wait for my slow computer to load the reply page. Expect to see more posts from Rotku now :)
Mesmero Mon, 19th Jul '04, 11:14am I had to edit one of my posts and found that you can't scroll down to see the previous posts on that thread.
However the 'Full Reply Form' retains this feature. This has always been the case.
The quick reply thing is anoying; the bright colors attract too much attention in the dark color scheme of these boards. Oh well, I better get used to it. At least it saves a whole mouse click.
Aikanaro Mon, 19th Jul '04, 11:34am Hmm - not sure that I like this quick reply thing (however, I am using it :D ). If you can, please make it a nice blueish or otherwise dark colour.
Taluntain Mon, 19th Jul '04, 5:42pm Whine, whine, whine. How's this, then? ;)
Jaguar Mon, 19th Jul '04, 5:53pm It needs a dark outline now. But I like it good. Real good. :D
Wordplay Mon, 19th Jul '04, 6:10pm Better, but it still sticks out due of being grey. Try something bluish, like #6264A2 ;)
Takara Mon, 19th Jul '04, 6:15pm And who says SPers aren't demanding? sheesh :toofar:
Taluntain Mon, 19th Jul '04, 6:33pm It's supposed to stick out a bit, otherwise no one will notice it. And that's not bluish, that's vB purple (yuk).
I think I'll stick with black now. And it looks better with a bit of border, tested.
Hugo Mon, 19th Jul '04, 6:38pm Good good good!
This is goood - I like this a lot.
Thank you Taluntain!
:borg:
Takara Mon, 19th Jul '04, 6:38pm Nice. very nice. :D
Jaguar Mon, 19th Jul '04, 6:39pm That does look good. Tal, you've outdone yourself. :)
-Edit-
Oh yeah, 900 posts. Double celebration.
Taluntain Mon, 19th Jul '04, 6:54pm Check out the online/offline indicators next to the post time. ;)
Dalveen Mon, 19th Jul '04, 6:56pm Nice feature Talutain. :)
Taza Mon, 19th Jul '04, 7:50pm Hmm... gem system got mixed up or FAQ just out of date?
Also, i hate the quick reply box very much, good that i can turn it off. :p
The online/offline colors don't fit that well...
Shrikant Mon, 19th Jul '04, 8:24pm I like the black background for the quick reply box. Doesn't hurt the eyes.
Check out the online/offline indicators next to the post time. Nice touce Tal!
Might I suggest you retain the font and colour from the timeline next to it. It would look more harmonious.
And Im definately NOT turning the quick reply off
Taluntain Mon, 19th Jul '04, 9:53pm The online/offline indicators are temporary, I'll come up with something better when I have a few minutes. Though they're pretty good as they are.
Equester Mon, 19th Jul '04, 10:03pm I like the online/offline indicators, and the quick reply box is great, specially now when it's white on black. it somehow fits better.
Harbourboy Mon, 19th Jul '04, 10:09pm Yeah, the online / offline thing is cool. Hooray for new features!
Wordplay Tue, 20th Jul '04, 1:21am And who says SPers aren't demanding? sheeshNot 'demanding', but asking to 'keep up the level.' :D
Malovae Tue, 20th Jul '04, 3:45am Ok, I REALLY like the black box. Gray was horrid, but this fits. Please don't change it again Tal. Nice status feature as well :thumb:
Jaguar Tue, 20th Jul '04, 4:36am With all these great upgrades, Tal has to be rolling in the green. :money:
Blog Tue, 20th Jul '04, 4:52am Why do I see myself as offline even though I'm here browsing the boards?
Aikanaro Tue, 20th Jul '04, 8:16am Right - this is great :D
Earl Grey Tue, 20th Jul '04, 12:31pm Online/Offline is very good.
The quick reply box only has borders on the lower and right sides. I'd prefer a border on all four sides.
Sydax Tue, 20th Jul '04, 1:29pm I could swear I had seen some SP topics in search engines before...I got here for the first time with a search engine, and I remember my search words: BG2+mods; that's took me to this forum.
By the way, nice work with this little box, you know, there are people who has very slow connection (such as me) and this is very handy.

Taluntain Tue, 20th Jul '04, 1:46pm Blog, if you're logged in, you should show. Try refreshing the page. Also, you need to have Javascript enabled for this to work.
Earl Grey, the borders are on all sides, I can see them pretty clearly.
As for search engines, they crawled some pages before, but only a tiny fraction.
Earl Grey Tue, 20th Jul '04, 5:03pm @Taluntain
It's probably my monitor. It's too dark and I plan on getting a new one soon.
I can now vaguely see the upper and left border when I max the screen settings and squint real hard with my eyes. :)
Wordplay Tue, 20th Jul '04, 5:04pm Also, you need to have Javascript enabled for this to work Anyone remember the case Sun vs. Microsoft: using copyrighted material in IE? Guess what; most browsers do not have the more 'detailed' Java-script support anymore, it requiring separate installation from Sun. Have you thought of making the chat-rooms work in PHP? :hmm:
Errol Tue, 20th Jul '04, 6:09pm PHP Chatrooms are horrid. Period.
Edit: I think most of these features come built in with VBulletin I think it is, or if not that then phpBB which = free :)
Taluntain Tue, 20th Jul '04, 7:04pm Which doesn't help us any, considering there aren't any decent UBB importers for phpBB. And the only one I'm interested in switching to is vB anyway.
Hugo Tue, 20th Jul '04, 7:11pm Wow. SP is even cooler than it allready was - the online/offline thing, the Quickreply box - the new frontpage design. Kudos the Sorcerer man - spot on.
:thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
BTW one little question - just when is one defined as on- or offline?
:borg:
Ancient Galatan Tue, 20th Jul '04, 8:26pm Very nice, very nice indeed, thumbs up and continue the good work. :thumb: :hippy:
Taluntain Tue, 20th Jul '04, 10:32pm You are considered to be online when you are on the boards, logged in, and showing on the Recent Visitors page (users who choose to be hidden there are always shown as offline). Even after you leave the boards though, the online period lingers a bit, depending on the board setting.
Blog Thu, 22nd Jul '04, 11:36pm Ah, that's why. I chose to be hidden from the Recent Visitors Page.
Just noticed another cool feature: you could type half your reply in the quick reply, go into full reply mode and what you've written so far is still there!
Taluntain Thu, 22nd Jul '04, 11:45pm Yep, everything you write in the quick reply box is saved after you switch to the full reply form. Handy for when you remember you really need to add that posting icon.
