View Full Version : Name that TV Show 7
dmc Thu, 17th Aug '06, 10:16pm T2Bruno left off with:
Looking over this thread I realize I've watched entirely too much television over the years....
A man takes his family away from the big city to his hometown in Iowa.
Hints: The lead actor is more famous for his work with Eddie Murphy. One of the children became a teen idol in her next series.
T2Bruno Fri, 18th Aug '06, 5:57pm The lead actor was Ronny Cox -- who played in Beverly Hills Cop, Robocop, Total Recall and has a recurring role on SG-1. In this series he was George Apple, a man who moved his family from 'the city' to Appleton, Iowa (a town his family founded and he was raised in).
The daughter in this series was originally one actress, then changed to Kristy McNichol after Kristy had played a supporting character in a previous episode. Kristy went on the star in another, more famous, series and became a teen idol.
The series was crap and only lasted one year.
kuemper Fri, 18th Aug '06, 9:54pm /stabs in the dark
The Apple Family?
T2Bruno Sat, 19th Aug '06, 2:44am Well, it was about the Apple family and the word Apple is in the title -- close, but not quite.
Apple's Way was little too obscure...
How about this for a new program...
Tuesday is guest star day.

Rallymama Mon, 21st Aug '06, 4:42pm hint, please...
T2Bruno Mon, 21st Aug '06, 7:23pm This is a very old variety-type show for kids. They used to have mini-series shorts in the show (10 minutes each -- lasting for weeks): a kid that could read minds, mystery about stolen gold, etc.
"Why? Because we like you!"
Each day had it's own theme. And Tuesday was guest star day....

kuemper Tue, 22nd Aug '06, 4:37am :bang: The proper name escapes me...
The Mickey Mouse Club?
T2Bruno Tue, 22nd Aug '06, 2:57pm You have it kuemper.
kuemper Tue, 22nd Aug '06, 3:25pm A piece of wood is a boy's best friend in this show.
Jhonka Tue, 22nd Aug '06, 7:32pm Ed, Edd, & Eddy?
kuemper Wed, 23rd Aug '06, 2:07am Plank told me Jhonka would be right. :thumb:
Jhonka Thu, 24th Aug '06, 12:14am One episode of this series featured a character shouting "death to the opposition!" during a baseball game.
Mesmero Thu, 24th Aug '06, 12:36am That was Worf in a Star Trek DS9 episode.
Jhonka Thu, 24th Aug '06, 5:40am Ayup.
Mesmero Thu, 24th Aug '06, 6:56pm Next up:
There are lights in the water.
Harbourboy Thu, 24th Aug '06, 9:18pm Twin Peaks?
Mesmero Thu, 24th Aug '06, 11:54pm Nope.
Harbourboy Fri, 25th Aug '06, 12:30am Stingray?
kuemper Fri, 25th Aug '06, 12:54am SeaQuest?
The Magpie Fri, 25th Aug '06, 1:09am Flipper?
Harbourboy Fri, 25th Aug '06, 1:21am The Snorks?
Rallymama Fri, 25th Aug '06, 2:29am Lost?
Harbourboy Fri, 25th Aug '06, 3:55am Fish Police?
kuemper Fri, 25th Aug '06, 6:07am Danger Bay?
Harbourboy Fri, 25th Aug '06, 6:42am Aquaman? C'mon Mesmero, throw us a bone!
Mesmero Fri, 25th Aug '06, 10:41am What did you expect, HB? I was sleeping, it was night on this side of the globe! :p
Nope to all, and I thought this would be a softie. This show is even more recent than Lost, but got cancelled after the first season for poor ratings. The lights are actually creatures that live in the water that give light. It's a Body Snatchers kind of thing.
Harbourboy Sat, 26th Aug '06, 11:09am You should have had some sort of alert tealling you to wake up because you thread had had so many replies.
Invasion?
