It's currently the #1 movie in America, but when it's competing with the Princess Diaries 2, that ain't sayin much. Color me the skeptical monkey.

Have you seen it? Is it good? Worth seeing? What the dilly?

Bare in mind that I'm a HUGE fan of all Aliens movies (yes, all of them), both Predator movies, and the video games (even though AvP2 is too scary to play...I'm a big wussy).

Every review I have read and every forum that has this topic have something in common: it sucks. Bad. I heard it is so bad that if you saw it you can consider yourself robbed and raped from your "Bad Movie" -virginity. :D

Seriously; #1 movie? Poor bastards. :shake:

I heard it is so bad that if you saw it you can consider yourself robbed and raped from your "Bad Movie" -virginity. If there is such thing as a "bad movie virginity," then I must be a dirty, dirty ***** indeed. I've seen so many bad movies, I make Paris Hilton look like a nun. No, my movie chastity belt was shattered long ago.

Still, I may go see it this week, even if some think it's bad. I'm trying to get a consensus opinion here. The number 1 movie, even on a slow week, can't be THAT bad. I realize that it's mainly due to the nerd army turning out in droves, but still.

I liked it. The usual formula of compensating for weak character and plot development with kick-*** action applies here. And, yes, the action is worth checking out imho.

A-vault gave it a 4/5 and I trust A-vault. I'm going to see it. Would have prefered a movie based on the game setting rather than some ice cavern (IIRC).

And, yes, the action is worth checking outThen you won't be having trouble finding "good" movies. Myself, I cannot stand them longer than it takes me to walk out from the theater.

Then you won't be having trouble finding "good" movies. Being an Aliens and Predators thing, including the Queen, definitely helps, which was what brought me into the theater to begin with. :p

Kinda :yot: but I watched Predator 2 on TV a couple of weeks ago and only then realised that until AVP was made, the only actor (AFAIK) to appear in a film with each beast was Bill Paxton.

That said, I'll get back on topic by saying that I'm such a fan of both creatures that I'm going to see it regardless. I do love mindless action fun.

I've heard it's appallingly bad and that even the action scenes are no good with the lighting so dark that you can't see what's going on.

It is only the number one movie because it is August and there are seldom any big blockbusters released in the USA in August. Plus, movie like this have an in-built fanbase that all turn out on opening night. It's takings tanked 25% from Friday to Saturday which is a really bad sign. These stats suggest that it will sink without a trace within the next two weeks.

Watch out for more dodgy August releases next week with the arrival of such potential gems as "Exorcist: The Beginning" and "Without a Paddle"

I heard that the studio didn't give copies to movie reviewers in advance of the release date. That's usually not a good indication of a studio's opinion of the quality of a film.

...Which doesn't matter a jack if they already have a big fan-base to abuse, like in this case. It will sell like mad in any case. :shake:

Sadly, I remember several recent examples from both gaming and movie world: Thief 3, Doom 3, MtG: Battlegrounds, Counter-Strike: CZ, Terminator 3 (game and movie), Street Fighter, Star Trek, Star Wars, and of course AvP. They all sell only because they are continuums to some "legendary" serie or another. If Counter-Strike were made to be a movie, it would suck but still make it profitable for the companies.

If they made a Baldur's Gate movie we'd probably all be out on opening night, even if it was terrible. So there's no incentive for them to spend any making it good.

There's plenty of incentive to make a movie like that good. The Spiderman movies were guaranteed to break even thanks to the loyal fanbase. They broke box-office records because they were damn good movies that stayed faithful to the source material while pleasing the mainstream crowds. Ditto with X-Men, the first two Batmans, Resident Evil, etc. The movies that just broke even were Daredevil, The Hulk, Godzilla, etc. - and they sucked major ass. Point is, name recognition and a built-in fanbase will only prevent an all-out financial disaster, but it takes a good script, good story and good acting to make them classics and/or a viable new series.

PS - that's exactly why so many comic book/video game/classic remake movies have been and shall be churned out this decade: they're a relatively safe bet with booku money making potential. Hell, even Mortal Kombat: Annihilation made a small profit, and that's 2 hours of my life I'll NEVER get back.

Good point. Except 'Resident Evil' which was unwatchable.

Really? Huh. I kinda liked it. I was pleasantly surprised by it, myself. The sequal looks disappointing, but I may be surprised again. We'll see.

@ Harbourboy

Well, there is that one D&D movie -you might want to content to that (and it is said to be crap to boot). ;)

The Dungeons & Dragons movie most certainly IS crap. The only other person I know who's seen it only liked it because Thora Birch was in it.

i found the librarian/mage hotter. hehe. and yes, the movie sucked eggs. the "rod of red dragon control" or some such nonsense... yerg. IMO seeing the librarian was the only thing that made that movie tolerable. still wasn't enjoyable though.

@Aldazar
was the elf in the movie intended to be drow? bec. although she didnt have white hair, she had dark skin.

