View Full Version : Sponge Bob Square Pants straight or fei?
Ox Mon, 24th Jan '05, 11:23pm Religious people from the far right in America have accused Sponge Bob Square Pants of being a 'Gay' supporter.
What do you Think?
I won't be offended by any answer you give.

Blackthorne TA Mon, 24th Jan '05, 11:33pm I Think that this has nothing to do with US politics, so it does not belong in this forum.
I Think that this has nothing to do with serious discussion, so it doesn't belong in the AoDA either.
I Think that this really doesn't merit any discussion whatsoever.
I Think that I will close this thread! :D
Blackthorne TA Tue, 25th Jan '05, 5:54pm Seems that this topic wasn't as silly as I originally thought it was.
Here is an article that explains better what I believe Ox was trying to get at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4190699.stm
Looks pretty  to me...
Sorry for the misunderstanding Ox!
Cúchulainn Tue, 25th Jan '05, 6:08pm This reminds me of the 'burt and ernie' scandal from a few years back!
Is being homosexual really such a threat to socitey? Just because someone is gay it does not mean it is a nasty disease that will eventually consume mankind!
I also read that there was a 'Church of Spongebob' in New York.
Nakia Tue, 25th Jan '05, 6:09pm I saw this last week and was tempted to post it. However I do think it is pretty silly. On a par with the Teletubby controversy.
Ox Tue, 25th Jan '05, 6:47pm Thank you Blackthorne TA for your reconsideration of my post.
I am a Sponge Bob Square Pants fan myself.
Thank you Cesard, I will Google 'Church of {the} Sponge Bob'
Thank you Nakia Nightshadow, I think this controversy points to just how serious the conservitive religious right peril is in America; ie. ''...James Dobson, founder of right-wing Christian group Focus on the Family, singled out SpongeBob at a black-tie dinner in Washington... ''

Hugo Tue, 25th Jan '05, 6:50pm Stoo-pid extremists... I am glad for SP, otherwise, I'd *really* think by now that every single American has his or her head so far up their ass, a kick in the butt might break their spines.
I mean, FFS, it's SPONGEBOB - it's funny. It's not per sé gay. Pretty soon, there'll be reverse gender segregation, where people are no longer allowed to get along with others of their gender, because it's too gay.
*sigh* Stupids
:borg:
Ragusa Tue, 25th Jan '05, 6:51pm  Hehe, more of that, please!
joacqin Tue, 25th Jan '05, 7:18pm Wasnt there a big ruckus about the purple Teletubby as well? The disturbing thing is that these people may be fringegroups but they have a lot of clout in society. They scream really loud and most often results come more from loud screaming than large numbers.
Ox Tue, 25th Jan '05, 8:28pm I'm afraid 'these people' of which Joacqin refers aren't really fringe groups at all; but that they're really the spear tip of the conservitive religious movement (christian) in America today. ie. Pat Robertson, Jerry Fallwell, and like types you can see on main stream Tv and cable here in the USA.
They talk about 'Tolerance' : meaning others had better tolerate them. . .
They talk about 'Morals' : meaning their morals. . .
They talk about the 'Moral Majority' : meaning they ain't kidding. ie. millions (and I do mean millions) of normal people consider themselves to be a part of this group.
Despite the ''promise of America'' I believe America remains one of the least Tolerant and most Policed states in the world today.
Sponge Bob Square Pants is a sense of humor about being free I think.

Master of Nuhn Wed, 26th Jan '05, 12:34am Some people can take trouble out of anything. They'd probably say that the black clothing of Goths is sinister and focussed on death, meanwhile they dress in black clothing when they go to church.
These people (not generalizing) see wrongs in anything because they're focussed too much on it.
999 Games is 666 games if you turn it upside down.
Settlers of Catan could also be pronounced as Satan. Yeah! And if you read my name (Thijs, actually meaning 'Gift from God') from the back to the front you get sjihT. Now what does that sound like? Pfft.
Ox Wed, 26th Jan '05, 12:56am MoN,
you make me Laugh out Loud ! :D
great comment !

Master of Nuhn Wed, 26th Jan '05, 1:02am Well, Thanks! :)
Don't get me wrong, though. I'm a christian, too. And I probably might share some of their opinions. This is just a bit farfetched and... silly.
Ox Wed, 26th Jan '05, 1:41am MoN,
may I quote you? . . .
''...This is just a bit farfetched and... silly.''
probably what they said before the good people of Salem started to arrest, torture, convict and burn ''witches'' at the stake; in their quaint new-found-land . . .

oh, and Post Script:
isn't the US even now using state sanctioned torture; against the shadowy terrorists of the 3d world? That thought alone may deserve its own thread . . .
Gnarfflinger Wed, 26th Jan '05, 8:45am From BlackthorneTA:
I Think that this has nothing to do with serious discussionProbably right, and wouldn't have been brought up if someone hadn't gone looking to stir up trouble, but the Anti-Gay lobby is looking for scapegoats. If you're the least bit different, then run for the hills...
Carcaroth Wed, 26th Jan '05, 11:30am WAFF spokesman Mark Barondeso told the newspaper that anyone who thought the video promoted homosexuality "needs to visit their doctor and get their medication increased". Sounds reasonable.

