So, starting off from the end of TQG3:

"The strict lord Death bids them dance."

Hint: Probably the most famous appearance of Death in cinema (and no, this does not involve Bill and Ted...)

(@Tal: as no-one had started this thread, and as JSBB had passed the torch to me, I thought I should start it off...)

JSBB

I should know this one but for some reason I am drawing a blank on the title. I have the feeling that I am going to :bang: when I hear the answer.

Anyway, here are the rules as they currently stand.

Someone posts a quote from a movie (no TV shows, music, etc). If you know the movie it came from, and post the answer correctly, then and ONLY then may you post a quote of your own. Unless you're 100% sure you're correct, don't post a quote of your own until you are confirmed correct by the original quoter.

If it's your turn, you must respond with a new quote within 1 day (24 hours) to keep the thread going. Otherwise the thread may be hijacked by the next available impatient jackass.

If the person who's quote you've responded to does not confirm that you are correct within 24 hours of your answer, you are then assumed correct by default, provided no one else chimes in with the correct answer within that time or disputes your answer.

Using a search engine to find the quote is not allowed. The fun of the game is based on our love of useless movie trivia, and thus using a search engine to look up quotes you don't already know is cheating.

After you have posted your answer, feel free to use a search engine to confirm that you are correct but please do not post an answer if you have found it via a search engine. If you do not know an answer and decide to use a search engine to look it up for your own interest/amusement, please do not post the answer here. Obviously there is no way to monitor this so we will rely upon the honour system.

You are correct Aldazar. It was indeed Almost Famous.

Is your quote from the Green Mile? It sounds like Tom Hanks talking.

Any hints forthcoming DR?

Death Rabbit
Thu, 20th May '04, 3:46pm
Sure. It's an independant movie (hence the difficulty) starring John Cryer (you may know him as "Ducky" from "Pretty in Pink.") The movie is set in New York, has an area of New York City in the title, and the title is longer than average.

If you need another hint, let me know.

JSBB
Thu, 20th May '04, 9:42pm
If you need another hint, let me know To tell you the truth I doubt it would help as I suspect that the last clue would give it away for people who have seen/know anything about the film.

I was tempted to ask for another hint but then I figured that I probably had never heard of the film so I looked it up on IMDB.

I suspect that you have a stumper but I have been proven wrong before.

The Great Snook

I also cheated and looked up the movie. I find it interesting that there are no memorable quotes for the movie listed at IMDB. I then asked a client who owns a video store and he said he has never heard of the movie either.

Congratulations DR you may have been the only person to see this particular movie (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0157182/) .

I'm not sure what the rules are, but I'm pretty sure as a cheater I do not get to post the next quote.

Aldazar
Fri, 21st May '04, 3:56am
Never seen it either, and having checked out that link to IMDB I'm out too. Actually, I've never even heard of it before and have really only heard of 2 other stars on the cast list.

And here, I thought I'd seen most of Jon Cryer's work.

Death Rabbit
Fri, 21st May '04, 4:33am
The movie is called "Went to Coney Island on a Mission from God...Be Back by 5." It's a movie about 2 childhood friends who hear rumors that another childhood friend, whom they haven't heard from in years, has been seen wandering around Coney Island, homeless and muttering strange things. They decide to go find him and rehash a lot of old personal demons along the way. The "Mission from God" part is a code word they used to use in school, whenever one wanted the other to ditch class for something really important. It's a pretty decent movie as indies go, one I rented one weekend a few years back when I was bored and in the mood for something indipendent and artsy. Art school does that to ya.

Don't worry fellas...I won't gloat. MUCH! :D

@ Nizidramanii'yt (however the hell you pronounce it)

Apparantly you don't understand the rules of the Quote Game. You don't just post random quotes for fun, it's an actual game with rules. One of which being that you can't post a quote unless you successfully guess the currently posted quote. And you certainly don't follow the quote up with the title of the movie it came from (that kind of kills the whole "guessing game" thing we have going on here). Please follow that format in the future.

For more clarification, the rules of the Quote Game are posted in the first post of every Quote Game thread. Scroll up and read JSBB's first post above.

As such, my quote still stands and needs answering, if you (or anyone) knows it.

NAY! I'll give another hint, because we're running out of Farrelly Brothers movies. ;)

One of the two stars of this movie is more famous for appearing with another actor, rather than the one he appeared with in this starring role. The OTHER actor became famous by playing a victimized gay sketch artist (in a comedy).

Hint #3: Though funny as hell, it's one of the more poorly perfoming films by the Farrelly's, box-office-wise.

Yes, Jaguar's Dad is indeed correct, the quote if from Eliminators. (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/eliminators/) I found this review after I posted the quote, it gives you a pretty good idea of the total cheesefest that the film is. They even include sound clips including one of the quote that I posted.

