Whisper Lillith from Soulgrind - great singer and good looking!

1. Hayley Westenra
2. Deborah Gibson
3. Judy Garland
4. Alanis Morissette
5. Aretha Franklin

No Bjork on my list - too weird for me. Dido and Kate Bush are quite good though. Never heard of most of the others mentioned.

Yeah, screw that list :p

In this modern fast paced world, we only have attention spans to list five singers. Nobody does top tens any more. ;)

Death Rabbit
Mon, 15th May '06, 10:38pm
Bjork almost made my top 5. She's number 6. I'd say "with a bullet," but that honor is for Neko Case. I've only discovered her recently and man, I'm smitten. Most surprising of all is that it's her latest, a country album, which hooked me (and I don't really listen to much country). She's historically more punk, so it's kinda cool.

Harbourboy
Mon, 15th May '06, 10:58pm
A punk country singer? What is the world coming to?

Mesmero
Mon, 15th May '06, 11:42pm
Wait a sec... six people posted and nobody listed Janis Joplin? :shame:

Go listen to some of her music and try again!

1. Hayley Westenra
2. Sarah Brightman
3. Tarja Turunen
4. Aretha Franklin
5. Heather Alexander

Is this about who I like best or who I think sings the best?
(I have to think a while for making both these top 5s)
Also, can they be part of a band or should I solely sum up female vocalists with a solo carriere?

Death Rabbit
Tue, 16th May '06, 5:22am
Whatever you want, MoN. It should probably be your top 5, not who you think are the best of all time.

Aikanaro
Tue, 16th May '06, 12:49pm
Sharon den Adel
Floor Jansen
Tarja Turunen
Liv Christine
Sarah Brightman

Not necessarily in order...

Carcaroth

A random selection of ones I can think off off the top of my head

Beth Gibbons (Portishead)
Katy Jane Garside (From Daisy Chainsaw days, I haven't heard Queen Adreena)
Alanis Morissette
Lou Rhodes (Lamb)
Diane Charlemagne (On Goldies "Timeless" album)

Also up there would be the lass from Puretone (only because of the one song), and Sophie Ellis Baxter.

Nice! An other Lou Rhodes fan :) And now I got Goldie's "Innercity Life" stuck in my head as well. Interesting stuff, Carc.

Here are some of my list, in no particular order. Just a few. There are many other women that I like (to hear them singing, mind you)

Lou Rhodes - Lamb's singer has gone solo. :)
Sia - One of the females of Zero7. She's gone solo as well. The other women, Sophie Barker and Tina Dico are not too bad either (understatement here)
Dido
Skye Edwards - A pity she doesn't sing anymore for Morcheeba. And while the new singer isn't that bad, Morcheeba's new album didn't meet my expectations.
Lisa Bassenge - Singer of Micatone

I might as well have listed Shirley Bassey, Nina Simone, Sarah Bettens (K's Choice), Geike Arneart (Hooverphonic, an other Belgian lady), Sinéad o'Connor (if only for appearing on Massive Attack 's "The 100th Window") and Björk (of who I have no albums yet, shamefully).

Carcaroth- cool to see another Beth Gibbons fan. I am looking forward to the third portishead album to come out this year.

...on another note- Sarah Brightman's voice is so weirdly mucus like to me. Yes, her voice reminds me of mucus. I for one think that Emmy Rossum, as Christine in the movie version of Phantom, has a much prettier voice. Sarah Brightman just sounds so damn weird.

Auril,
Her voice is pure sex, absolutely stunning on the frist album.

Auril/MoN,
I always thought Lambs first album was the sort of direction that Portisheads second should have taken, if you haven't heard the other, I would recommend.

MoN, Now I'm shocked, I didn't expect anyone else on here to know any Drum & Base. "Angel" is usually the track to get stuck between my ears. I'd forgotten about Morcheeba.

Harbourboy
Wed, 17th May '06, 10:14am
What a weird mix of singers listed so far. Who is Lamb? I have never heard of him / her / it / them.

Kitrax
Wed, 17th May '06, 11:21am
Geeze...this is going to be hard.

In no particular order:
Dolores O'Riordan (The Cranberries - one of the only chick bands I can stand)
Amy Lee (Evanescence- tollerable in small dosses)
Dido (Tollerable if stuck at a dance concert)
That lady who does the "la da da da" in Metallica's 'The Memory Remains'...
And because I can't think of any others...this list is limited to just 4. :p :rolling:

HB, Lamb is a duo consisting of Andy Barlow and Louise Rhodes. Both have gone solo now. Lamb was some sort of mixup between triphop and drum&bass. They seem to be like an upbeat Portishead and others compare them with the Sneaker Pimps.

Carcaroth, consider yourself a little less special now then. :p I don't have much D&B. Just the best known of the scene, like Roni Size and Reprazent, Aphrodite, Adaf F, Grooverider etc

Kitrax, you could always add Prince to make that 5 :p

An other female singer I like is Beth Hirsch, who appeared on Air's album Moon Safari. (I got slapped by my roommate for not mentioning her)

Edit: I yet have to find an other person, real-life or online, who has heard of Micatone.

of Beth Gibbons Her voice is pure sex Indeed.

I've haven't heard of Lambs, I should explore them.

I'd forgotten about Dolores O'Riordan- what happened to The Cranberries anyway?

As for Amy Lee, although I'm thoroughly bored to death of that sort of "Linkin' Park" music- if it can be called such- she admittedly has a good voice. I agree with Kitrax's assesment of "small doses" only.

