Famous quotes that make me think of SP members;

For Splunge: As you get older three things happen. The first is your memory goes, and I can't remember the other two... - Sir Norman Wisdom

For Sorvo: Some say the glass is half empty, some say the glass is half full, I say, are you going to drink that? - Lisa Claymen

For Chev: The fact that no one understands you doesn't make you an artist - Unknown

For Faerus: I don't intend for this to take on a political tone. I'm just here for the drugs. - Nancy Reagan, former First Lady

For Tal: I love deadlines. I especially love the whooshing sound they make as they fly by. - Douglas Adams, Author, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

For Rallymama: Never tell your mom her diet's not working. - Joel, 14, Advice from Kids

For Deathmage: I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer. - Douglas Adams

Not meant to offend, just annoy. :D

Whats the difference between making a move on someone and making a pass on someone?

Takara
Wed, 12th May '04, 1:32pm
Determination. Making a pass you are merely trying. You might succeed, or maybe not. Making a move is a definite attempt to go out with that person.

chevalier
Wed, 12th May '04, 1:39pm
Which still doesn't mean you succeed.

Sniper
Wed, 12th May '04, 2:02pm
Hmm... I'll make a move then yes yes. Thanks. Best bit, my intelligence network has allowed me to aquire the knowledge that the right move with her will result in a definete success! I have it all planned out

Make Move!

Uytuun
Wed, 12th May '04, 5:16pm
Learn from your mistakes. :)

If your intelligence is reliable, and I've no doubt that it is, then just go for it. There's a chance of 0.001 % that she'll reject you, and deep down you know that she won't, right?

A slow is a good choice, the intimacy makes it a lot easier I think.

/me crosses her fingers for Sniper

chevalier
Wed, 12th May '04, 6:01pm
Sniper, don't plan. Really and I mean, really. It only makes things worse. Imagine you forget then plan. And given the stress, you will forget.

How to protect yourself from forgetting the plan? Don't have one! Just make sure you look like you had one :shake:

First of all, you must be confident to succeed. There's no way you'll be confident, though. This doesn't meant you can't cheat fate. Do what chev does - cheat your destiny :shake:

Well, seriously, you must appear confident. Confident and somehow relaxed - that is, you shouldn't be intimidated and stunned, but after all, you aren't chatting with beer buddies but talking to a lady. Respect her and she will respect you. But you must be bold. Audaces fortuna iuvat etc.

If she turns you, don't worry. It's neither the first time nor the last time you'll be turned. It happens even to the best. And she has no reason to rebuff you, well, just why would she? I mean, if you're not her type it wouldn't work anyway, no matter what you would have done.

Look, you aren't retarted, you don't smell, so why would she turn you?

When doubt clouds your vision, and you are lost in the dark, you should always ask yourself: what would chevalier do :shake:

Oh well, sorry. I'm trying to be serious but I'm already hyper and shortly before drinking myself into manic laughter (aka goblin chuckle).

Just go and get her. Be a go-getter. Be brave. Talk to her, smile, look in her eyes. And smile again. Touch her hand, cheek, arm, back, hair, whatever in the conversation. See if she withdraws or does the same to you. Get a drink for the both of you, it should speed up the process :D

The girl will be shy and somewhat afraid, but it's your job to supply her with confidence. If she sees that you're quite serious about talking to her, ie you neither treat her like a pretty trophy when your buddies pass buy, nor you shy away and pretend you weren't talking to her when other people go by - especially her friends & family, you will impress her and she will feel a need to catch up. If she's a reasonable girl, she will appreciate having your full attention.

Now, I know that many guys will say that you shouldn't show a girl too much attention. Or she will start to behave like a beyotch etc. Look: you aren't interested in the type of girl that becomes a beyotch once she knows the guy cares. The sooner you learn she is like that (she likely isn't), the sooner you can dump her.