Mesmero Sat, 26th Aug '06, 11:41am So, does that mean you're volunteering for the Harbs Telephone Service :hmm: Everybody gives you their telephone number and you give them a ring when they are desperately needed on the BoM. :p
Anyway, Invasion it is :thumb: (And for those of you who don't know the show: watch it, it rocks).
Harbourboy Sat, 26th Aug '06, 11:55am No way, that was just another wild guess, like the other dozen guesses. No idea what the lights in the water are though.
OK, I am watching this show right now. Two of the models in this show also host their own reality TV shows.
Harbourboy Mon, 28th Aug '06, 10:12pm Models as in supermodels. Nobody has any idea of a show that has at least two supermodels in it?
kuemper Tue, 29th Aug '06, 5:46am I can only think of 2 shows hosted by models - one's a talk show and the other only has one model (re: Playboy pinup).
Harbourboy Tue, 29th Aug '06, 5:55am This show only happens once a year. It's not a series.
kuemper Tue, 29th Aug '06, 9:07pm Miss Universe pagent?
Harbourboy Tue, 29th Aug '06, 9:56pm You're on the right track, but I don't think supermodels are in that. This one had real supermodels in it, including the two who now host their own reality shows (i.e. Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum). I believe this was the 10th annual running of this show.
Splunge Wed, 30th Aug '06, 3:45am Sports Illustrated Swimsuit? (I'm not sure what the exact title is.)
Harbourboy Wed, 30th Aug '06, 4:02am No (not sure if current supermodels would show up in the latest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit show).
This show claimed to be the most popular webcast of any show in history (although I'm not sure of the veracity of that claim). Surely I can't be the only person who watched it. Splunge, you must have seen this.
Splunge Wed, 30th Aug '06, 4:16am The second of my 2 guesses - Victoria's Secret? (again, I don't know the actual title).
Harbourboy Wed, 30th Aug '06, 7:12am Aha! I knew a man of Splunge's refined tastes would be able to get this. Yes, I was watching the 10th Annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.
Your turn, Splunge (aka 'The Body')
Splunge Wed, 30th Aug '06, 2:56pm Lucky guess is more lie it.
Robbie, Chip, Mike (and Ernie)
DarkStrider Wed, 30th Aug '06, 3:51pm Whoa, hold them horses, 10th Annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show? Where? When and why don't I get this show? More imporatantly is it on DVD, is there a best of?
But seriously, greater than 90% of the shows in these posts I've never even heard of, you guys must watch some real dross.
Rallymama Wed, 30th Aug '06, 4:04pm My Three Sons
Splunge Thu, 31st Aug '06, 2:14am Somehow, I figured Rally would be the one to get this. :)
Rallymama Thu, 31st Aug '06, 3:22pm Law enforcement takes on a new meaning in this town, which is also the name of the show.
DarkStrider Thu, 31st Aug '06, 3:30pm A town called Eureka?
Rallymama Thu, 31st Aug '06, 4:37pm you're up!
DarkStrider Thu, 31st Aug '06, 6:03pm Well there's one bloke who wants to make films
Daie d'Malkin Thu, 31st Aug '06, 9:53pm Extras?
DarkStrider Thu, 31st Aug '06, 10:47pm Nope
One guy is a bit Zen
kuemper Sat, 2nd Sep '06, 5:25am Clerks the animated series?
Harbourboy Sat, 2nd Sep '06, 6:10am Futurama?
DarkStrider Sat, 2nd Sep '06, 10:04am Nope to both
Two guys used to be best friends until they fell out over a woman
The Magpie Sat, 2nd Sep '06, 10:21am Sinchronicity?
Daie d'Malkin Sat, 2nd Sep '06, 10:45am Could be almost any episode of Friends
DarkStrider Sat, 2nd Sep '06, 11:20am Nope and nope
The woman the best friends fell out over was a beauty pageant winner from another town
kuemper Mon, 4th Sep '06, 5:31am Two and a Half Men?
