View Full Version : Staff of Magi's Protection from Evil
Maertyn Tue, 4th Sep '01, 5:42pm It's broke! Yes it is! I did a bit of testing and when I equip the staff and summon a fiend it attacks me! If I read a scroll of protection before or after summoning... everything works fine. Does the staff's protection only give those bonusses/penalties but doesn't protect from demons? I replaced my sorcerer's "Friends" by "Prot. from Evil" with SK, I chose friends because the staff would give me unlimited protection (I thought!).
Anyone approve?
Extremist Tue, 4th Sep '01, 5:49pm It is a bug. It was never fixed in official patch.
The staff displays the message, adds symbol on your portrait and cycle colors - but you are NOT protected!
You must cast Protection from Evil on your mage no matter visual issues.
[EDIT]
I just now spotted that you abuse some :-X util.
And I noted it in my black book.
Yes, up there I said about common bug that occurs in everyone's game. But pal, the bugs you'll get from that :-X util noone will be able to confirm - NOT EVEN BIOWARE!

Maertyn Tue, 4th Sep '01, 5:55pm Thanks a lot, Extremist!
I've just found a patch: http://members.home.net/mrkevvy/SoAfix/FixedBG2StaffOfTheMagi.zip
Now I'll have to re-replace PFE. Or not. I didn't use friends THAT often (charisma already at 18 - as should a sorcerer have).
[EDIT]
I just now spotted that edited you post.
And I noted it here.
Yes, up there I asked about common bug that occurs in everyone's game. But Extremist, my spell planning was done before testing and how should I get that PFE in my spellbook now? I can't do it - NOT EVEN BIOWARE!
;)

Auger Tue, 4th Sep '01, 6:19pm I personally have mixed feelings about using SK for Sorcerer's spell mistakes. In my mind, if we're dumb enough to pick the wrong spell, our character would likely be dumb enough too.
The only time I could see doing it is for those sorry people (myself included) who didn't understand the Soc class well enough to avoid picking Find Familiar! :(
As for the Staff of Magi - it's a bug.

Extremist Tue, 4th Sep '01, 6:20pm Excuse me pal, if you WERE planning how come you knew the effect of that Stuff?
It is not in the manual. Like spells.
You have obviously read it somewhere before, haven't you? But obviously THAT place (site) does not warn you on the bug. But it warns you to download and use :-X util, ain't it?
And yet, when you saw it is screwed, why couldn't you get one decent cleric to your party for aid (Viccy of course)?
But no, you choosed the only way you could, the damned :-X UTIL.
For me, posting anything more in this thread is over. For you, I wish you to have a nice day!
Maertyn Tue, 4th Sep '01, 7:00pm I found a Staff-patch (link is above). Now everything is O.K. I made a backup of my sorcerer before ":-X"ing. I'll have Friends in my spellbook again. Everyone is happy. I think I'll cast "Friends" right now and hope it does its job - Extremist, sorry.
Gonzago Tue, 4th Sep '01, 7:49pm Yeah, it's hardly roleplaying if you say, 'Well, I should go with vocalize and protection from evil, but I have this sneaking suspicion that fairly soon I'm going to kill this lich and all his friends who'll give me a cool staff that will render my spell selection redundant. And maybe I'll meet a guild leader with a nifty amulet, and won't need vocalize anymore...'
Of course, Extremist, I happen to *know* that you bump down your pc's charisma on creation...apparently one of your pc's bhaalspawn attributes is telling the future. ('I just know I'm gonna kill this gnome...I just know it.') ;)
Maertyn Wed, 5th Sep '01, 2:22am On a funny sidenote: Layenne or whatever's her name wields the Staff and gates a demon in. Result? She cries out: "Die, Maertyn, die! My fiend shall take you to hell!" Then she grabs her staff and points into my direction (not that she was intelligent enough to use the lightning/fireball-combo). What happens: The fiend turns to her "This is for you, child of foolishness! You dare wielding the cursed staff of non-protection, DO YOU!!!" And in the end she may manage killing her demon but not me, I equip the staff and install the patch. Muahahahahaaa.