Also, remember one more basic thing: no excuses. You aren't doing anything wrong. You're doing the most normal thing a male homo sapiens could do. No "sorry, but wouldn't you..." etc. A real man knows what he's doing and he's doing it on a specific purpose. You're there because of her and there's no need (nor any sense) to hide that. Unless you're a good actor and playing a random encounter would give you tactical advantage ;)

But you would still do best if you ignored my babble and went to that girl. And you'll do well to listen to Uytuun. She's quite... resorceful

A word of warning, though: don't promise yourself too much. Slow dancing, kissing (unless it's some wild dance of tongues), holding hands etc is what you normally do with friends. You'll get a conversation if you aren't particularly repulsive and a dance if you're a nice guy, but it doesn't necessarily mean the girl wants a relationship with you. Not even a kiss does. You'll have to molest her a bit more persistently.

I like a girl a lot but I don't know if I love her! and I have no clue at all what she thinks of me, allright she thinks I'm funny and she does send back email and sms's. But when I ask her to come over to have dinner she always has a excuse not to come.

I really want to know her better so I can make sure for myself if I indeed love her or that I just like her....

What can I do?

chevalier
Wed, 12th May '04, 6:24pm
SleepleSS: how many times has it been like that? And does she promise to come and fail to show up later, or does she always seem to have an excuse ready? She may be a little shy or maybe she really couldn't come. How does she normally behave when she's with you?

And you won't tell if you love her or just like her and think she's pretty, so don't bother. Neither does she know, so don't ask her (she could even say she only likes you as a friend out of fear not to belie or abuse you).

Try going out with her, make it look like a date. Cinemas, theatres, parks, cafes, such places.

Uytuun
Wed, 12th May '04, 7:04pm
SleepleSS, maybe she feels really strongly about you too, but is afraid to show it in case you don't feel the same way (that's what I used to do). Whatever you do, don't give up on her and be obvious about you liking her. Try to spend some more time with her and then take it from there.

And heed Chev's wise words.

SleepleSS
Wed, 12th May '04, 7:25pm
I try to spend more time but all the time she has exuses like she has to go to work, or had an other apointment with a friend or must study for exams...

So it could be true. Maybe I must go out with her or atleast go to the places she is going talk to her there and go on from there...

chevalier
Wed, 12th May '04, 7:31pm
Some people will not go to your house if they don't know you really well. Doesn't mean they think it's dangerous or anything, they're just brought up that way. Plus, her excuses seem quite probable. It may sound like a contradiction, but you should neither give up on her nor promise yourself too much. I've done both mistakes and there are moments I wish I hadn't. Above all, don't give up. Missed chances are the worst thing ever.

You'd better start seeking a nice place. If there's a club where they have dancing parties, it would be a good idea.

Don't insist. Have many proposals ready and if she turns one, make a different one on the following day, or two days later. If she refuses three times in a row, stop. Don't call, write, talk, nothing. If she cares at all, she will notice and come up with something in a time convenient for her.

Do you know what is annoying?

The news.

The news is annoying.

Actually it's not the news itself, it's the tiny writing that is in the paper that says '<insert film name here> concludes after the news'.

I don't see the tiny print, because it was tiny (and I believe it wasn't there when I looked, evil print that is magic and appears strangely - yeah this is likely :-| ) so I set up to record the film. I'm watching it back today and what should happen but, with only 50 minutes to go, '<Insert Film Title here> Concludes after the news'

Dammit!

Someone in the flat next door banged the wall really hard and it jolted the fish tank - other fish weere swimming, but Kirias just sat there, not breathing or anything. I dropped food in to see if she was okay and it just landed on top of her and she didn't move at all.

Then after four minutes she squeaked and swam around really fast, I think she's a bit shocked and maybe hurt but seems okay :xx:

Ooooh, suspense and intrigue. :D

Why does Kitrax have to die? :hmm:

Rhythm
Fri, 14th May '04, 5:31pm
Splunge, there are some instances in life when a person makes a decision, and as a consequence of that very decision much pain and torture is brought unto them.

