Catbert and I have been tossing around this crazy idea of a SP NWN server, so we'd like to find out if any SP-ers would be interested in such a project. We haven't really planned anything concrete yet at this point, so this thread is simply here to determine if there are any people around here who would welcome the opportunity to play various NWN modules on a server under SP's tyrannical heel... err, I mean, loving embrace.

Can you explain a bit more what you mean by 'a SP NWN server' for slow people like me?

I think that could be lots of fun!....but only if it doesn't slow down the running of SP proper (i.e. sharing resources, heavy traffic, etc.) :p

Though I don't play NWN, I'm sure the SPers who do would be thrilled at the idea. Heck, it might even encourage me to get it if I knew there was a server restricted to SPers. And I hate MMORPGs (not to mention 3e rules).

That could be pretty sweet. I enjoyed the times I played on ALFA with SP people like Bel and Mat. Depending on the specifics I think it'd be loads of fun.

Sounds like fun - count me in :)

I don't usually play multi-player NWN, but would happily venture online with a regular crowd I knew.

Harbourboy, it'd basically mean that we would have total control over the specific server rules (i.e. who is allowed to play), game rules, and content. So we could basically make it into a semi-private playground for SP regulars and visitors, and we would make our own rules over what kind of playing we allow (cooperative, player vs. player, role-playing, actiony, etc.), and what we would be playing (NWN OC, SoU, fan-made modules, etc.).

In short, it'd mean SP would get a virtual meeting place where everyone with NWN could meet other people from SP and play together.

I'm a NWN modder. Can script, make hakpaks (can only make spell icons and 2da's myself though :p ), balance abilities and do most things that are possible with the toolset.

I might break down and get NWN. I have played a little MMORPGs but my limited experience is that people don't know what the word "team" means.

Playing with fellow SPer's should make a big difference.

Hmm... I'd been looking to test out my new Ninja concept-build; this could be the perfect opportunity! :D

Of course, I've only ever played single player games on the PC (but lots of multiplayer Halo on the XBox), so it'd be completely new for me, but it does sound like a cool idea. For one, it'd be interesting to see everyone's in-game personas: I guess Tal's a Sorcerer/RDD, and it's a no-brainer that chev's a Paladin... Hmm... Arifirh a PM/Necro type? And Felinoid... well, anything CN, obviously! :shake:

I don't really understand how multiplayer RPGs even work. As I always seem to be in a different timezone from everyone else, I'd probably never be able to play at the same time or my character would die when I wasn't there or something.

But I'm sure it would be popular with everyone else who knows what they're doing and live in the right timezone.

Oh, we've got people from all over the world, we'd all meet up eventually. Your character wouldn't be there while you weren't playing. ;)

We wouldn't run a persistent world (at least I think not), probably smaller modules that'd be restarted after every session.

Sounds great, but my windows of opportunity to participate properly would be limited and unpredictable so I'd be unlikely to end up making use of it. Still think it would be an excellent idea for those with enough time and the ability to say that you were going to be online at a certain time.

Hmmm...maybe I should get NWN. After playing through the game once or twice, I'd be willing to have a little SP multi-player action. :thumb: :rolling:

Depending on how it works, I might be dragged out of my cave to participate in this.

I'd be there with bells on and maybe a little light armor. I think it's a great idea.

Good idea, maybe i would even start to play that game again ;)

I've only just bought the game (and its expansions), so count me in!

I'd love joining in. I can't play online as much as I'd like, but I'd welcome the idea to play with fellow SPers.

EDIT: By the way, if anyone would like to join forces in any other server until SP takes off, give me a shout. I can only play in the evenings, GMT time, though.

Sounds good to me. Building is probably out of the question for time being since I'm occupied with two of my own campaigns for another NWN community. I might participate as a player though.

Well, considering the overwhelmingly positive response, I'll be looking into this. ;)

Hmm. I remember doing some scripting in NWN for myself and Erran, maybe it's time to re-install it. Could be fun.
What will we need? Both expansions and latest patch?

There is one thing to consider however. This sort of project needs a lot of initiative and organizing. I assume the goal would be to build an own module for this? That might be the best working option since finding a ready module which would fit into the community's purposes might be more difficult.

At some point, most likely... but for starters we'll just try out how it works with the OC, SoU, and some other modules. Work on other stuff can go in in the background until it's ready for public use.

OC and SoU don't work very well in multiplayer. The main problem being naturally the NPC based dialogue which just does not work in multiplayer at least in my opinion. Both are playable though if someone's actually intersted but with more than four players it becomes more or less impossible. HoTU is completely unplayable in multiplayer because of the scripting but I'm sure that is exactly why you left it out.

I'd rather the special module would be SoU and HotU inclusive. The expansions shouldn't be overly expensive at this point. Don't forget about the SP Amazon links. ;)

I agree, both addons bring lots of useful stuff for both builders and players. I would personally even recommend adding CEP since it comes with a lot of useful extra content.

Well, we've done some testings, and I've got good news and bad news. The good news is, there's no problem running either a Linux or a Windows dedicated server - we're tried them both successfully. The bad news is, the SP server can't take the extra load of large modules + a number of people playing them comfortably. We're already got too many sites on the server. So right now we're looking at our collective resources to see if we can come up with a decently fast and equipped box that could handle being our NWN server.

I'll post here when I have more news to share.
