View Full Version : Best singers
casey Wed, 31st Mar '04, 4:09pm Inspired by the best guitar solo, who in your opinions are the best singers out there? it doesn't matter if they are Punk, Metal, Classic, main vocal, back up or whatever else you want.
With the few real singers I've ever listened to in recent (past 2-3 years) times I'd have to say Scott Stapp from Creed "with arms wide open" and Chester Bennington from Linkin Park, his song "My December" in particular was great.
"This is my December
This is my time of the year
This is my December
This is all so clear
This is my December
This is my snow covered home
This is my December
This is me alone"
But I will probably change my mind as soon as I listen to other singers later on
Register Wed, 31st Mar '04, 4:12pm Gotta be Johan Antilla from the band 'Radioaktiva Räker.' Guess you never heard of him, right? Well, he did a short solo career as well.
casey Wed, 31st Mar '04, 4:57pm No I have not.
Also Lars(?) from Metallica seems to be a very good singer or was in "The unforgiven" at least. I like Metallica in general but some of it's a but too angsty, and dark/depressing for me, but "The unforgiven" didn't sound like it was aimed solely at my age group (17)
they dedicate their lives
to running all of his
he tries to please them all
this bitter man he is
throughout his life the same
he's battled constantly
this fight he cannot win
a tired man they see no longer cares
the old man then prepares
to die regretfully
that old man here is me
Or maybe I've just misinterpreted the meaning *shrugs*
Xei Win Toh Wed, 31st Mar '04, 5:04pm This is likely biased, and according only to my tastes as of right now.
Female: Kaisa Jouhki (Battlelore).
Male: Marco Hietala (Tarot).
Lady Luthien Wed, 31st Mar '04, 5:36pm Right now, I think the best voice would be Norah Jones...
And for the guys', I like John Linnell :heh:

Register Wed, 31st Mar '04, 9:22pm @Casey - The reason you have not is because it is a swedish band that sings swedish songs only. Heh, the only one I know on this board that know who the 'Radioaktiva Räker' is is RooK.
Mesmero Wed, 31st Mar '04, 10:00pm Freddie Mercury. He just had an amazing voice.
Sarevok• Wed, 31st Mar '04, 10:11pm Chris Rea/Sting/Phil Lynott

Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmsteen)
Quite a range of styles (all under the metal umbrella though), and quite a range of technical ability too
Dendri Wed, 31st Mar '04, 10:55pm Björk.
For such a frail person she has a great and powerful voice which can take you on a journey - if you let it happen. Saw her live here and there. Almost peed in my pants with joy and awe. Special creature she is. :rolling:
Sarevok• Wed, 31st Mar '04, 11:21pm I really can’t stand her music or her voice, I don’t know what it is but Bjorks stuff has to be the worst music I have ever heard in my life, but that’s just me.
Dendri Wed, 31st Mar '04, 11:28pm  ;) :D
Love her or hate her.
For most people there is nothing in between those two choices with Björk. I can understand that, but I surely adore her. She is the ****ing goddess.
david w Wed, 31st Mar '04, 11:32pm Kylie Minogue.
Tassadar Wed, 31st Mar '04, 11:39pm I have to agree with Mesmero, Freddie Mercury reigns supreme.
Currently I'd pick Dan Swano (Edge of Sanity) and Mike Akerfeldt (Opeth). You'll get the full range from these two, clean, to screeching black and brutal death. Thom Yorke (Radiohead) and Maynard James Keenan (Tool) would have to be up there as well.
Female: Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil).
fade Thu, 1st Apr '04, 12:17am I forget his name but the lead singer to System of a Down is pretty good.
Aikanaro Thu, 1st Apr '04, 11:10am Sharon den Adell from Within Temptation (though I would like to listen to some more of After Forever and Nightwish's stuff).
I've become rather fixated on female vocals lately.
david w Thu, 1st Apr '04, 1:27pm How come 90% of the singers here are ones I've never even heard of? Either I've got to get out more or...
Well, I probably just need to get out more. :(
Alavin Thu, 1st Apr '04, 8:41pm :) I've not heard of 90% of them either.
Ian Watkins of Lostprophets has a very distinctive voice.
Matt Bellamy of Muse (who I go on about often as my role model) has a fantastic singing voice.
Celebir Fri, 2nd Apr '04, 2:41pm Dream theater, a Euro band which I borrowed from a friend has an absolutly kickass singer , and they also have some of the best drumming I have ever heard in recent times. I also think that Scott Stapp could probably do metal if he wanted to, he has a very good voice.
TheBlackRose Fri, 2nd Apr '04, 3:05pm 1. Sting
2. Freddie Mercury
3. whosiwhatsit from Coldplay (Martin?)
4. Ondrasik from Five for Fighting has a nice voice as well, but I wouldn't put him quite on the level of the above three.
5. Phil Collins - I enjoy his rasp

Anyone like the singer on their first album? I think he has a really good voice, but he's not James...
Sniper Sat, 3rd Apr '04, 3:36pm Freddie Mercury is in my opinion the best singer ... well was :(
Currently though, I'd say that the singer from AFI is pretty solid
Harbourboy Mon, 5th Apr '04, 7:50pm David W - I haven't heard of 90% of them either.