Take, for example, a father with a two-year old child that wants to watch the Tellytubbies. The father decides to let the child watch said television programme. Therefore the father, by allowing the child to watch four distinctly coloured humanoids (one of which is questionably gay, no offence meant to anybody) engage in various "educational" activities while promoting horrendous English to the targeted adolescent audience, is exposing himself to permanent brain damage and possible deafness, blindness and a myriad of other illnesses.

As you can see, bad decisions can make one's life take a turn for the worse. In the same way, Kitrax, by deciding to be represented by a certain blue-skinned character from Icewind Dale, herewith referred to as Avatar, has exposed himself to imminent death, as Avatar was previously in the possession of yours truly, back after an approximately one year hiatus.

Granted, Kitrax might not have been aware of the consequences that the decision might entail but hey, tough luck.

Now Kitrax must pay. :flaming:

OH. MY. (http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/dragon-age/514178p1.html)

What makes the combat system unique is that the game can be played in the over-the-shoulder mode of Knights of the Old Republic or in the tactical overhead mode of Baldur's Gate. The player can toggle back and forth in whatever way feels comfortable. The game also utilizes the "combat pause," which allows players to plan strategy while the action is frozen.

Coffee rules. I had digested my breakfast before really waking up, but obtaining a cup of coffee from the machine in the kitchen was my first more or less fully conscious act. :coffee:

I also rule. I mean, it's spring and all. Maybe I'm not currently having an infatuation, but hormones do their job. I feel like a young Greek god in bull form. Yeah, one more coffee.

Sarevok•

Coffee is seriously bad for you!

Although coffee is one of the most heavily researched commodities and studies have spanned decades, there is still much controversy surrounding its ill effects, or lack thereof, on health. Study after study is performed--often with conflicting results--and it seems there is always a new study out to discount the last one. Still, the average American adult consumes over 10 pounds of coffee per year, which amounts to a total of 2.4 billion pounds a year in the United States alone.
It appears that drinking coffee may interfere with your body's ability to keep homocysteine and cholesterol levels in check, most likely by inhibiting the action of the vitamins folate, B12 or B6. Coffee has been previously associated with increased risk of stroke and rheumatoid arthritis. Studies have also shown that caffeine in coffee can raise blood pressure and levels of stress hormones, and if consumed in large quantities it can lead to heart palpitations, jitters and nervousness.
With that said, coffee is clearly not the healthiest liquid to drink--the best choice is pure water--but coffee and caffeine are far less dangerous than fruit juice or soda. While I do believe that eliminating, or at the very least limiting, coffee should be one of your goals, if you are in the midst of other dietary changes, such as those outlined in my nutrition plan eliminating coffee can be put toward the bottom of the list, and you should strive to eliminate soda and fruit juice from your beverage list first.
There are, however, some important facets of coffee that you should know before you have your next morning cup.

Coffee and Pregnant Women

Pregnant women should NEVER drink coffee. Caffeine is a stimulant drug that easily passes through the placenta to the developing fetus and is also transferred through breast milk.
During pregnancy and in infants the half-life of caffeine is increased, which means that it will stay in your body, and your infant’s body, longer. Moreover, fetuses have no ability to detoxify caffeine.
Research suggests that drinking more than 300 mg of coffee daily, or the equivalent of two to three 8-ounce cups, may increase the risk of miscarriage, birth defects such as cleft palate and low birth weight, although as I mentioned above I don’t believe that ANY amount coffee is safe for pregnant women.
Even with moderate caffeine intake, when the woman experiences no effects, studies have found changes in both the mother’s and the fetal heart rate and blood pressure. Preliminary studies also suggest that drinking four cups of coffee or more per day may put the infant at an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Caffeine may also make it more difficult for women to maintain necessary levels of iron and calcium, which are especially important during pregnancy.
It also appears that coffee consumption is associated with increased estrogen levels, which means an increased risk of breast and endometrial cancer.
Coffee also has the issue of pesticide contamination, which is particularly harmful during pregnancy. You can read more about this issue below.

