View Full Version : Pronunciation of your nickname

Ofelix
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 4:43am
I recall in the days a similar topic but since many new faces came up I think it's high time to set the phonotical right for nickname!

Why do you ask? Many people came from non english countries and thus may have a foreing pronouciation to their nicks, so many Sp-er says it uncorrectly!

And call me strange but I just *love* linguistic and writing system, if I could I'd might my job.

I'll start with mine in IPA

Ofelix,[ ɔfeliks ]

I am not so sure about the IPA though I'm still pretty green to it... Let's just say the only letter that might cause problème is ''e'' as it is an french ''é'' not a english ''e''. ''é'' in English would be more or less a high pitch ''ay''.

Felinoid has a long e (like "feel") and a short i (like "in").

EDIT: And if you're in just the right mood, you can pronounce it Feel Annoyed; it's close enough, and it accurately depicts my effect on people. :shake:

As stated in this thread:

Old thread (http://www.sorcerers.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?/topic/18/548.html)

Errrrr..... Dee-Em-See

Celesialraven
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 6:37am
Cel-eS-tri-al Raven :) . Wait a minute... holy crap! I spelt it wrong on my login! My nick here is Celesialraven :( . Alright, well, the abomination that is my nickname is pronounced:
Celestrial raven...
Thats right, even though its spelt wrong, everyone is to imagine that there somehow exists a 'T' in there.

Rotku
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 7:04am
Rotku... pronouced Rot as in rot, then ku as in... something.

olimikrig
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 9:47am
Well, my nick is pronounced sortof like this

Olimikrig
[ooo-lí-mick-rric]

okay, the reason for so many o's is because you need to get a deep rolling sound on it.
The lí is sorta "cut off", and you need to lay preasure on the 'i' (one of the reason why I hate people refering to me as "olim", which sounds wrong compared to the way it's supposed to be pronounced).
Mick is straight forward, but the last "rig" you need to pronounce the 'g' as a 'c', but you need a special 'c', more like the 'c' in Mc-something.
This is why Kitrax calls me McRib (as the 'g' really is a typo, and was supposed to be a 'b' when I first created this account) I guess :p

Alavin
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 10:20am
Alavin
[A-la-vin]

Stress the initial A, and the rest is soft.

Cúchulainn
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 10:43am
Most people here would have great trouble with 'Anglacized' Irish names, so I won't even bother trying to explain the correct pronounciation for my traditional nickname.

Drugar
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 11:05am
[Dru-ger]

Simple, isn't it :D

Shell
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 11:09am
@ Cuchulainn
isn't it Cul - hul - lin?

Deathmage
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 11:18am
Death. Mage. :p

Also dee-emm, which is my current name in many places, including MSN.

Susipaisti
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 11:42am
Much as I like the idea of people scratching their heads, might as well try to explain it: Sooh-see-pice-tee, except all the vowels are supposed to be short and snappy.

Gladly this thread isn't about what the nicks actually mean...

Arifirh
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 1:24pm
[ærifiR], or Arriffeer.

And kudos to Ofelix for using the IPA :thumb:

Yours would be [ofeIliks] I think, from what you wrote in the last thread.

kuemper
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 2:57pm
(one of the reason why I hate people refering to me as "olim", which sounds wrong compared to the way it's supposed to be pronounced).:o /me apologizes and offers very shiny gems

I'll use your full nick from now on!

kuemper - kem(as in chemicals)-purr, though I will answer to: hey you; demon lady; eek!; and bugger, she found us again! :p

olimikrig
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 3:02pm
/me accepts Kuempers shinny gems.

You may refer to me as "oli" :p . The way I put up the lot, wasn't really that good either. but the "i" sounds special, so when pronouncing "olim" it sounds like I say "o-lime" :shake:

actualy I've been wondering. Does Kuemper mean anything (sorta sound like it does).

Enagonios
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 3:17pm
heh on a similar note it looks kinda weird when people shorten mine to enag, doesn't quite have a ring to it :p

Eh-nah-gohn-yos

if you can't be bothered to type the whole word a simple capital "E" will be sufficient ;) :D actually been thinking of changing it since there seems to be a trend..

olimikrig
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 3:24pm
the 'y' is it a [jos] or [y-os] :hmm:

I can see your point here. when speaking it out without the 'h' it could go with that shortening, however when first the 'h' has been applied, then it would sound rather odd :p

Felinoid
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 3:45pm
@olimikrig:
 Sorry. Your nick sounds better with the correct pronunciation, though.

On the same note, Fel sounds like "fell" instead of "feel", but I don't mind it at all, so y'all can keep using it. :)

olimikrig
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 4:01pm
 Sorry. Your nick sounds better with the correct pronunciation, though.yeah :heh: but my nick is a combination of the names of my two cousins combined with their surname.

