View Full Version : POLL: Is Khalid any use?
Vermillion Wed, 26th Jul '00, 11:20pm The Rules:
yes/no answer with reason(s) and no references to any other specific NPC in the game.
My answer: no he ain't
My reasons:
1: In my opinion, he has an irritating and whiney personality.
2: His low strength and constitution compared to other potential party members makes him an inferior fighter, and fighters should be melee specialists, not ranged combat specialists.
3: He always, and I do mean always go for the stupidest routes to places, usally involving leaving the rest of the party and finding a very large group of monsters.
4: There are better archers as well, even specialising Khalid with the bow he only gets increased range, not increased damage or chance to hit.(Same for all characters)
Jarron Wed, 26th Jul '00, 11:44pm Nuff Said!!!!!
The Fat Egg Thu, 27th Jul '00, 1:18am He is good because:
1. He is the second best with a bow, (Kivan is THE best and better than Khalid.)
2. He comes with a long bow, which is useful in the beginning.
3. He has the skills to use it.
4. You can upgrade his weapon proficiencies 3 times in the game.
5. He has good range, with a bow, sling or crossbow. (Although he's best with a bow.)
6. He has some of the highest HP of any NPC in the whole game.
7. He can inflict 20-35 damage with a two-handed sword+2.
8. You get him in the beginning.
9. If used and equiped correctly I've seen upwards of 50 damage inflicted!
10.He's not nearly as annoying as a certain other character you like!
Now that is 'nuff said!!!!!
Vermillion Thu, 27th Jul '00, 3:25am Um...Quick aside from the opinion poll here to reply to the fat egg,
what is equipped correctly to do about 50 pts. of damage with a bow?#
and as for your 10th comment, it does look like yer in the minority after I read through some earlier postings.
Wingfoot Thu, 27th Jul '00, 4:12am Khalid is pretty weak in melee combat. if you want a good long ranged/melee fighter, go w/ Kivan. his Str is above 18, an he has a good Dex. unlike Khalid, he has a low Con, i believe a 14, but get the tome in the flesh golem cave. i killed Khalid off every time i accepted that duo, even my 1st time through.
opps i didnt follow the rules.

The Fat Egg Thu, 27th Jul '00, 7:56pm 50 damage was used to prove a point, its obvious that's impossibe. He can inflict in reality about 25 points of damage.
hooligan_inc Thu, 27th Jul '00, 8:45pm He is no use at all because:
1. He is annoying.
2. He gives out the "Gorion would be proud of you" line too much.
3. He can't get anywhere the short way
4. He gets stuck in doorways
5. Anyone can use a sodding bow.
6. All the decent fighter gear costs bloody loads.
Gunthar Sat, 29th Jul '00, 4:08am Khalid sucks for several reasons:
1. Annoying personality
2. Low strength - He can only carry 120 pounds, practicaly not even the armour on his back. He doesn't get any hit bonuses or damage bonuses.
3. Way better archers - If you want an archer, go for Minsc or Kivan.
Superbish Sat, 5th Aug '00, 8:20pm I love Khalid! He's got a sort of... Innocence to him. He enjoyed my high-reputation party, so I enjoyed him. He did his share of the slaughter, too. I think he had about a third of the kills in my party by the time I sent him packing. This in a party where I'd pair him with Minsc, then use my main character to do the majority of damage. You could understand his lack of fortitude, though. He had to put that Jaheira his whole life! The only reason I kept her around was for Khalid, until I needed the space.
Vermillion Sat, 5th Aug '00, 9:01pm And what's wrong with a fighter who can cast healing spell's, summon animals to help fight and blow things up with lightning, and has a cool sound set.
hooligan_inc Sat, 5th Aug '00, 10:49pm Khalid has no innocence to him. Jaheira could, as I have mentioned in previous posts, Kick his arse. And Jaheira rocks, but she isn't really worth taking if you yourself are playing as a druid. But I suppose that applys to Clerics, Mages and Bards as well
Jarron Sat, 5th Aug '00, 11:16pm Death to Khalid. He is horrible. He sucks in combat compared to others you can get later on. Yeah, he's good at first simply because he's available. But as soon as Minsc becomes available why keep him. Plus he is always the first to run away if a battles not going good.
Vermillion Sun, 6th Aug '00, 9:16pm Two things;
One, I forgot about about the whiners cowardice crimes,
And two, Jahera HAS kicked his arse several times now.
Sapiryl Tue, 8th Aug '00, 3:57pm On top of it all, you can just get that Druid in the Cloakwood, so you can ditch both Khalid, "Cities are so oppressive, so many people" and Jeheira, "Blast it Khalid! You die and you'll never hear the end of it!" They both belong on the end of Hull's long sword.
Javalar Tue, 8th Aug '00, 11:24pm Just give him the gauntlets of ogre power, and he turns into your best fighter. Awesome CON and good strength, plus specialization of any weapon of your choice,
just turn off the sound and he's great.
Cheers
Vermillion Wed, 9th Aug '00, 12:31am Or alternativly, get rid of Khalid to, say a hobgoblin, and get yourself a proper fighter (one that doesn't need gauntlets of strength) and give the gauntlets to a mage or thief so that they're doing deacent melee damage when they need to. Just an idea that works for any AD&D party, on or off computer.
Oh, and you don't even get a chance to get the gauntlets of ogre strength until chapter 5, way too late in the game for him to have a respectable strength score, you've already found at least 4 or 5 other people who can take his place!

Vermillion Fri, 11th Aug '00, 1:37am In BG pairs can't, or at least aren't supposed to be, split up and yet in BG2 Jaheira is there and able to join the party, but Khalid is nowhere in sight. Maybe it's just an oversight, maybe I've heard the wrong info, maybe even the developers thought he was useless too...
hooligan_inc Sat, 12th Aug '00, 7:50pm Give the sodding gauntlets to any fighter and they rock serious holy bells, but Khalid actually NEEDS them.
Vermillion Sun, 13th Aug '00, 6:07pm Yes but most fighters have strength close enough to 18/00 that they don't need 'em, give to a different class and kick Khalid out the party.
Nightal Wed, 16th Aug '00, 1:29pm Fat egg you dumb sucker Coran is the best archer, shame on you
Vermillion Thu, 17th Aug '00, 6:07am Oh dear, first Khalid now Kivan, at least I'll help you defend Edwin if need be Eggman.
I don't really have an opinion on the Coran/Kivan thing, but then my fighters are archers second, melee death walls first. Kivan is an elf though and has a cool pictue and I like elves in AD&D.