Well...I've heard from one of my friends, that its a mindless action flick, rather than a profound horror thriller classic...so...if you like mindless action flicks, I suppose its an easy choice.

Edit: Woo Hoo...new gem!! :D :D :D

I liked it. A lttle short, no plot, but kick arse action sequences.

Saw it.

Mindless action flick, weak story, hot chick, impressive visuals, solid action, quasi-unbelieveable plot, bad acting from the Italian "ooh aren't I smooth, sexy and smart" guy, very underdeveloped story.

I liked it! :D

Not all movies have to be Citizen Cane to be enjoyable. Anyone who bashes this movie so mercilessly takes their movie watching (and themselves) way too seriously. I wasn't expecting much, and saw some decent action in a familiar theme. Sure, it wasn't the best movie I've ever seen, but hey - who cares. It was interesting enough to see in the theater. I won't be buying the DVD though.

Bottom line: If you're a Predator and/or Aliens fan, it's a nice - albeit short - bit of popcorn-munchin' goodness. Just don't expect the AVP equivilant of LotR and you'll have a good time.

I agree with DR the dnd movie was enjoyable, maybe if I had something better to compair it to I would think differently, but oh well.

Just saw it yesterday and while there's minimal plot and the film is a little short, it's enjoyable from an action-film standpoint. Some incosistencies when relating it to the Alien films but on the whole it's quite good. I would have enjoyed it more had there been no human involvement though. Nice ending too, it'd be good to see them do a sequel sometime in the not-too-distant future.

As good as the first three Alien movies? No. As good as the Predator movies? Not quite. Better then Alien Ressurection? Heck yeah!

Yes it's short on a lot of things: plot, character development, lighting, running time, but it's still a fun movie to see. Maybe a DVD to buy. Maybe.

p.s. Yes I know that saying it was better then Resurection isn't saying much. A lobotomized retarded wombat could make a better movie then Resurection.

One of my rules of thumb for buying games is:
If it's made from a movie and I havent seen it reviewed, its probably really crap.

This is a movie made from a series of games made from two series of movies. Plot, anyone?

I get my action scenes from games.

Actually, I'd say AvP was at least as good as Predator 2. But then, I hated Predator 2--that scene in the beginning with the gangsters and cops having a shootout annoyed me no end.

AvP, now...mindless? Yep. Plotless? Yep. 2D characters? Yep. A good film? Nope.

Entertaining? Damn right it was. At the very least I'll be checking out the director's cut DVD, as well--word is a full 30 minutes of footage was cut to drop the rating from R to PG-13. Should be fun.

Considering the huge potential a Predator-Alien movie has I was so dissapointed. Not nearly enough AP battles. And if they hired such un-charismatic actors, why use them at all? I would have loved to see a no-human, no dialogue movie. Challenging for the writers/director, but could be quite refreshing.

I like your thinking on the no-human, no dialogue movie idea notforyou. But i ahve to say, yes, AvP was pretty poor. Especially the acting, and the plot, if there was one!!!

Don't check on it.

If you have any bit of a Predator / Alien geek in you, do *NOT* go and see it.

I can't spoil here, but it doesn't only feature a bad script and directing (enough so to make it obvious no Director's Cut on DVD can make it good enough), it actually contradicts with several important points about the Predator and Alien universes, attempting to change the lore and features of those races to far worse direction.

I expected little of this movie, and found out I should have expected a LOT instead. A lot of negative things.

Short put, it manages to take the best, most intelligently constructed, most immersive sci-fi horror genres ever played on screen and mold them into a shallow, childish entertainment suitable for families with simpleminded children. Featuring unrealistic action, no horror to speak of, a plot so filled with clichés I've never seen a worse serious attempt before, and a horrible soundtrack I'm glad I don't remember, this clip would be better forgotten altogether.

I so hope that no-one making another movie or series or books or another form of lore about the aliens and the predator will ever, ever consider anything offered in this movie the least bit acceptable.

There are few movies I've ever said something like this about in my life. And of those few, this is the worst I've seen relative to what it should have been, even with expectations lower than usual. I would like to be glad that they made a new predator movie for such a long while, and AvP games and comics have been something I've loved for years. But the fact is this movie was not made for fans at all, it was in no way loyal to what the genres are like. Instead they took a genre so hardcore that no mass-audience would ever care about it anyway, and then proceeded with trying to make it a brainless effect-show enough to try and bring it to the mainstream audience. And as such, they failed to deliver to the only group that could ever be interested in the movie to begin with: the fans of the genre. What happened, was that they took the classical middleroad that caters to no-one, and now they have in their hands a total flop that will probably be the reason for why we fans won't see another predator / avp movie for at least another 5-10 years, if ever.

I've never had a more empty feeling while walking out of a movie. There was no entertainment, no fun, nothing. The only good thing about the movie was the first 5 minutes. After that it was like staring at an ugly wall, and then wondering where your money and all that waiting went.

I think I'm still going to check it out. Aliens kind of went downhill anyway since Alien 3. And predator was always a bit of a joke. Should be light entertainment.