Coffee and Pesticides

Coffee is usually not grown in the United States and we therefore have no control over how many pesticides are sprayed on coffee crops. As such, coffee is a heavily sprayed crop, so drinking coffee is likely to expose you to a dose of pesticides with each cup.
Pesticides have been associated with a number of health problems such as:

• Prostate cancer and other cancers
• Parkinson’s Disease
• Miscarriages

If you choose to drink coffee, drinking organic coffee might reduce or eliminate the exposure to toxic herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers. The only drawback is that the countries where coffee is produced probably have less control and monitoring for compliance to organic practices along with pesticide use. Another plus of organic coffee is that you will also be helping to protect the health of the people working in the coffee fields, as you will be helping to reduce their exposure to toxins as well.

Avoid Coffee if You Have High Blood Pressure, Insomnia or Anxiety
Since coffee is a stimulant it will only worsen the symptoms of insomnia and anxiety and should definitely be avoided. People with panic or anxiety disorders may find that they are especially sensitive to caffeine and may find that even a small amount of the stimulant exacerbates their symptoms. Similarly, the caffeine will linger in your body for hours after you drink it, so it may keep you up at night even if you drink it long before bedtime.
For those with high blood pressure, a general rule is that the more caffeine you drink in a day, the higher your blood pressure will be. So if you are already at the higher end of the scales, drinking coffee will only increase your blood pressure further.
How to Wean Yourself Off Coffee
If you try to stop drinking coffee “cold turkey” you will likely experience symptoms of withdrawal that can include severe headache, fatigue and depression. This can be avoided by cutting down the amount you drink gradually over a period of days or even weeks. It’s also important to drink plenty of water during the process in order to keep your body well hydrated.
If you find that you miss your morning coffee-drinking ritual, replace it with a new tradition that will also boost your health and energy. Vegetable juice makes a great coffee replacement, and if you’re in a hurry you can try Living Fuel Rx Superfood. Both options will give you the energy boost that you’re looking for in the morning without the negative effects of caffeine.
While you’re in the process of weaning yourself off coffee, here are some tips to reduce the chance of harmful effects until you can completely eliminate it:

• Use organic coffee. As mentioned above, coffee is a heavily sprayed crop, so drinking organic coffee might reduce or eliminate your exposure to toxic herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers. It will also help the people working in the coffee fields, as they will be exposed to fewer pesticides as well.

• Try "Swiss Water Process" decaf. If you are going to drink decaffeinated coffee, be sure that it uses a non-chemical based method of decaffeination. The "Swiss Water Process" is a patented method and is the best choice. Most of the major brands are chemically decaffeinated, even if it says "naturally decaffeinated" right on the container. If you are unsure of the methods, contact the manufacturer.

• Avoid sugar and milk. These are actually much worse for you than the coffee itself. Don't compound the detrimental health effects by adding milk or sugar to your coffee.

• Only use unbleached filters. If you use a "drip" coffee maker, be sure to use non-bleached filters. The bright white ones, which most people use, are chlorine bleached and some of this chlorine will be extracted from the filter during the brewing process.

Just came back from seeing Troy, and I am of two minds about it. On one hand, it is an incredible piece of filmaking, but on the other hand, from someone who studies Classics, it is so disgustingly inaccurate. There are so many inaccuracies, I am unable to list them all.

I do recommend it, but at the same time, don't believe for a minute that it is anything like how the great Homer depicts the War.

Sorry, just needed to vent. I'm okay. Really.

In one of my schools (called "liceum"), I had Latin, Greek, antique civilisations, and a special programme of history and literature. I ended up texting people in Latin, heheh. I ultimately went on to study law as my uni faculty, but I passed entry exams for classics and archaeology as well. I got the third score (3% behind the 1st one) in entry exams to Warsaw Institute of Archaeology or whatever name they use in English. The best one in this country, they claim to be reputed worldwide, not like I tend to believe them on this one. I mean, they used to be, but not really are anymore.

@Laiwethel- Where do you go to school? (I'm assuming you're at uni, but which one?)