Oliver + Mikkel + Riber

They were born a couple days before I first used this nick in Diablo2 (twins). And the pronunciation comes from how their names are ponounced in Danish ;)

Ofelix
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 4:16pm
Yours would be [ofeIliks] I think Isn't the french ''é'' Spelled 'e'' in IPA? No the first one is defenitively an open-mid ''o''. If not it'll be the french ''ô'' or close to the greek omega.

Laiwethel
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 5:01pm
*runs off screaming* No!! Too much IPA!

Heh, sorry. Had a few nightmares when I was doing my phonetics course.

Okay, so, Laiwethel...

[Lie-we-th-el], with the main stress on "Lai".

kuemper
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 5:06pm
kuemper doesn't mean anything...now that is very bad! No wonder I have low self-esteem! I mentioned elsewhere that I stole the name from a rival school.

It looks as though I'm pronouncing people's nicks correctly, with the exception of olimikrig.

8people
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 5:42pm
Eight People.

Guess any version of 8 could work though

As long as it has a little p!

Ofelix

Elwithral Irenicus
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 6:10pm
Mine is El-with-rawl.

Elwithrawl basically, except the correct spelling is minus the 'w'.

Irenicus is I-ren-i-cus.

chevalier
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 6:16pm
The French way.

The Magpie
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 6:24pm
@ 8people:
I always assumed (because of your tagline) that it was said "Infinite people". Oh well, just me over-complicating as usual.

Incidentally, the pronunciation of my nickname is not as straightforward as it may first appear. Let me explain:

The basis of the phonetics is a rare Westcountry dialect called Tubs' hill. Only known to local people, the spelling is completely disconnected from the traditional pronunciation. Thus, "The Magpie" is actually pronounced utterly differently, and carries many hidden meanings. I'll break down the phrase, for simplicity.

"The" is actually said "Awl-m" (like "orl-m", but softer).

"Mag" is said "Ay-TEE" (like IT). The "m" is operative, and thus silent. The "ag" represents "ite" normally, but the "m" changes this. Finally, the "pie" is very simply pronounced "wun" (or "ou-un", for Francophones). If you're having trouble, just say it quickly out loud. It'll soon come.

Please feel free to refer to me by the traditional, English equivalent of these phonetics. :p

olimikrig
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 8:29pm

Arabwel
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 9:13pm

Ofelix
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 9:22pm
*Ehm*, is it just *me* or are you all writing the pronouncation with weird boxes and such [pondering] [Roll Eyes]
Oh it's because your browser isn't set with IPA or Unicode or whatever the bloddy thing is to show IPA character.

olimikrig
Mon, 10th Oct '05, 11:19pm
 thank you for pointing out the obvious :shake:

Ofelix
Tue, 11th Oct '05, 1:01am

Undertaker
Tue, 11th Oct '05, 3:25pm
Just under-taker :p

Uytuun
Tue, 11th Oct '05, 4:06pm
HB, I'm not sure whether you're joking or not, but in case you're being serious:

No.

No i's or a's or oo's!!

If you must know, dl the soundclips here (http://static.unilang.org/resources/articles/art_dutchpronunciation.html) , open diphtongues and listen closely to to the third word from the end: "huis". Now forget about the h and the s and add "toon" as in cartoon and you'll be there. :shake:

The last but one and last word "buiten" and "ruit" have the same sound.

Thor
Tue, 11th Oct '05, 4:37pm
I guess mine's pretty obvious,
Thor like in, well, Thor!

Nakia
Tue, 11th Oct '05, 9:03pm
Na-KEY-ah or NA-key-ah or however you want to pronounce it since it is a typed name and not a voiced name. Has no meaning as far as I know. I just liked the way it looked.

T2Bruno
Wed, 12th Oct '05, 7:14pm
Tee-to-brew-no

Djieff
Wed, 12th Oct '05, 10:58pm
Like the letters G and F in English (gee-EF)

Kitrax
Thu, 13th Oct '05, 3:35am
Hmmm...

Mine is: Ki-Tra-K-s

The I is prounced like "pig"

And the rest is pronounced like the word "tracks"...as in train tracks.
All in all, you get Kitrax. :thumb: :rolling:

Rhyllian
Thu, 13th Oct '05, 4:16am
Mine's a Welsh & pretentious-fantasy mouthful, so an Anglicized Ril-ee-un (the Rhyll can sound like hill) will do nicely. Less glottal, and less spit-producing. :yum:

I dropped the de'Adjerah 'cause it's getting a mite long to type when I login. Vive la paresse!

Saber
Thu, 13th Oct '05, 4:37am
Ah, considering I changed my name, slightly, it is now: Saber. Pronounced: Say ber. Pretty easy, no?

It is like the sword, although that's not where i got the name from.

Uytuun
Thu, 13th Oct '05, 8:36pm
@Cúchulainn

After this morning's class on the Ulster Cycle, I'm pretty sure I can pronounce it correctly. (Professor with a lovely Irish accent.) :D

Disciple of The Watch
Mon, 17th Oct '05, 2:35am
Mine's pretty obvious. The New Order = De-Noo-Horrder. :D