Harbourboy Mon, 4th Sep '06, 6:18am The Two Ronnies?
DarkStrider Mon, 4th Sep '06, 10:50am Nope and Nope, it is american.
The female lead tried to avoid new boyfriends, they had a tendency to die bizarrely
kuemper Mon, 4th Sep '06, 3:01pm Buffy the Vampire Slayer?
DarkStrider Mon, 4th Sep '06, 4:23pm Nope
Ok one of the best friends owns the only bar in town.
The other guy (multi-millionaire) basically owns the town and what he doesn't he thinks he does.
The guy who wants to make films works for him and has a spirit guide.
The guy who is a bit Zen, works for him as well as being the local clergyman, which he obtained by answering an ad in Rolling Stone.
The beauty pageant winner was brought to town in the hopes that she would marry the rich man, but hey as luck has it she falls for the bar-owner.
The female lead was a former debutante from back east.
And then there's the lead's receptionist; who is serenely placid, a Buddha-like dispenser of wisdom and common sense. She rarely speaks while the lead rarely stopped talking.
Death Rabbit Mon, 4th Sep '06, 4:25pm This sounds eerily like Northern Exposure to me.
DarkStrider Mon, 4th Sep '06, 4:38pm That's because it is well done DR, have a generic cuddly toy. I honestly didn't think it would take that long to get. Ed was first, then Chris, then Maurice and Holling, and then Shelly and finally Maggie and Marilyn.
kuemper Wed, 6th Sep '06, 2:48pm Oh my. Time for the IJA. :D
Goodnight, Johnboy.
Rallymama Wed, 6th Sep '06, 3:07pm  I was going to give him a few more hours!
...but since you jumped the gun, I'll join in - The Waltons.
kuemper Wed, 6th Sep '06, 6:02pm Obvious for us older folks, Rally. :thumb:
Rallymama Wed, 6th Sep '06, 8:26pm This show was the forerunner of the DIY trend.
Harbourboy Wed, 6th Sep '06, 9:38pm Changing Rooms
T2Bruno Wed, 6th Sep '06, 10:10pm Bob Vila's This Old House.
Harbourboy Wed, 6th Sep '06, 10:11pm Groundforce?
Arabwel Wed, 6th Sep '06, 10:30pm Home Improvement?
Rallymama Thu, 7th Sep '06, 3:11am No to all - but T2 is closest.
T2Bruno Thu, 7th Sep '06, 3:29am Wow, there was one before 1979?
Rallymama Thu, 7th Sep '06, 4:20am Long before 1979! The trick to the question is, what was the host of the show teaching people to do?
Harbourboy Thu, 7th Sep '06, 5:50am Jim'll Fix It?
Rallymama Thu, 7th Sep '06, 1:17pm Stop thinking about home repair, folks. That's not the only skill you can learn from watching TV.
This host was the first person to make people - mostly Americans, but I'm pretty sure the show was distributed internationally - aware that a refined version of an everyday activity was readily available at home, and not something that had to be saved for a special occassion.
kuemper Thu, 7th Sep '06, 1:44pm Cooking with Julia Child?
Rallymama Thu, 7th Sep '06, 2:27pm not quite... you have the right host, but she never had a show with that name! Certainly not her earliest work, which is what I have in mind - and which was so delighfully parodied by Dan Ackroyd on SNL when it was still good (IIRC, she loved the sketch).
DarkStrider Thu, 7th Sep '06, 3:28pm Would it be The French Chef then, as I think that's the one that Dan took the **** out of, but I could be wrong
Rallymama Thu, 7th Sep '06, 3:30pm That would be the show!
/me taps DS on each shoulder with a baguette, "Next!"
DarkStrider Thu, 7th Sep '06, 4:11pm It's a food show, my specialist subject :rolling:
This is a quiz show of sorts, that started life as a theatre show (in Leicester Square, London)
Vukodlak Thu, 7th Sep '06, 4:15pm Have I got news for you?
