Would it be possible to add a button to quote a previous poster? It's a common option on many message boards.

TIA

Don't tell me with 900+ posts that you've never used the Full Reply Form?

It's a common option on many message boards. Isn't it already common on these Boards as well?

I believe he means that "quick-reply-with-quote" button found from vB and IPB. UBB does not seem to have it in the "usual" place next to profile, home, mail, and so on -or at least it didn't hit my eyes. :hmm:

Felinoid: Nope, never have. What's the point? I believe quick reply to be the best feature to ever hit message boards.

Wirhe: That's what I'm talking about. Those buttons quote the post in question, saving even more time.

I'm on dial-up, and any time saved is well worth it.

And because of those buttons, quoting is very often overused in many forums. IMHO, it's not necessary.

I thikn the quote featuer we have now does the job, with the one small exception of not indicating WHO it is you're quoting. As Mollusken pointed out, the quote feature is frequently mis-used. Posts here are quite long enough, thank you, without having someone quote a full post and forget to do appropriate snipping to get the 3 relevant lines.

Eeek, can you imagine the chaos that would result if we had Chev quoting Ragusa quoting Chev quoting Ragusa quoting...

It's disabled here on purpose. It makes people lazy, and instead of quoting the relevant segment of a post, they just push the "quote-all" button and repeat the whole post needlessly, clogging up threads and creating mountains of quoted text for no good reason. Quoting is meant to be selective. In the rare cases where you need to quote the whole post, it's not too hard to do it manually. As people have pointed out, the Fully Reply Form makes it much easier, and it's there to be used, so if you don't, you can blame no one but yourself.

But yes, even the regular quoting (tag insertion) with UBB isn't ideal (I like phpBB's start-close tag insertion much more), but this will change once vB is finally ready for us to switch to it.

As usual, I agree with Rally. When I first saw this thread that was what hit me. Posts so long I would never read them. It gets hard enough as it is.

Due to the way the Board is set up and Tal's rules we are not true spamers but intelligent and thoughtful ones. :good:

they just push the "quote-all" button and repeat the whole post needlesslyMan, I hate that. I like it the way it is.
You can type out your own quote-tags, paste the text, et voila! Easy as a piece of pie. And guess what, I did this all in Quick Reply.

Typing your own reply takes much longer than quoting someone, and we don't have any buttons for that either.

once vB is finally ready for us to switch to it.I'm almost tempted to ask "when", but I resist. Instead, why not select IPB? :D

Eeek, can you imagine the chaos that would result if we had Chev quoting Ragusa quoting Chev quoting Ragusa quoting... Rally, you have just expressed my dreadest nightmare. Oh, the horror... *shudders*

What is the use of quoting a full post when typing: "About Blah's post..." takes way shorter space, facilitating the reading of a thread?

Wirhe, once Jelsoft provides a full importer for UBB, which isn't going to happen until they overhaul their polling system. I wouldn't switch to IPB even if I could; I like vB much better. Anyway, end of off-topic discussion.

Talking about quotes, there is one little problem with full reply form. Quote always appears at the end of text, if you first write something, and than want to add a quote *before* that, it ignores cursor, and appears after your text. Slight nuisance, but sometimes can be irritating.

P.S. It is only slightly off-topic, so I hope Tal'll leave it here... ;) ...

Just type the following:

{quote} - Typedy type type type - or, copy-paste the important text to be quoted. - {/quote}

Only difference being instead of poky brackets {}, use the flat brackets []. I haven't used the full reply form since Tal put this feature in, so it'll save you plenty of time just typing it in manually. 15 extra key strokes ain't gonna give you carpal tunnel. ;)

And I agree - full quote blocks are incredibly obnoxious. I find the Obsidian forums almost unreadable, and those aren't as bad as most. The lack of those stupid buttons is just another sign of SP's quality. Kudos Tal.

Yeah, this is one of the many things that make SP a bearable place compared to some other Boards.
