Continuing the tradition of actors singing the song in the movie...

Johnny B. Goode (Chuck Berry)

In this movie, the singing actor first wowed the crowd with the song but later on stunned them with his guitar playing.

Back To The Future?

Thu, 10th Jan '08, 6:04am
Indeed. Your turn A.

Aldazar
Thu, 10th Jan '08, 6:09am
And another along the actor-singing-the-song line:

"I Say A Little Prayer" as performed by one actor with everyone else at the table joining in by the end

okey doke. Might be tricky this one, but might not. We'll see. Guantanamera by Pete Seeger

Aldazar
Thu, 10th Jan '08, 3:27pm
That song always reminds me of a Holden Rodeo advert that used to be on TV here "One Tonne Rodeo... I got a One Tonne Rodeo...One Tonee Rodeeeo"

I vaguely remember that from one of those kids movies, Bug's Life or Antz - my son used to watch both so much that I still get them mixed up

T2Bruno
Thu, 10th Jan '08, 3:36pm
It's been in many movies, could you be more specific?

Takara
Thu, 10th Jan '08, 4:45pm
It gets referred to a lot during this movie, and gets played on the stereo towards the end of the movie. I didn't know it was in several movies. The main chrs mother bought it for him for christmas when he was a kid.

Aldazar
Thu, 10th Jan '08, 5:10pm
So not one of the ones I thought?
This definitely sounds familiar though, or maybe I'm just confusing it with Besame Mucho as used in the Ethan Hawke/Gwyneth Paltrow version of Great Expectations :hmm:

Takara
Thu, 10th Jan '08, 5:26pm
Not that.

Takara
Fri, 11th Jan '08, 7:03pm
This film isn't directed by David Cronenberg, he actually stars in this, and not briefly. He's in this a fair bit.

Takara
Tue, 15th Jan '08, 10:55am
I posted a quote from this film 3 years ago. After several hints, Splunge had heard of the film, but never saw it or knew it's name. It saddens me that still nobody knows this. It's in my top 20 films of all time, First time I watched it I was fine until the credits rolled, then I just cried. It's an amazing, touching, film. But if you want a film with action, car chases, etc, you will find this boring. It's about emotions and behaviour of people in the final hours before the world ends. "Last Night".

nior
Wed, 16th Jan '08, 4:05am
That is sad... now can we have a new entry.

Takara
Wed, 16th Jan '08, 10:12am
Heh, ok. Afro Celt Sound System - Dark Moon, High Tide. Might be tricky as the band might not be well known, but I love 'em. this movie, whilst not great, is well known.

T2Bruno

Gangs of New York

Takara
Wed, 16th Jan '08, 5:11pm
You got it. Obviously not tricky at all for you, T2.

T2Bruno
Wed, 16th Jan '08, 7:29pm
Actually, that was a guess. Gangs of New York was the last movie I saw with "Celtic" music in it. Serendipity is a good thing.

Cotton's Dream -- Instrumental piece.

Hint: It is also called "Nadia's Theme" and was used in the 1976 Olympics by Nadia Comaneci (the first perfect 10). A slightly altered version is the theme to The Young and the Restless.

Hint 2: The theme song to the movie is performed by The Carpenters and was nominated for an Oscar.

Takara
Fri, 18th Jan '08, 11:10am
The Godfather?

T2Bruno
Fri, 18th Jan '08, 4:42pm
No. Not the Godfather (got a chuckle on that one ... The Carpenters singing on the Godfather).

Takara
Fri, 18th Jan '08, 4:55pm
I'm thinking nobody will get this.

T2Bruno
Sun, 20th Jan '08, 2:23am

T2Bruno
Tue, 22nd Jan '08, 4:22pm
Alright, how about....

Fame -- Irene Cara (hint: it's really not a trick question).

[The first song I posted was from Bless the Beast and the Children, the second was the love song in Godfather, Part III]

Takara
Tue, 22nd Jan '08, 4:45pm
Fame? T2, nw.