The Magpie Thu, 7th Sep '06, 4:19pm Whose Line is it Anyway?
DarkStrider Thu, 7th Sep '06, 4:27pm Well done Mags, thought I'd stick a good british one in, have a generic cuddly toy...
The Magpie Fri, 8th Sep '06, 10:04am A cuddly toy! (Wa-hay!)
Back to the quiz:
An Oxford philosophy graduate and a puffball.
kuemper Mon, 11th Sep '06, 2:06pm Hint please?
Rallymama Mon, 11th Sep '06, 3:03pm It almost sounds like Cheers, but I don't recall Diane having gone to Oxford.
Carcaroth Mon, 11th Sep '06, 3:42pm Puffball as in Toadstool, Dress, or other random connection I'm not grasping?
DarkStrider Mon, 11th Sep '06, 3:47pm I'd say the X-files if it was Psychology not philosophy
Rallymama Wed, 13th Sep '06, 3:09pm An IJA softball, since Magpie seems to have forgotten about us...
It was a show about nothing
No need to wait for confirmation, folks, the first person to get it can post a new show.
Harbourboy Wed, 13th Sep '06, 6:54pm Rainbow?
Wiley One Wed, 13th Sep '06, 7:35pm Seinfeld I believe
Rallymama Wed, 13th Sep '06, 8:32pm Of course it's Seinfeld! I'm astonished that took as long as it did.
Wiley One Wed, 13th Sep '06, 8:42pm Premiered in 1981
A gritty, realistic look at the life of cops in a large (and unnamed) metropolitan city.
Arabwel Wed, 13th Sep '06, 9:23pm 21 Jump Street? :p
Wiley One Wed, 13th Sep '06, 9:33pm Nice try but not it.
Harbourboy Wed, 13th Sep '06, 9:48pm Hill Street Blues?
Wiley One Wed, 13th Sep '06, 10:05pm Dead on HB. Your turn....
Harbourboy Wed, 13th Sep '06, 10:22pm The opening credits to this show feature (amongst other things) the silhouettes of two men and a woman. These people are so disctinctive that you tell who they are just from those three silhouettes.
T2Bruno Wed, 13th Sep '06, 11:03pm The Mod Squad
Arabwel Wed, 13th Sep '06, 11:44pm Charlie's Angels
Harbourboy Thu, 14th Sep '06, 12:22am Interesting answers, but these silhouettes are even more distinctive (who can really tell one big haired Angel outline from another?)
EDIT: Actually, how does two men and one woman translate into Charlie's Angels?
kuemper Thu, 14th Sep '06, 1:18am The Avengers?
Harbourboy Thu, 14th Sep '06, 2:12am The Avengers is one woman and one man. Try again with one woman and two men.
This show does feature more than just these three people but they are considered to be so famous that they get special silhouetted treatment.
kuemper Thu, 14th Sep '06, 4:25am Air Wolf?
Harbourboy Thu, 14th Sep '06, 4:32am I'm not sure that is or was anyone even remotely famous or distinctive in Air Wolf. I would predict that the three silhouettes in my show would be recognised by just about EVERY single person on these boards if they saw them.
Therein lies the key. There aren't very many people who are genuinely recognisable from their silhouette. Even the most famous people in the world (like Brad Pitt or George W. Bush) are barely recognisable in silhouette.
Now what sort of person is really recognisable in silhouette?
Carcaroth Thu, 14th Sep '06, 9:45am The Champions was two men and a woman (with super human powers), but I don't recall the silhouettes.
Edit:
Thinking about it, there was another threesome show with Robert Vaughn in, but I don't recall the name.
DarkStrider Thu, 14th Sep '06, 10:27am The new Avengers?
Mesmero Thu, 14th Sep '06, 12:58pm The New Batman Adventures?