I'm actually looking forward to seeing Troy...I took a course in Greek Myth in first semester; and I've been half-wondering how the movie will compare. My expectations for it comparing to the myth aren't very high though...so when I do see it, it'll be more for entertainment purposes than for comparison... :p

Laiwethel
Sun, 16th May '04, 5:43am
@ Faerus -- I'm at Trent in Peterborough, though from TO originally. You?

I'm such a Greek mythology geek, so I have some major nitpicks about stuff in Troy, but as a movie for entertainment alone, it's well worth the price.

And there's no way one can compare Homer's "Illiad" to Troy, even though Troy was based very losely(emphasis mine) upon it. Then again, that's just my opinion.

Faerus Stoneslammer

@Laiwethel- Queen's, in Kingston ON. Though I live on some desolate military base about 25 mins from Barrie ON.

Heh, I kinda figured the movie would only loosely be based on the Iliad. There are so few Hollywood directors out there now with enough attention to detail or imagination to actually stick to the poem. :p

Ah, Kingston. My ex goes to RMC there, and several of my friends from high school go to Queen's.

Desolate military base, huh? Wouldn't happen to be Borden, would it?

:p I know, I know. Most Hollywood direcctors are just out for making megabucks and entertainment rather than follow any actual storyline written by one of the greatest poets of all time.

I will admit, there weren't as many historical inaccuracies in Troy as there were in Gladiator. Dear gods, that was an abomination for historical accuracy :flaming: .

Faerus Stoneslammer
Sun, 16th May '04, 6:26am
Wow!! You actually *know* about Borden...which means one of 3 things...:
1) You, or a member of your family or a friend of yours, is or has been in the military. And since Borden is one of the largest training bases in Canada, it stands to reason that you (or that member of your family/friend) would have trained here.
2) You, or someone you know, lives, or has lived in the Barrie area...
3) You, or someone you know, well, umm...I actually forget the third possibility, but I know there was one!! You'll just have to enlighten me... :p

Highschool friends at Queen's eh? You wouldn't happen to know if any of them are on the fencing team, would you? ( :p just asking 'cause that's the only school club/team I'm a member of, and it's so small that I know and hang out with most of the fencers).

And now, on a RB note (so the admins/mods don't whack me with "the plaque" for continuing a PM discussion in a public forum... :p )...I just noticed the opening of 2 new forums, and am understandably intrigued...or maybe that's just the codeine speaking...

@Laiwethel: Illiad was based quite losely on factual events, too ;)

From Latin to law is sort of natural, especially if you want to specialise in Roman Law (there actually are such people) or ecclesiastic laws (more like my field).

However, I more and more realise that archaeology might actually have been a better choice. Being versed in laws and how they work on the technical side matches my character and will surely help in life, but archaeology could have bring more joy to that life. Give me a book on some weird civilisation and one on some area of law and I'll choose the former one in no time.

I hope it'll be possible to me to study archaeology at some point in my life and combine the two fields or switch over entirely. It would be a stupid thing not to get a Master's in law if I've already started it.

I prefer dead people to corporate people, too.

Edit: Sorry for what I did to your nick. I really was paying attention and I normally remember strange long words easily. Perhaps I saw Laithewel somewhere as well. Sorry again.

I am well aware of the study of Roman Law, we've been discussing some aspects of it in my Roman history class that I'm taking over the summer.

I do better now, but am salaried so they can preetty much ask me to work as long as they want, whenever they want. I even have to carry a pager so they can reach me where/whenever, but if I were to work just 40 hours a week, it'd come out to somewhere in the neighborhood of $35(USD)/hr. Hmmm. I never worked it out that way before. Looks surprisingly nice! Too bad I so rarely actually work only 40 hours a week. That reminds me, I've got to go get a new battery for my pager. :(