Oh and as for it sounding like a bad comic book, here is another quote from the film

"What is this anyway, some kind of God damn comic book? We got robots, we got cavemen, we got kung fu!" ;)

Jaguar
Fri, 25th Jun '04, 6:58pm
Well, credit where credit is due. My dad wanted me to post one of mine:

Nun: You don't believe in God because of Alice in Wonderland?
Loki: No, "Through the Looking Glass." That poem, "The Walrus and the Carpenter," that's an indictment of organized religion. The walrus, with his girth and his good nature, he obviously represents either Buddha, or...or with his tusk, the Hindu elephant god, Lord Ganesha. That takes care of your Eastern religions. Now the carpenter, which is an obvious reference to Jesus Christ, who was raised a carpenter's son, he represents the Western religions. Now in the poem, what do they do...what do they do? They...they dupe all these oysters into following them and then proceed to shuck and devour the helpless creatures en masse. I don't know what that says to you, but to me it says that following these faiths based on mythological figures ensure the destruction of one's inner being. Organized religion destroys who we are by inhibiting our actions...by inhibiting our decisions, out of...out of fear of some...some intangible parent figure who...who shakes a finger at us from thousands of years ago and says...and says, "Do it-do it and I'll ****in' spank you!"

I guess I will give you another quote from the film to see if that jogs your memory. The line is said by the same character as the first quote and the actor who played the "human trash" was Robbie Coltrane.

"Every time a piece of human trash is put under a rock pile the world becomes a better place!"

Baezlebub

Well, going off vague hints, and considering I haven't seen the movie for a long, long while... Nuns on the Run?

JSBB
Sun, 11th Jul '04, 12:56am
It is not a Steven Segal film and is not Nuns on the Run.

The actor who said the two quotes is very well known for playing one character and pretty well has done nothing else decent in terms of normal acting. However, he does has a very successful career in voice acting.

In one of the film's more amusing scenes, Ben Kingsley plays a Gandhi like character who loses his faith after his village of pacifists is attacked and he has been mortally wounded by being crushed by a millstone.

Harbourboy
Sun, 11th Jul '04, 1:24am
Doesn't ring any bells with me, sorry. I think you must have been right when you said earlier it was an obscure one.

it wouldn't be a film with mark hamil would it?

Harbourboy
Sun, 11th Jul '04, 2:16am
If so, that settles it. Anything with Mark Hammill in it that isn't Star Wars is going to be undeniably 'obscure'.

JSBB
Sun, 11th Jul '04, 5:33am
:tie: Mark Hamill did indeed play the role. It is actually quite amusing to see him sporting a beard instead of the clean cut Luke Skywalker look. :tie:

Jaguar
Sun, 11th Jul '04, 6:21am
Well, the only movie besides the Star Wars that I've heard of him being in (haven't actually seen the movie) would be Walking Across Egypt. Don't know if there are anymore, so...

Walking Across Egypt, final answer.

I am hoping that Aldazar has seen it. I will wait until tomorrow to see if he can guess it with the clues that have been posted over the week end. Otherwise I will rule the quote as unguessable and post a more softballish one.

Aldazar
Mon, 12th Jul '04, 4:47am
Well, the only movie that comes to mind with Ben Kingsley and Mark Hamill in it is Slipstream, so even thought that doesn't ring quite right with me in regards to the quotes posted, that's my guess.

Still, it just doesn't seem right. Anyway, I know I'm gonna beat myself up when I see the right answer.

Harbourboy
Mon, 12th Jul '04, 4:50am
Why did JSBB think Aldazar had seen it? Is he some sort of Mark Hamill groupie or something?

I've looked up Slipstream and it does look like it would be the answer as it also has Robbie Coltrane, although I'm still amazed that more than one person has seen it.

Takara
Mon, 12th Jul '04, 10:05am
I saw slipstream, but found it sadly disappointing. Nice to see Hamill taking a different sort of role though.

JSBB

It is from Slipstream, as to why I thought the Aldazar might have seen it

That's ringing so many bells in my head that I'm near deaf, I can hear it so clearly but can't place it!

Aldazar
Tue, 13th Jul '04, 6:36am
That's what puzzled me, I've seen it, but not for a long time. It just rings bells for me from God-alone-knows-where I guess. Maybe it is from Slipstream that I remember it, but it seems I've heard it more recently. Maybe I saw Slipstream again recently without noticing it.

Anyway, enough :yot:

another clue a commercial from the film

"Are you fat? When you go jogging, do you leave potholes? When you make love, do you have to give directions? At the zoo, do the elephants throw you peanuts? Do you look at a menu and say 'OK!'?"

also the crazed teacher in the movie was played by a famous standup comic who wore a beret and a trenchcoat and screamed a lot. Sadly he died in a tragic car accident after this film.

JSBB

I don't think it would have been a dead giveaway....given that I have not even HEARD of that movie! Well, it is around 25 years old so that rather limits the number of people here who would have seen it. On the other hand, I have posted quotes from 70 year old films and they were guessed pretty quickly.

I think that the "I like to watch" quote would have clued me in to the film but I don't know if I would have remembered the title. It has been a long time since I saw it.