The Great Snook Wed, 26th Jan '05, 4:14pm In the Snook household we all love the show. Little Snook is a disciple of Patrick. The Mrs. loves Squidwird and myself I like Mr. Crab.
Chalk this one up to people see what they want to see.
Ox Wed, 26th Jan '05, 4:31pm The Great Snook,
Nice to meet another fan of the Sponge Bob Square Pants.
Myself and Chick Flickity both adore this animated series.
I am standing by . . . :D
Master of Nuhn Thu, 27th Jan '05, 12:28pm I don't understand all that's been said.
What is OD? What is 'their junk'? What have you seen at a revival? What's the deal with the 'quaint new-found-land'?
I bet you're a fine old man, Ox, but I'm not familiar with the way you speak. I'm Dutch and half your age. Could you make these things clear? I'd like to share my thoughts on this matter. :)
Ox Thu, 27th Jan '05, 1:47pm Master of Nuhn,
FYI-
OD = overdose (too much medication)
junk = American english slang for heroine ( I used it here to imply a dependence upon being led by their clergy, preacher, evangelicalist, etc.)
revivals = I've been to few; generally their about mass hypnosis, giving a stirring show, and collecting as much free (un taxed) money as possible.
quaint new-found-land = [a play on words with Newfoundland Canada] meaning the settlers who ran from Europe for freedom really ran here (US) to impose their own theocracy. . .
I am looking forward to holidays in Arnhem. :)
Master of Nuhn Thu, 27th Jan '05, 3:11pm Well, I think I understand what you mean now, I guess, and I would like to argue about some things, but I'd rather stick to the topic here.
Calling SpongeBob SquarPants a gay-promotor is not a smart thing. Burning witches is not a smart thing. Crusading to free the Holy City is not a smart thing. Selling slaves with the bible in the hand is not a smart thing.
But I see no wrong in a live with the church, reading your Bible every day, praying every day, listening to your reverend etc. That is the lifestyle of many religious people. And there's nothing wrong with it.
There are religious people who depend too much on their clergy etc and IMO that's not a good thing. My reverend teaches me things, but he can't order me to believe it. He's a teacher, not a master.
There's a lot more I could say, but I'm already off-topic.
Send me a PM or start a new thread if you like to know my opinion on the rest. ;)
Ox Thu, 27th Jan '05, 3:34pm PM sent. . .
Sponge Bog is good fun
:)
Cúchulainn Thu, 27th Jan '05, 4:00pm I have never seen that show, but if anything this controversy will give Mr Square Pants some free advertising!
Ox Thu, 27th Jan '05, 4:21pm Cesard,
N.Ireland may be ''spongified''; if it is, you may become a fan if you enjoy animation at all.
I visited Belfast in the early 70's. I loved your countrys' emerald green colors.
Sponge Bob is good fun :D
Yirimyah Fri, 28th Jan '05, 12:09am They scream really loud and most often results come more from loud screaming than large numbers."If you can't win by reason, go for volume" -Bill Watterson, Calvin and Hobbes
Ox Fri, 28th Jan '05, 2:02am Yirimyah,
you've covered both sides of the spectrum, LOUD with small numbers; and unreasonable with large numbers.
I don't understand what you're trying to say by using these two quotes.
...
Sponge Bob is great good fun
:p

Gnarfflinger Fri, 28th Jan '05, 6:05am Exactly, it's meant as entertainment. It's a shame that there has to be these accusations, when the same thing is overtly displayed on Prime time television and syndicated reruns without the same hellfire and Brimstone from the religeous right...
Ox Fri, 28th Jan '05, 4:49pm Gnarfflinger,
agreed.
Sponge Bob is great good fun
:)
Enagonios Sun, 6th Feb '05, 3:29pm It's a hell of a lot better than Ren and Stimpy, that's for sure :D
Gnarfflinger Mon, 7th Feb '05, 5:27am Ren and Stimpy had the occasional funny bit, but most of it didn't make sense when you were sober...
Master of Nuhn Tue, 8th Feb '05, 12:58am "Cow and Chicken" and "Spongebob Squarepants" are 2 of the funniest cartoons I've seen and I won't let people destroy the magic unless they come with a GOOD argument.

then scroll down to Delusions of grandeur at "Focus on the Family" the SpongeBobgate affair here
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6210240/
"We see the video as an insidious means by which the organisation is manipulating and potentially brainwashing kids," Paul Batura, a spokesman for Focus on the Family, told the New York Times.
Dobson would be a loone if he were a bird . . .
SpongeBob Square Pants loves Patrick
Ravynn Thu, 10th Feb '05, 9:04pm I personally don't watch Spongebob solely because his voice makes me want to drive big forks through my brain, but I think the show is otherwise funny. As to being gay, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I laugh. But seriously, don't you SEE what those E-VILLL liberals are doing to our children?? Teaching acceptance and tolerance?! GASP! How DARE they? Don't they understand that tolerance makes us weak and susceptible to Satan and terrorism and it will be the end of society as we know it? We'll have to start treating people who live different lives as equals. Nonononono. This is unacceptable. I say we go back to the old days and burn people at the stake again, only use people like Dobson as tinder. These people remind me of the guy that wrote the Cats are evil demon spawn thing that was the subject of another forum earlier this week or last. Anyway, I guess I will end up moving to New Zealand and just let this country burn. And good riddance, I say. $(*@#^& arch right wing ^&#$%*#S!
Carcaroth Fri, 11th Feb '05, 2:03pm Spongebob even made it into the Metro (Free Paper) this morning.