T2Bruno Thu, 14th Sep '06, 3:48pm ... or Animaniacs (although Batman sounds right).
Harbourboy Fri, 15th Sep '06, 4:26am You are now on the right track.... Batman is indeed the sort of person who can be identified purely from his silhouette. Now, two men and one woman....
JSBB Fri, 15th Sep '06, 5:45am Hmm, Justice League had the team showing in silhouettes but that would be four people too many.
kuemper Fri, 15th Sep '06, 6:26am Batman?
IIRC, there were cutouts of Batman, Robin and Batgirl, but I don't think they were all together in one shot.
Harbourboy Fri, 15th Sep '06, 7:41am JSBB is right although he doesn't seem to believe it. At the end of the Justice League Unlimited opening sequence, there are silhouettes of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, with the myriad of other heroes zooming past in the air behind them. I suppose Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman must be considered to be the Big Three, although in my experience, Green Lantern seems to actually feature in the most episodes.
Your turn, JSBB.
JSBB Sat, 16th Sep '06, 2:25am The first season death toll was pretty impressive within the family of the lead female character in this series. In the first season her brother was murdered, she was killed, she killed her mother, her mother murdered her uncle, and she killed her mother again.
Harbourboy Sat, 16th Sep '06, 11:48am Alias?
kuemper Sat, 16th Sep '06, 3:21pm Days of Our Lives? :p
JSBB Sat, 16th Sep '06, 9:53pm Neither of those.
kuemper Sun, 17th Sep '06, 1:19am Charmed?
JSBB Sun, 17th Sep '06, 1:44am No it isn't Charmed.
Edit: I guess it is time for a hint. The main complaint about the series has been that the musician (he has actually done a fair bit of acting too) who is playing the male lead character on the tv series isn't as good as the actor who portrayed the character in the feature films.
[ September 18, 2006, 03:10: Message edited by: JSBB ]
kuemper Mon, 18th Sep '06, 2:53pm Blade: The Series?
JSBB Mon, 18th Sep '06, 5:19pm You got it kuemper.
kuemper Mon, 18th Sep '06, 11:47pm The Canadian Quincy
JSBB Tue, 19th Sep '06, 2:58am Wojeck
Edit: Well, actually Wojeck was first by a long margin so really we should say that Quincy, M.E. was the American Wojeck.
[ September 19, 2006, 03:13: Message edited by: JSBB ]
kuemper Tue, 19th Sep '06, 3:41am Not what I'm thinking of. This show is less than 10 years old.
JSBB Tue, 19th Sep '06, 11:47am Da Vinci's Inquest?
kuemper Tue, 19th Sep '06, 5:06pm Yes.
JSBB Tue, 19th Sep '06, 7:15pm Wendy and Marvin appeared in this show but were replaced by Zan and Jayna when the show was resurrected under an expanded name.
Wiley One Tue, 19th Sep '06, 7:40pm Superfriends?
JSBB Tue, 19th Sep '06, 8:01pm You got it Wiley One.
Wiley One Tue, 19th Sep '06, 8:03pm The main character had a little dog named Bandit.
Gawain Tue, 19th Sep '06, 8:18pm Johnny Quest?
Wiley One Tue, 19th Sep '06, 8:25pm Great Gawain! Take it away.
Gawain Tue, 19th Sep '06, 8:46pm The opening sequence of this show has a drawbridge coming down.
There is a giraffe and a rocking chair.
JSBB Tue, 19th Sep '06, 8:53pm The Friendly Giant
Gawain Tue, 19th Sep '06, 9:02pm You are right
(Too many Canadians for that one to get past)
JSBB Tue, 19th Sep '06, 9:37pm On a similar to the wonder twins note - this show's hero cast included a young male/female set of twins who were noted tricksters. Their names were the same except for one letter.
Harbourboy Tue, 19th Sep '06, 9:51pm Tintin! No hang on, Thompson and Thomson weren't male and female. Damn!