Lots of times when I have sat around listening to people talk about their job or jobs they have had they talk about money as the only reason they accepted the job. I can understand this in lots of ways especially when supporting a family is an issue or even the lack of sufficient jobs in your area. I've always wondered and maybe some of you guys out there that have had more experience than i have in the workplace could answer this question. Which is more important....having a job that pays less and loving to go to it everyday or having a job you dread to go to but it pays more than the job you would like to do?

chevalier
Wed, 19th May '04, 8:42pm
I don't have much first hand experience, but a job you hate will kill you and is not worth it. You only live once and, after all, you don't take cash with you on the other side. Getting a job that you like but earns too little money isn't perhaps the best idea. I think the best option is to choose a job for which you have the best predispositions and qualifications. Unless it really, really, pays little and you're also good at something else.

If you have a wider spread of interests and hobbies, you can always work on orders rather than for a fixed salaries. Random ones like translations, tutoring, artistic works, designing something, programming, whatever you can do and they're willing to pay you for.

I've worked jobs that I've hated -- just for the high salary -- in the end it doesn't pay....you end up miserable. Most people don't like to go to a job they can't stand. Eventually, it eats you up inside.

Gothmog•
Wed, 19th May '04, 9:14pm
I've never actualy had a job, but i agree with Spellbound. Having a job just for high salary is sucky. Money is so overated anyway. It's usefull, but far too many people are owned my money instead of the other way around.
Besides, if you're doing a job for money, i suppose you're telling yourself you're doing it so you'll enjoy yourself later. This later rarely happens, since you're so ensnared in the cycle you keep putting it off and keeping it a dream instead of reality. And you're surely not happy with a pile of gold you've earned.
On the other hand, you can have fun every day, not having much money, but it doesnt really matter, since you're enjoying yourself. What's money for anyway? People gather it so they'll be able to enjoy themselves. It's an ideal, rather than a tool they own.

*shrugs*
mind, i've never had to work to get money or anything, so that's most surely an idealistic way of looking at it. I prefer it that way though. :)

Wed, 19th May '04, 10:34pm
That's very right. By the way, why have you never had to work for money? Are your folk’s millionaires or something? Spoiled little brat!!! :toofar:

The best I ever made while working hourly was a bit over $4.00 (USD), maybe $4.25.See, here in New Zealand we're luckey (or unluckey, depending on how you look at it) as the minumin wage that you can get paid is over that. It's probably arond US$5 per hour. This of course has a lot of bad points to it, but when one is unqualified and such it's great.

Sarevok•
Wed, 19th May '04, 10:40pm
I would say that's rather awful. $5 US dollars are about £2.50 Sterling and the minimum wage here is almost £5, which is like $9 dollars. Which is to me is still awful for a minimum wage. Definitely unlucky

I wonder...what's better, "imaginary" things or real things that failed miserably?

Experience has taught me that it is indeed entirely possible to work a job that you seriously hate and which has low pay (ie minimum wage, or just above it). By that token, I figure it would be all too easy to work a job that you despise, but has good pay. Hell, I'd *love* to work a bad job that pays well!

And contrary to what some of you hippies ( :p ) keep saying, money is indeed important. Money pays your bills, your education, your children's education, your food, etc. Therefore, it is completely irrational to disregard money entirely.

Most people don't like to go to a job they can't stand. Eventually, it eats you up inside. Well in that case, my insides must be long gone... :p (that could explain a lot of things though... ).

/me steps off soapbox, and climbs back into his tunnel.

However, I outright laughed at this one:

Would you drink petrol? Talking about drinking petrol the local dairies (or is it diaries?) around here, and most other places for that matter, have been selling nitrus oxide (used to boost cars hence the petrol part. Also called Laughing Gas) in cans for wipping cream. But ofcourse some of the locals have decided that it's "cool" to inhale the stuff

No, the truly bad part is when you're being shipped off to the prison; again without the slightest clue why... Yup...I can *almost* relate with Ozzy on that one...(does it count if the guy who shared the armoured car with me was there for attempted murder?). And the best part is that it happened on a Saturday night; so I couldn't get bailed out until monday...which means I spent one full night at that damn prison...*shudder*.