Undertaker
Fri, 19th May '06, 5:24pm

5. Anja Ortodox (Closterkeller)

The singer from Cocteau Twins is called Liz Frasier.
Otherwise pretty good choices.

@HB: no wonder DotW calls you Caveboy [Razz] Well, it's not my fault if I have taken a liking in poking fun out of Harbs.

I agree for Liv Kristine, but not with the ***** from Nightwish.

So, my own top five:

1. Kari Rueslatten
2. Liv Kristine Espenæs Krull
3. Kicki Höijertz
4. Cadaveria
5. Tie between Lisa Johansson and Caroline Wilson

Harbourboy

DotW, I have never heard of any of the people on your list either. They sound vey obscure. Where do you find out about all these singers?

I prefer Death Rabbit's and Takara's lists because at least they are singers that I have any chance of having heard of.

Death Rabbit
Sun, 21st May '06, 1:03am
Plus...my list kicks more ass. Cuz it's mine.

Just sayin'.

ps - HB, I think tastes and certainly exposure differ from region to region. If memory serves, most on Disciple and Undertaker's lists are more European, and aren't necessarily mainstream at all. So while they may be obscure as hell to you and I (as we're both in countries where English is the official language), they're probably local favorites the closer you get to eastern Europe.

I mean the spelling of the names alone on Disciple's list makes me more distant to Europe than before. ;)

Disciple of The Watch
Sun, 21st May '06, 1:20am
DotW, I have never heard of any of the people on your list either. They sound vey obscure. Where do you find out about all these singers? Harby, you have just said it yourself: They're from obscure bands. Apart from me, Undertaker would be the only other to have ever heard those names. There are a lot of great underground talents, you know.

Undertaker
Sun, 21st May '06, 12:53pm
@DR: ALL mentioned on my list are European bands :p And yes, those bands are obscure and only me and DotW know most of them (but I'm sure Nightwish is more known band :p as well as Theatre Of Tragedy)
and all hear this
Liv Kristine Espenæs Krul is da best voice in the world!

Harbourboy
Sun, 21st May '06, 8:56pm
great underground talents What makes an artist "underground"?

Undertaker
Sun, 21st May '06, 10:00pm
Not being mentioned in mainstream radio/TV/press,
Being known to such people like me and DotW only :p recording in garages, or in cheat (=poor) studio for your own money.
Etc

Disciple of The Watch
Mon, 22nd May '06, 1:34am
Liv Kristine Espenæs Krul is da best voice in the world!Maybe for you, but for me it's Kari Rueslatten all the way!

If they started getting played on the radio, would you still like them? Believe me, no commercial radio would play most of the underground metal music Undertaker has summed it up pretty nicely. They're not three-minutes radio-friendly hits.

@HB: no wonder DotW calls you Caveboy Yeah? Caveboy? HB rocks on the "Booktalk" boards. Imagine that, a literate guy who knows good books, but little about pop music. What's this world coming to? :)

Harbourboy
Mon, 22nd May '06, 2:17am
Chandos, don't let them hear you call it "pop" music! It's underground-alt-death-speed-trip-metal (or something). If you (or I) have heard of it then it must be some mainstream sell out.

Death Rabbit
Mon, 22nd May '06, 2:31am

Harbourboy
Mon, 22nd May '06, 2:49am
Back on topic, I'd like to add Heather Nova to my top 5 list, now that I have discovered that she has had more than one album.

So, DR, what is the combined Top 5 for SP so far?

Death Rabbit
Mon, 22nd May '06, 4:31am
Well, the only ones to get multiple mentions are Liv Kristine Espenæs Krull, Tarja Turunen, Dido, Aretha Franklin and Dolores O'Rierdan, in order of votes (from a quick glance).

Though someone else can do the tally next time. I don't like thinking! That's why I come here. ;) :rolling:

True, but she is the all-time greatest female singer in rock. No one has the pipes she had.

Amy Lee

Hmm, don't know how I missed this...

In no order

Ann/Nancy Wilson gotta love em
Charolette Church, the girl's got pipes
Bonnie Tyler (Total Eclipse of the Heart is so awesome, raw emotion)
Melissa Ethredge
Janis baby, she was the bomb
Lita Ford

Oops thats six, sorry couldn't prune it down any more.

Sydax
Fri, 26th May '06, 11:47am
Tina Turner.
Sharleen Spiteri (Texas).
Marie Fredrikkson (Roxette).
Dolores O'Riordan (Cranberries, soon to go solo).
Bonnie Tyler
Cyndi Lauper.

Ooops, that's six...
Is unfair, I like some other girls too, and they should make to the top five too.

Cúchulainn
Fri, 26th May '06, 12:21pm
I am surprised at how popular Dolores O'Riordan is on Sorcerers. Shes not exactly popular in her home country and no-one can stand her harsh singing style.

Mesmero
Fri, 26th May '06, 2:22pm
All right, I guess I had enough time to think about this.

1. Janis Joplin. I fully agree with T2.
2. Eva Cassidy. Probably the odd one out in this list, since she is a bit more jazzy, but she was a great singer.
3. Melissa Etheridge. She rocks

4... and then it became a little bit harder. I mostly listen to male vocalists, and although I know plenty of songs from female singers, I'm not really familiar with most of their repetoire. I could probably fill the list up with people like Dolores O'Riordan (she isn't that bad) or Tracy Chapman (Fast Car is a great song), but I'm gonna stick with a top three.

Oh, and anybody who says Janis wasn't the best that ever lived is just plain wrong :p