Powerpuff Girls? With Floyd and Lloyd?
Never thought I'd be able to come up with two sets of one letter different twins......
JSBB Tue, 19th Sep '06, 9:57pm No, it isn't either of those.
kuemper Tue, 19th Sep '06, 10:43pm Would that be Space Ghost?
JSBB Wed, 20th Sep '06, 12:11am No, not Space ghost.
Harbourboy Wed, 20th Sep '06, 1:58am Under the Mountain?
Rallymama Wed, 20th Sep '06, 2:01am Family Affair?
JSBB Wed, 20th Sep '06, 3:06am Neither of those
The mad haggis Wed, 20th Sep '06, 8:56am Is it thundercats
JSBB Wed, 20th Sep '06, 11:39am That's it. Go ahead The mad haggis.
The mad haggis Wed, 20th Sep '06, 12:54pm This show had a rocket made from a can of baked beans.
DarkStrider Wed, 20th Sep '06, 3:15pm Blake's 7
JSBB Wed, 20th Sep '06, 7:36pm Sounds like something that Mr. Dressup would have done but given that any particular arts and crafts project of his would amount to 5-10 minutes airtime on one of over 4000 shows it probably wouldn't be significant enough to the show to warrent mentioning.
Harbourboy Wed, 20th Sep '06, 9:25pm Vision On?
Rallymama Thu, 21st Sep '06, 2:47am MacGuyver?
The mad haggis Thu, 21st Sep '06, 6:48am None right yet, this was a kids show.
Harbourboy Thu, 21st Sep '06, 7:13am SuperTed?
The mad haggis Thu, 21st Sep '06, 9:04am Nope.
Carcaroth Thu, 21st Sep '06, 9:36am Button Moon?
The mad haggis Thu, 21st Sep '06, 9:38am You got it Carcaroth.
Carcaroth Fri, 22nd Sep '06, 3:29pm A frog that'll do anything for a milkshake.
Carcaroth Mon, 25th Sep '06, 1:32pm mmm. Not doing too well I see. Said Frog was the musical conductor of his "amazing animal band."
Nararted by John Le Mesurier.
kuemper Mon, 25th Sep '06, 4:06pm The Life and Times of Michigan J. Frog?
Carcaroth Mon, 25th Sep '06, 7:43pm err... no.
Carcaroth Wed, 27th Sep '06, 12:11pm No-one heard of Bod (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bod-John-Mesurier/dp/B00004VVRG/sr=8-1/qid=1159352002/ref=pd_ka_1/026-6707606-2493206?ie=UTF8&s=dvd) With Alberto frog and his amazing animal band?
Try another one
"I'm crushing your head"
kuemper Wed, 27th Sep '06, 2:57pm Nope, but I don't watch European tv.
My guess: Kids in the Hall.
/puts up thumb for the block
Nobody home! :D
Carcaroth Wed, 27th Sep '06, 6:17pm Correct-a-mondo
Tries pinching your face instead.
And Bod was shown on Nickelodeon as a segment of Pinwheel... apparently. T'was also shown in Oz, New Zealand, The Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Poland and Israel. Obviously I'm just too old.
kuemper Wed, 27th Sep '06, 7:21pm This show's lead actor likes to purse his lips a lot.
kuemper Fri, 29th Sep '06, 3:51pm The actor in question is also one of the producers. The show also has pseudo-spinoffs based in Miami and New York.
Susipaisti Fri, 29th Sep '06, 3:53pm CSI?
kuemper Fri, 29th Sep '06, 8:41pm Yes. Watch Grissom. He purses his lips an average of 3 times per episode.
Susipaisti Sat, 30th Sep '06, 3:45pm This show's host has a high pitched, ear piercing giggle. And no nose.
Susipaisti Mon, 2nd Oct '06, 12:32am The show is fiction despite having a host. He introduces the story of each episode.
Harbourboy Mon, 2nd Oct '06, 1:21am No idea. The Muppet Show? Kermit has no noticeable nose.
