T2Bruno left off with:

Looking over this thread I realize I've watched entirely too much television over the years....

A man takes his family away from the big city to his hometown in Iowa.

Hints: The lead actor is more famous for his work with Eddie Murphy. One of the children became a teen idol in her next series.

T2Bruno
Fri, 18th Aug '06, 5:57pm
The lead actor was Ronny Cox -- who played in Beverly Hills Cop, Robocop, Total Recall and has a recurring role on SG-1. In this series he was George Apple, a man who moved his family from 'the city' to Appleton, Iowa (a town his family founded and he was raised in).

The daughter in this series was originally one actress, then changed to Kristy McNichol after Kristy had played a supporting character in a previous episode. Kristy went on the star in another, more famous, series and became a teen idol.

The series was crap and only lasted one year.

The Apple Family?

T2Bruno
Sat, 19th Aug '06, 2:44am
Well, it was about the Apple family and the word Apple is in the title -- close, but not quite.

Apple's Way was little too obscure...

How about this for a new program...

Tuesday is guest star day.

This is a very old variety-type show for kids. They used to have mini-series shorts in the show (10 minutes each -- lasting for weeks): a kid that could read minds, mystery about stolen gold, etc.

"Why? Because we like you!"

Each day had it's own theme. And Tuesday was guest star day....

Nope to all, and I thought this would be a softie. This show is even more recent than Lost, but got cancelled after the first season for poor ratings. The lights are actually creatures that live in the water that give light. It's a Body Snatchers kind of thing.

No way, that was just another wild guess, like the other dozen guesses. No idea what the lights in the water are though.

OK, I am watching this show right now. Two of the models in this show also host their own reality TV shows.

Harbourboy
Mon, 28th Aug '06, 10:12pm
Models as in supermodels. Nobody has any idea of a show that has at least two supermodels in it?

I can only think of 2 shows hosted by models - one's a talk show and the other only has one model (re: Playboy pinup).

You're on the right track, but I don't think supermodels are in that. This one had real supermodels in it, including the two who now host their own reality shows (i.e. Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum). I believe this was the 10th annual running of this show.

The other guy (multi-millionaire) basically owns the town and what he doesn't he thinks he does.
The guy who wants to make films works for him and has a spirit guide.
The guy who is a bit Zen, works for him as well as being the local clergyman, which he obtained by answering an ad in Rolling Stone.
The beauty pageant winner was brought to town in the hopes that she would marry the rich man, but hey as luck has it she falls for the bar-owner.
The female lead was a former debutante from back east.
And then there's the lead's receptionist; who is serenely placid, a Buddha-like dispenser of wisdom and common sense. She rarely speaks while the lead rarely stopped talking.

Stop thinking about home repair, folks. That's not the only skill you can learn from watching TV.

This host was the first person to make people - mostly Americans, but I'm pretty sure the show was distributed internationally - aware that a refined version of an everyday activity was readily available at home, and not something that had to be saved for a special occassion.

The Avengers?

Harbourboy
Thu, 14th Sep '06, 2:12am
The Avengers is one woman and one man. Try again with one woman and two men.

This show does feature more than just these three people but they are considered to be so famous that they get special silhouetted treatment.

kuemper
Thu, 14th Sep '06, 4:25am
Air Wolf?

Harbourboy
Thu, 14th Sep '06, 4:32am
I'm not sure that is or was anyone even remotely famous or distinctive in Air Wolf. I would predict that the three silhouettes in my show would be recognised by just about EVERY single person on these boards if they saw them.

Therein lies the key. There aren't very many people who are genuinely recognisable from their silhouette. Even the most famous people in the world (like Brad Pitt or George W. Bush) are barely recognisable in silhouette.

Now what sort of person is really recognisable in silhouette?

Carcaroth
Thu, 14th Sep '06, 9:45am
The Champions was two men and a woman (with super human powers), but I don't recall the silhouettes.

Edit:
Thinking about it, there was another threesome show with Robert Vaughn in, but I don't recall the name.