T2Bruno
Tue, 22nd Jan '08, 8:26pm

nw: No worries. Ok, Lou Gramm - lost in the shadows

Takara
Thu, 24th Jan '08, 10:27am
Ok, hint, first will be basic. This song was made for this movie. In the title it has the movie name in brackets, which I left off.

Takara
Fri, 25th Jan '08, 11:07am
This song plays wilst the main chrs are riding motorbikes on the beach, at night.

Takara

This movie is about vampires.

Aldazar
Sat, 26th Jan '08, 1:20pm

Well, since I've had a brain freeze at the moment, here's one that should be so easy it's shameful

"She Caught The Katy"
the performer may not be necessary but if it is, I can post his name shortly

Takara
Sat, 26th Jan '08, 2:22pm
The title didn't ring a bell, so went on to iTunes to hear a clip. Unfortunately I saw the film name, and yes. Shameful.

Aldazar
Sun, 27th Jan '08, 11:40am

Takara
Fri, 1st Feb '08, 5:18pm
When I saw the film name, I was like  but when I heard it, it meant little. Maybe others are having that prob. Post another, more well known, song from same movie?

Aldazar
Sat, 2nd Feb '08, 6:43am
Well, I'll post the name of the performer and if that doesn't tip anyone off, I'll post a more well-known song...

nior

"Meet Me Half Way" by Kenny Loggins

Susipaisti
Tue, 8th Apr '08, 10:32pm
Didn't think this would be a stumper. Here's a hint: It's the kind of movie that makes you cry big, manly man-tears. Stallone is starring.

T2Bruno
Tue, 8th Apr '08, 10:44pm
Men are only allowed to cry during Brian's Song and when beer is spilt.

Never for a Stallone movie. Unless you paid full price.

dmc
Tue, 8th Apr '08, 10:59pm
Ugh. I vaguely remember hearing Kenny Loggins from Over the Top, which I found myself watching on TBS or TNT or some other similar station. Is that right?

The only reason I'm doubting is because, even in my most charitable frame of mind, I wasn't close to the vicinity of the neighborhood of the remotest possibility of shedding a tear (except, perhaps, from the perspective that this was the same guy that wrote and starred in Rocky -- how far can he fall?)

Susipaisti
Tue, 8th Apr '08, 11:38pm
Over the Top is correct!

There was a fantastic article on it on I-Mockery. (Hence the man-tears part.)

dmc

LKD
Wed, 23rd Apr '08, 7:35pm
OK, this one is inspired by the last song. Please remember I'm new, so if this film has been done before please accept my apologies:

"Everybody Knows" as sung by Concrete Blonde on the soundtrack but in the movie itself it was sung by Leonard Cohen.

Takara

Rock Around the Clock -- Bill Haley

The first movie it was in, please.

Edit: In retrospect, I'll open it up to any of the three movies this song was in. All three were Oscar nominated movies, two were about teenagers, and the third was just super.

Takara
Wed, 7th May '08, 7:42pm

Splunge
Wed, 7th May '08, 8:07pm
American Graffiti (not sure if it was the first one, though).

T2Bruno
Wed, 7th May '08, 8:11pm
Splunge has it.

The other movies were: Blackboard Jungle (1955), and Superman (1978) -- both with Glenn Ford (the song was chosen to be played on the car radio in Superman because of the Glenn Ford tie). It was also used in "Rock Around the Clock" a B-movie from 1956 (I didn't know about that one until a few minutes ago).

"Rock Around the Clock" is considered by many to be the most influential rock song in history. It basically started the rock movement among white performers.

Splunge
Wed, 7th May '08, 8:15pm
Well, I just heard this song the other day (sorry if it's been used here before):

Simple Minds - Don't You Forget About Me

T2Bruno
Wed, 7th May '08, 8:18pm
Breakfast Club

Splunge
Wed, 7th May '08, 8:20pm
Yep. I have to admit - I like both the movie and the song.

