Sarevok Anchev posted this in the last thread:

That rapid tongue brings out my evil eye
So, here we are now, it's like a curse

But don't you start no fight

It has been a while so here is a clue.

It is a reggae tune from the 80s. The artist used to live in a place called Electric Avenue.

I'm going to take a stab at the artist only because of the Electric Avenue hint - Eddy Grant. No idea on the song, though.

Your mama don't dance, and your daddy don't rock & roll.

Loggins & Messina. Later Poison. Eh?

- edit - I'm pretty sure I'm right, so here we go...

"I was there through the ages
chained slaves to their cages
I have seen you eat your own
I'm the cycle of pain of a thousand-year-old reign

I'm suicide and salvation
the omen to nations
that you worship on all fours
I'm the infection and famine
that's knocking at your door

[chorus]

I am the incubus
I lay the egg in you
the worm that burrows through your brain

but you are the beast
who calls me by my name

I send your children to wars
to serve bastards and whores
so now you know
you created me on the day that you were born

[chorus]

I lay you down to sleep
your soul to keep
better cross your heart before you die
and now you know, know that you are mine"

Ummm....it's an 80's song, and the artist who sings it was in a group at the time, has since gone solo and become rather infamous for his non-musical activities. It's not Michael Jackson.

Another lyric:

"Somebody tell me
why I work so hard for you"

Djieff
Fri, 21st May '04, 10:04pm
I'll take a wild guess and say George Michael, "I want your sex". I't a shot in the dark, really.

Splunge
Fri, 21st May '04, 10:25pm
I'll see your shot in the dark and raise you a wild guess of my own:

Because D.R. said the singer was in a band at the time, I'll say Wham, and since the only Wham song I can think of is the totally wretched "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go", I'll go with that.

Djieff
Fri, 21st May '04, 10:42pm
the artist who sings it was in a group at the time Damn, I guess I just read too fast and missed that vital piece of info. :o

I don't know any other Wham! songs, so I fold...

Takara

Wham did freedom, but I've no idea about other songs.

Death Rabbit
Sat, 22nd May '04, 2:33am
Yes, the band is "Wham!", George Michael sang "Freedom" after he went solo, and the song is neither "I want your sex" or "Wake me up before you go-go." That kind of rhymed. :heh:

Shall I give up the title and provide another song lyric so we can move on, or do you guys still want to try it? It shouldn't be too hard, it was one of Wham's biggest hits (next to the irritating "Go-Go" song, of course).

Hacken Slash

I hate to correct you DR, but freedom was a big Wham hit. It came out in 1984.

Death Rabbit
Sat, 22nd May '04, 9:12am
I thought you were referring to "Freedom '90," which GM did in fact release as a solo artist. I must admit I'm not familiar with the Wham! version of Freedom, and never knew there was one. Perhaps the "90" version is a remix?

Takara
Sat, 22nd May '04, 9:42am

Live a life of solitude
'Till we find ourselves a partner

Mesmero

No! Not Marvin Gaye
I think Creedence Clearwater Revival was first with the song, and their 10 minute version (although Marvin Gaye's version wasn't bad either) was just magnificent.

Splunge
Sat, 29th May '04, 5:37pm
I just did a Google search.

It was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong.

From what I could figure out, Gladys Knight and the Pips were the first to have it in the charts in 1967. Marvin Gaye made it famous in 1968. CCR did their version in 1976.

So, assuming the above is correct, I guess we're both right, Mesmero, but it's your call. Are you going to let my answer (and subsequent lyrics) stand, or do you want to post again, since I didn't actually wait for your response before I posted my new lyrics?

Mesmero
Sun, 30th May '04, 12:13am
You gave a correct answer and your lyrics should stand, and after all, Marvin Gaye became most famous with the song.

I must admit that I always thought CCR was first, but you are correct, Marvin Gaye had an album with the same name in 1968, and CCR didn't publish it until 1970 on 'Cosmo's Factory'.

This is actually pretty disturbing as I always tried to convince people it isn't a Marvin Gaye song. Oh well, CCR's version is still the better in my opinion :)

Faerus, you're not allowed to invoke the IJ rule in this case. We're following the same rules as the Quote Game, where the 24 hour IJ rule can only be used if someone doesn't post lyrics when it's their turn to do so, or if someone makes a guess and is not confirmed correct or incorrect within 24 hours.

Here, we have to wait for Sarevok to post a hint or new lyrics. But her better hurry. :p

The group's music is somewhere in between Swing Out Sister and a downtempo Matt Bianco, with a little Sade thrown in. Sort of coffee-table soul and smooth jazz band and kind'a hesitant to work . The title is the same as one of Stevie Wonder's song. By the way, it's a late 90's song and when they recorded this song, they were Britons and Aussie.

Alright, some hints:

The song of this band which became popular was released in 1997. These lyrics may be a bit more familiar (though strangely enough, no one I talk to seems to remember this song, no matter how obsessive we all were over it at the time ;) )
And the band is not obscure :D

She dreams a champagne dream
Stawberry surprise, pink linen and white paper
Lavender and cream
Fields of butterflies, reality escapes her
She says that love is for fools who fall behind
And I'm somewhere between
I never really know
A killer from a savior
'Til I break at the bend

Sorry, I have realized that it is probably pretty obscure.... but it was late and I just choose a song off the album I had playing at the time... since I appear to have killed the game for so long I'll give a rather obvious hint.

Uriah Heep is indeed the band. As for the song, here some more lyrics and if nobody find them in the next couple of hours, you can post new lyrics.

Splunge, "Sweet Freedom" is the title of the LP, the title of the song is "Pilgrim".

As for yours, it's "This flight tonight" by Nazareth but I have the impression that Nazareth's version must be a cover and the original belongs to someone else.

This artist was a bit like a late 80s version of Britney Spears with hits from 1986-1990 but instead of getting sleazier as she got older she ended up fading into the safety of relative obscurity.

Next lines:

"And if I can't find my way
And salvation seems worlds away"

80's britney spears? All I can think of is Tiffany, or Debbie Gibson. As for song, I've no idea.

"I don't mind not knowing what I headed for.
You can take me to the skies.
It's like being lost in heaven.
When I'm (insert name of song here"

For some obscure reason I'm *sure* that song's title is "Lost in your eyes" or something along those lines. I even have the freakin' melody in my head. But damn if I remember who sings it.

I can't remember the rules to this game but to avoid confusion, the 'prize' will go to the first person to correctly name the song title and the artist together.

This should be a softball:

Working hard to get my fill,
everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anything to roll the dice,
just one more time

Something of 'Journey' but I can't seem to put my finger on it. Blast it my first song I know and I don't know which one exactly.

One good softball deserves another:

I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the 'Frisco bay
'Cause I've had nothing to live for
And look like nothin's gonna come my way