Harbourboy
Fri, 15th Sep '06, 4:26am
You are now on the right track.... Batman is indeed the sort of person who can be identified purely from his silhouette. Now, two men and one woman....

JSBB
Fri, 15th Sep '06, 5:45am
Hmm, Justice League had the team showing in silhouettes but that would be four people too many.

kuemper
Fri, 15th Sep '06, 6:26am
Batman?

IIRC, there were cutouts of Batman, Robin and Batgirl, but I don't think they were all together in one shot.

Harbourboy
Fri, 15th Sep '06, 7:41am
JSBB is right although he doesn't seem to believe it. At the end of the Justice League Unlimited opening sequence, there are silhouettes of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, with the myriad of other heroes zooming past in the air behind them. I suppose Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman must be considered to be the Big Three, although in my experience, Green Lantern seems to actually feature in the most episodes.

Your turn, JSBB.

JSBB
Sat, 16th Sep '06, 2:25am
The first season death toll was pretty impressive within the family of the lead female character in this series. In the first season her brother was murdered, she was killed, she killed her mother, her mother murdered her uncle, and she killed her mother again.

Or Steptoe and Son?

Chas
Sat, 14th Oct '06, 11:21am
Steptoe and Son could be correct, but it sound like the US version called "Sanford and Son"

Harbourboy
Sun, 15th Oct '06, 2:19am
Why do Americans keep taking perfectly good English shows and making American remakes of them? Why not just show the real version and save a lot of money? You can't do any better than Wilfred Brambell and Harry H. Corbett. They are what make Steptoe and Son so classic. That's like trying to do a Scottish version of "Friends" using six new Scottish actors. Pointless!

dmc
Sun, 15th Oct '06, 2:36am
Sanford and Son is correct. I don't know about any Steptoe and Son, but if it was in the UK, it would make sense that I have never seen it. (By the by, Redd Foxx was fairly funny and hardly a nobody or a new actor.)

Harbourboy
Sun, 15th Oct '06, 2:39am
The only reason you never saw it is because some American TV person saw fit to take the original brilliant show and make a complete copy of it with American actors rather than just show the real version. Steptoe and Son rules!

The Irreligious Paladin
Sun, 15th Oct '06, 7:41am
Unless dmc's stated profession is 70's american tv network executive, I don't see how yelling at him and other Americans who didn't have anything to do with it helps, or stops execs from doing it. Assinine it might be, but it wasn't my idea, and propbably not anyone on this site's idea either. (If it was your adea I apologize profusely and for the sake of USA viewing public respectfully request that you knock it off and either be original or show the originals.)

Harbourboy
Sun, 15th Oct '06, 7:49am
Sorry. Just something that annoys me. On with the game!

Chas
Sun, 15th Oct '06, 10:43am
A few reasons I can think of to copy a show rather thatn just air the origional, especially when the origional is from another country. And some reasons for this show in particular:

1. The humor does not translate well. Anytime they refer to English events, areas or politics, no one in the US will understand. The US version of english is different from British so sometimes a US viewer will not understand what was just said.

2. Many shows rely on actor recognition to attract viewers. Red Foxx was a well known comedian and took the part of Steptoe. Without him, the show might never have been watched.

3. In the US, this show was one of the early ones to bring blacks into American TV and to attract a black audience. It was a show that could appeal to mainstream viewers and to blacks. It featuread an almost all black cast. Redd Foxx was a big reason for its acceptance.

Steptoe would never have been a success on commercial TV. It could have been a success on PBS (Public Broadcasting System) which has shown a lot of British series over the years. But the PBS audiance is small compared to the commercial networks.

And finally the new game: :)

This show started in 2000, runs for about a month a year (one episode a week) and is narrated/presented by a member of the House of Lords.

Nope,

It's not a naugthy kid fixup show. More like the science of parenting. It started in 2000 with new born babes, and is following their life onwards.

The presenter has a great 'tash.