Who framed Roger Rabbit?

Splunge
Wed, 7th May '08, 11:33pm
You been dipping into the turnip beer again, Tak?

I should know this one since I used it as a lark in the Song Quote Game, but I'm drawing a blank on the movie.

T2Bruno
Wed, 7th May '08, 11:40pm
No, not Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Where do you think I got the idea Splunge?

Splunge
Thu, 8th May '08, 3:50am
Well, the egotistical ‘me’ wants to say you got it from, well, me (from the afore-mentioned Song Quote Game), but the “me who knows better” suspects otherwise.

In any event, I still have no idea.

T2Bruno
Thu, 8th May '08, 6:33pm
Alright, fine... new movie, new song:

This one has been in a boatload of movies (including an instrumental version in 'Strangers on a Train' and in another movie by Ol' Blue Eyes), but not with these specific artists -- they are unique to one movie:

The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down -- performed by Charles Fleischer and later in the movie by Bob Hoskins

... Fleischer did the voice of a character in the movie (Takara... now you say the name of the movie... hint, hint).

Aldazar

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? I just put the name of the song in iTunes to hear a clip as the name meant nothing. But when I heard a bit, Daffy Duck and the warner sign immediately sprung to mind.

From me... get ready for this by 2 Unlimited

No. And to move to this song you need "spirit fingers". I just checked wikipedia and it was used in Space Jam, but clearly not the movie I posted this for.

Since you are right, in that this song is in Space Jam, you can go.

What? I'm not following you.

Well, I'll go:

No. (Or if it is, it's not the one I'm thinking of.)

Splunge
Tue, 13th May '08, 9:44pm
Somehow, I was hoping my 4000th post would be a bit more significant than just giving a game hint (especially since it's coming before T2's), but here it goes.

The movie is a romantic comedy about two misfits falling in love. It's generally credited for popularizing the song in question in North America.

Splunge
Thu, 15th May '08, 4:28am
I didn’t think this would be so hard. Last hint:

The movie’s title is based on a brother and a sister. The romance is between the sister and a cousin of one of her brother’s friends.

The cousin is played by a well-respected actor who, in other movie roles, has played (amongst others) a sailor, a director, a man with a very sweet tooth, and someone with unusual appendages.

T2Bruno
Thu, 15th May '08, 3:47pm
Bennie and Joon? Depp is the common factor there, but still don't remember the song.

Splunge
Thu, 15th May '08, 4:39pm
That's the one.

You're up, Tim, err, T2

T2Bruno
Thu, 15th May '08, 4:44pm
We'll go with the Coran song...

Luck Be a Lady -- Marlon Brando

Granted his co-star in the movie, Frank Sinatra, had a more famous version.

The Contender?

Edit I mean On the Waterfront

T2Bruno
Fri, 16th May '08, 3:31pm
No, I don't believe On The Waterfront was a musical....

Gnarfflinger
Sat, 17th May '08, 5:24am
I just had a hard time seeing it in A Street Car named Desire...

T2Bruno

No, this also stars Ol' Blue Eyes.

Gnarfflinger
Sun, 18th May '08, 5:01am
It wasn't the original Oceans's Eleven, was it?

T2Bruno
Sun, 18th May '08, 6:17pm
No, Ocean's Eleven didn't have Brando and wasn't a musical.

T2Bruno
Mon, 19th May '08, 6:53pm
If at first you don't succeed, it's time to stop making it so %$^#&! hard....

Do You Know Where You're Going To -- Diana Ross

The song is more commonly called Theme from ********.

Gnarfflinger
Tue, 20th May '08, 4:51am
I could at least make some half assed guesses about the Brando song...

T2Bruno
Tue, 20th May '08, 3:19pm
That you did, Gnarff ... reasonable guesses at that. Now on to Diana....

