That makes me feel abit angry. How can we help, anyway? Teeny (Getting mad) Oblate Thu, 3rd Oct '02, 11:04am http://www.mertonai.org/amina/amina.asp Look at the end of the page. You can send a letter to the nigerian government. Contact a nearby Amnesty International group. You might think, writing a letter won't help. But letters from all Amnesty groups in the world are a lot of letters. ;) [ October 03, 2002, 12:10: Message edited by: Oblate ] Deathmage Thu, 3rd Oct '02, 11:20am Help if ye have humanity! (Feels sad) Nobody deserves to be killed by lots of stones and pebbles. Taluntain Thu, 3rd Oct '02, 1:07pm That site's outdated. The nigerian president pardoned everyone sentenced to stoning on the 43th anniversary of Nigeria's independence... I read it in the newspaper today. Master of Nuhn Thu, 3rd Oct '02, 2:17pm "All right, stone her... But let those who have never sinned, cast the first stones." Laches Thu, 3rd Oct '02, 3:02pm Tal, I believe that the sentence at the moment still stands. Either the newspaper was incorrect or there is a chance that perhaps the article was misread. Safiya Hussaini did have her sentence overturned since she was sentenced before the law went into effect. I'm not saying you are wrong, but the articles I read posted 1 hour ago indicate the sentence still stood. That was from a search on google I can't seem to link, but the world beauty paegeant ladies are talking boycott as of a few hours ago. [Edit -- he may have pardoned her, which would be welcome news, but I can't find that and as of a few hours ago the furor was growing so apparently others hadn't heard if true either. Here it is: http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&q=amina+lawal&btnG=Google+Search] The sites above allow you to petition your government to extend political pressure. [ October 03, 2002, 16:09: Message edited by: Laches ] Taluntain Thu, 3rd Oct '02, 7:45pm All of those sites are simply copying each other, repeating the same things over and over again. So I wouldn't be surprised if the actual pardoning would take them some time to notice. Laches Thu, 3rd Oct '02, 8:36pm Tal, perhaps so, but I hope noone who might consider taking the time to sign the petition would choose not to because there may be a pardon forthcoming. The petitions would exert political pressure on foreign governments (read U.S., Europe, Japan, etc.) to condemn the use of stoning and thereby perhaps prevent such cases from occurring in the future. And just in case there was a mistake in that paper, it couldn't hurt. FWIW, the New York Times reported on it today and indicated it was still a go, I'll cross my fingers though. Edit Oct 4 Perhaps this is what was meant. Reuters LAGOS - Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo gave assurances that the country's higher appeal courts would quash the death-by-stoning sentences for adultery passed by Islamic courts. Obasanjo said in a radio and television broadcast to mark Nigeria's 42nd independence anniversary that a 31-year-old mother, Amina Lawal Kurami, and a couple condemned to death by Muslim courts can launch appeals at the Supreme Court where they will be guaranteed justice.
