Faye said:
A terrorist bomb is set off in a restaurant. The people in the restaurant (not bombed) continue on, apethetic of the victims. And gave this hint:
In the restaurant bombed, one character mentions to the protagonist why doesnt he do anything about the bombings. He casually remarks that it is his lunch hour.... and that its not his department.Minority Report?

Seems to me we need another hint....

Faye
Tue, 9th May '06, 5:34pm
The movie is quite old. >10 years old.

T2Bruno
Tue, 9th May '06, 8:38pm
Greater than 10 years old as 'quite old.' :geezer:

Bah! 'Quite old' means movies with Cary Grant or Katherine Hepburn or Buster Keaton. :geezer: Harrumph!

Faye
Tue, 9th May '06, 9:13pm
I kept it ambiguous for obvious reasons, but fine, the movie is release in the 80s. Its almost as old as me, and relatively, thats pretty old. I also consider any movie before the 90s as quite old.

Wed, 10th May '06, 3:59am
I don't think this is right, but I never saw the sequal.

Top Secret?

Faye
Wed, 10th May '06, 4:17pm
Ok, last clue before I finally pass the torch to someone else.

The protagonist fell in love with a suspected terrorist and later has himself promoted to the department that IS in charge of the terrorist bombings just to find out more information about her.

I'm unfortunately no good with movies with John Wayne. :(

T2Bruno
Fri, 12th May '06, 9:46pm
You got that right, Pilgrim.

Trivia: John Wayne is often imitated with using the term 'pilgrim' -- it comes from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

Your turn DS.

Well. since it seems to be so hard I'll give it away, via a cryptic clue, hehe. The title of this film is the same as a reasonably well known chinese book.

T2Bruno
Fri, 19th May '06, 3:23pm
The Art of War (the book was by Sun Tzu)

That is from the hint only -- I never saw the movie, only know a movie with that title came out in the past few years.

It was indeed. Shame you never saw it, I love it to bits.

The obvious - King Ralph?

Enagonios

I don't imagine that anyone else has seen this turkey yet so I guess another hint is in order.

The film was released Tuesday, direct to video, and undoubtedly was produced to cash in on the hype from another film about the same main character that is to be released in a couple weeks.

DarkStrider
Thu, 22nd Jun '06, 6:51pm

Then perhaps Aeon Flux?

Vukodlak
Thu, 22nd Jun '06, 8:07pm
Ok - Superman? I don't know the exact name but I heard that a new superman TAS film was coming on DVD. Is it not good then?

Well, I might not be right but fits the hints...

Corporate Tycoon = Lex Luthor
Alien = Superman/Braniac
chauffeur/bodyguard = Mercy Graves

JSBB
Thu, 22nd Jun '06, 8:26pm
Yes, it is the new Superman animated film.

The alien in question was Braniac and not Superman himself although Superman was the intended target of the orbital weapon. Interestingly the orbital weapon was pivoting around 30 degrees to track and fire at Superman who was pretty much stationary at the Luthor Lab. I would expect that level of pivoting from an orbital ray weapon would result in the second shot hitting somewhere in Greenland rather than shifting a few meters away but quite frankly that is a minor sin compared to the film's horrible dialogue.

The film was made to look artistically similar to Superman TAS but it is not part of the same continuity and the characters are written (and in the case of Lex Luthor and Braniac voiced) very differently. Bruce Timm and most of his crew were not involved in the project and quite frankly it shows.

Here (http://www.worldsfinestonline.com/WF/superman/reviews/brainiacattacks/media.php) is a link to some sound clips from the film. They are almost all really, really bad but the last one was particularly painful. It was spoken by Lex Luthor to Superman. Oh, and the "I am so ... happy" one comes from the scene I was describing. The voice acting on that one is absolutely terrible.

Here (http://www.worldsfinestonline.com/WF/superman/reviews/brainiacattacks/) are a couple reviews from the same site. I personally agree with Bird Boy's review but the other review is only slightly less hostile towards the film.

When the more favourable review states that the film was "a stain on Superman’s shorts as far as I’m concerned" you kind of get the picture of just how bad it is.

Blackthorne TA
Thu, 22nd Jun '06, 10:44pm
I would expect that level of pivoting from an orbital ray weapon would result in the second shot hitting somewhere in Greenland rather than shifting a few meters away...That depends on what orbit the weapon was in. For a GEO, then sure you wouldn't expect that. But a polar LEO, you've got the weapon going completely around the Earth every 90 minutes or so, while the Earth is spinning underneath it! ;)

JSBB
Fri, 23rd Jun '06, 3:32pm
Gosh, Blackthorne TA is right - I should have been far more diligent in reviewing that scene. ;) :deadhorse:

So I checked it again last night and based upon the positioning of the satelitte relative to the Earth, my best estimate would be that the 30 degree swivel shot should have hit somewhere in Mexico. Amusingly enough the energy weapon swivels right back to its initial position after that shot so apparently Braniac decided to take a break from shooting at Superman and cause some random devestation south of the border.

Interestingly enough, based upon the pattern of fire on the ground scenes I was also able to deduce that the satelitte is apparently capable of moving at tremendous speed (possibly teleportation) and appears to be capable of time travel or some other means of being in two places at the same time. Not only do the beams shift from normally coming in straight vertically to all sort of different angles seemingly at random but it also managed at one point to have two energy beams coming in from two different directions at the same time. It is clearly established that there is only one prototype satelitte and given the angles the damn thing would have to be thousands of kilometers long to manage those two angles at the same time - if it actually had two different energy weapons despite the fact that it clearly appears to be only one. :p

Harbourboy
Sun, 2nd Jul '06, 11:09pm
IJA stands for Impatient Jack Ass and is the rule that states that if the poster of the question vanishes for more than 24 hours or so, then the next impatient person can take over the thread.

Barmy Army
Sun, 2nd Jul '06, 11:12pm
Ah, I see, thanks for shedding light on that.

Mon, 3rd Jul '06, 2:27am
Caveat: IJA actually works if the person with the acknowledged right answer goes AWOL for 24 hours. Alternatively, if the poster of the question does not say whether one or more guesses is correct within 24 hours, then the first in time that guessed is deemed correct, no matter how dumb-ass and wrong the guess may be.

No on all counts. Neither the user of the knife, nor the guy giving the lesson is known for martial arts.

The key is the butterfly knife. It's a flashy form of folding knife:

The Balisong or Butterfly Knife is a form of folding pocket knife with two handles that counter-rotate around the tang. It is an ingenious design that, when closed, has a blade that is completely covered. When a well-made Balisong is open and the two handles are locked together, it is as strong and reliable as a fixed blade knife.

Iku-Turso

I'm guessing Cry Baby, even if I haven't seen the film, on the basis of a)it's a musical b)IIRC it's got some street gangs or at least young punks c) it's a John Waters film, which would explain the quirkiness of a sledgehammer fight in a musical

The only problem is that it premiered in 1990, but that would make it made in the 80's...

T2Bruno
Thu, 20th Jul '06, 3:25pm