T2Bruno
Wed, 21st May '08, 4:47pm

Heh, was very tricky. ;)

Low rider by War I know this was used in Dazed and Confused, but in this movie it was played by the lead character on a stereo to "psyche" up him and his colleagues

Takara
Fri, 23rd May '08, 3:42pm
This is very surprising! It's a well known, and popular, movie. The lead had this song playing to get his crew ready to steal some cars.

T2Bruno
Fri, 23rd May '08, 5:05pm
Gone in Sixty Seconds?

Takara
Fri, 23rd May '08, 5:35pm
yup. The song to "get them in the mood".

T2Bruno
Fri, 23rd May '08, 6:41pm
Zip-a-Dee-Do-Dah -- it's been in two movies, sung by a main character in each. Either movie will do (dah).

Gnarfflinger

I think the movie was called Song of the South, and the Character was Uncle Remus...

"Big Gun" AC/DC

No.

Takara

Twins?

T2Bruno
Fri, 30th May '08, 3:28pm
Twins did well in the theater -- the only Arnie movie I can recall that really bombed was The Last Action Hero. Which was actually pretty funny.

nior
Fri, 30th May '08, 5:49pm
Don't from which movie the song in question is from but I think Jingle All The Way is another bomb movie for Arnie.

T2Bruno
Fri, 30th May '08, 7:52pm
That one did so bad I had completely forgotten about it.

T2Bruno
Thu, 5th Jun '08, 3:40pm
Gnarf -- are you still there???

Gnarfflinger
Fri, 6th Jun '08, 6:55am
Nobody has it yet.

The answer is "Last Action Hero"...

Someone else take this one...

T2Bruno
Fri, 6th Jun '08, 3:00pm
Umm, Gnarf -- if you'll look at my post from May 30th you'll see my guess was The Last Action Hero.

Your turn Takara.

Gnarf: Should we type slower?

Takara
Sat, 7th Jun '08, 5:59pm
lol, I thought it might be since it's a movie with Beatles music, but I couldn't be sure. ;)

Aerosmith - Sweet Emotion. This song plays at the beginning of this movie.

Gnarfflinger
Sun, 8th Jun '08, 4:59am

Takara
Mon, 9th Jun '08, 11:31pm
It plays whilst kids are arriving at their high school, and the opening credits are playing.

Takara
Tue, 10th Jun '08, 11:39pm
This is surprising as this movie has been used in quote game, and movie scene game recently.

Takara
Thu, 12th Jun '08, 2:18pm
You should feel ashamed. *sigh* Alright, as soon as the freshman start their first year they get hazed by the seniors, in particular the boys get spanked with wood like cricket bats.

Edit: ok, it wasn't in movie scene game recently, was yet another quote.

Takara
Fri, 13th Jun '08, 2:53pm
This movie has Ben Affleck, and Matthew McConaughey in it.

Takara
Tue, 8th Jul '08, 6:44pm
Gonna post, T2?

T2Bruno
Tue, 8th Jul '08, 10:13pm
How about Hugh Hefner's theme song:

Thank Heaven for Little Girls -- performed by Maurice Chevalier (no, not that Chev).

Takara
Tue, 8th Jul '08, 11:12pm
Damn, talk about a hard post. I have no idea on that one.

T2Bruno
Thu, 10th Jul '08, 6:42pm
Actually, I though this would be easy as it's from one of the top musicals of all time....

I go with something more contemporary....

All By Myself - Jamie O'Neal

Takara
Thu, 10th Jul '08, 6:58pm
Ghost?

T2Bruno
Thu, 10th Jul '08, 9:05pm
No, not Ghost. Jamie O'Neal is a relatively new vocalist from Australia (hit the US country charts in 1999, IIRC). The movie is from 2001.

Takara
Thu, 10th Jul '08, 9:50pm
I listened to the song on iTunes, and sadly saw the movie name, so can't guess. I knew why the song sounded familiar. I really enjoyed that movie.