Barmy Army Mon, 2nd Oct '06, 2:01am Tales From The Crypt?
Susipaisti Mon, 2nd Oct '06, 5:37pm Barmy has it. It's Tales from the Crypt.
T2Bruno Thu, 12th Oct '06, 7:36pm IJA...
Not plane, nor bird, nor even frog....
dmc Fri, 13th Oct '06, 5:45am It's just little ol' me, Underdog.
T2Bruno Fri, 13th Oct '06, 5:39pm You're up next, dmc.
dmc Sat, 14th Oct '06, 7:05am Fake heart attacks, an ugly sister in law, a dumb son and a yard of junk.
Harbourboy Sat, 14th Oct '06, 9:40am That sounds exactly like The Simpsons to me!
Or Steptoe and Son?
Chas Sat, 14th Oct '06, 11:21am Steptoe and Son could be correct, but it sound like the US version called "Sanford and Son"
Harbourboy Sun, 15th Oct '06, 2:19am Why do Americans keep taking perfectly good English shows and making American remakes of them? Why not just show the real version and save a lot of money? You can't do any better than Wilfred Brambell and Harry H. Corbett. They are what make Steptoe and Son so classic. That's like trying to do a Scottish version of "Friends" using six new Scottish actors. Pointless!
dmc Sun, 15th Oct '06, 2:36am Sanford and Son is correct. I don't know about any Steptoe and Son, but if it was in the UK, it would make sense that I have never seen it. (By the by, Redd Foxx was fairly funny and hardly a nobody or a new actor.)
Harbourboy Sun, 15th Oct '06, 2:39am The only reason you never saw it is because some American TV person saw fit to take the original brilliant show and make a complete copy of it with American actors rather than just show the real version. Steptoe and Son rules!
The Irreligious Paladin Sun, 15th Oct '06, 7:41am Unless dmc's stated profession is 70's american tv network executive, I don't see how yelling at him and other Americans who didn't have anything to do with it helps, or stops execs from doing it. Assinine it might be, but it wasn't my idea, and propbably not anyone on this site's idea either. (If it was your adea I apologize profusely and for the sake of USA viewing public respectfully request that you knock it off and either be original or show the originals.)
Harbourboy Sun, 15th Oct '06, 7:49am Sorry. Just something that annoys me. On with the game!
Chas Sun, 15th Oct '06, 10:43am A few reasons I can think of to copy a show rather thatn just air the origional, especially when the origional is from another country. And some reasons for this show in particular:
1. The humor does not translate well. Anytime they refer to English events, areas or politics, no one in the US will understand. The US version of english is different from British so sometimes a US viewer will not understand what was just said.
2. Many shows rely on actor recognition to attract viewers. Red Foxx was a well known comedian and took the part of Steptoe. Without him, the show might never have been watched.
3. In the US, this show was one of the early ones to bring blacks into American TV and to attract a black audience. It was a show that could appeal to mainstream viewers and to blacks. It featuread an almost all black cast. Redd Foxx was a big reason for its acceptance.
Steptoe would never have been a success on commercial TV. It could have been a success on PBS (Public Broadcasting System) which has shown a lot of British series over the years. But the PBS audiance is small compared to the commercial networks.
And finally the new game: :)

Splunge Sun, 12th Nov '06, 9:00pm Well, obviously I'm correct since HB didn't contradict me within the 24 hour time limit, so here's the next clue:
Rhoda started out here.
T2Bruno Sun, 12th Nov '06, 9:11pm That would be the Mary Tyler Moore Show.
Harbourboy Sun, 12th Nov '06, 10:03pm Actually Splunge was wrong. The answer was supposed to have been "Happy Days". But carry on anyway.
Splunge Sun, 12th Nov '06, 11:16pm T2 is correct.
And I used Gilligan's Island as a sort of IJ.
So take that, HB :p
