View Full Version : POLL: Hats
Dice Fri, 28th May '04, 7:24pm Recently I decided that I need to make some hats. Browsing the internet I found oodles of websites about many different styles. Although not always necessary, a lot of people wear them just to make a personal statement. So I thought I'd post a simple poll to see where the people here fit in.
*note - you can choose more than one option on the second question

BigStick Fri, 28th May '04, 8:18pm The only times I wear a hat are in the winter to keep warm (a knit cap) and in the summer to keep my slowly balding scalp from frying in the sun (a baseball-style hat).
Blog Fri, 28th May '04, 8:57pm I used to wear hats to keep my hair from looking too messy, but now I use the hood on my jacket for that.
The only other time when I need a hat is for sun protection for the few hot days in the summer. But I'm not sure what kind of hat style it really is. It just rings around the forehead, with a shading part that protrudes over the eyes.
Wordplay Fri, 28th May '04, 9:11pm We all have "bad-hair days" every once in a while, don't we? ;) Some hats also look pretty good, and I use them quite often. At winter of obvious reasons, it can be pretty cold/windy at spring/autumn too, and at summer it's just a way to have some shade and style. :p
Should buy more hats; have three different ones ATM... :hmm:
Sarevok• Fri, 28th May '04, 9:23pm Hardly anyone wears caps or hats where I live apart from the teenage delinquents who tuck their trousers into their socks. In Birmingham if you wear a cap it means you are a dick.
Apeman Fri, 28th May '04, 10:51pm Only when playing tennis and only when the sun shines.
Sir Belisarius Fri, 28th May '04, 11:01pm I usually only wear baseball caps, but I also have a nice jungle camouflage hat that gives lots of shade in the summer.
JSBB Fri, 28th May '04, 11:09pm I only wear hats when it is cold in which case I will generally wear a black toque.
Ahrontil Fri, 28th May '04, 11:55pm I wear a black woollen Beanie with the edges rolled up for that casual 'wee thick hardman' look.
It used to be a black corduroy flatcap but they kept getting stolen (go figure).
I have the usual assortment of hats including hard hats, army camoflage hat, Russian grey hat, straw hat etc. but I think that the beanie is the only casual hat ugly enough to avoid being mistaken for a girlie 'fashion accessory' in day to day use.
Faerus Stoneslammer Sat, 29th May '04, 12:41am Only toques during winter; and then only when it's cold enough.
It used to be a red, maple leaf shaped Canada toque. Now though, it's a great toque with my uni's colours (red, yellow and blue)...with a nice poofy yellow ball (aka "pom-pom") on the top.

chevalier Sat, 29th May '04, 3:25am I have three of them for the summer. A cowboy one, safari one and Panama. However, the safari one has got broken and the Panama one no longer fits on my head well after some heavy raining, not like the cowboy one is in a perfect condition, so I probably have to resupply soon.
Dice Sat, 29th May '04, 4:26am I like hats but I don't wear them all that often. In the winter I crocheted a really cool one that had the look and colour of a tortoise. Hanging from under the brim I made a lot of dangley things that looked like dread-locks.
Beren Sat, 29th May '04, 5:53am I always go around in my Oilers hat, Oilers being the NHL team from Edmonton. Pretty brave thing to do in Calgary some would say.
But hell, if I could get away with it during 1988-1990, I can surely get away with it nowadays.
Pac man Sat, 29th May '04, 5:26pm I only wear caps. I got a whole bunch of them, but you can of course only wear one at a time. My favourites are a "Golden State Warriors" cap, a gift from my friends when they visited the US, and of course my NY Yankees cap.
At work i usually wear a red and blue "Montreal Canadiens" cap.
Spellbound Sat, 29th May '04, 5:59pm I love hats, but only wear them in the winter. I have 2 favorites, one brown, the other purple -- they're like bowler hats, with turned up rims all the way around. However, when I lived down South, I did have a big floppy straw hat that I would wear out in my rose garden in the summer, but aside from that, it was just too hot most days to wear anything on my head.
Falstaff Sat, 29th May '04, 7:51pm Well, I have quite a collection of baseball caps, but the one that I wear most often is a black metallica cap. In the winters, that changes to a little black toboggan - think Leon from "The Professional"
Of course, I also have my lovely black felt cowboy hat, and my roughed-up straw cowboy hat. Black for everyday use in fall/winter, or for formal use, and the straw for everyday use in the spring/summer. It's all about being seasonal ;)
Eilonwy Sat, 29th May '04, 9:26pm I wear hats, well, quite often. At summer I wear a very, very broad black-transparent hat where I can hide from the sun and then I have two kinds of high hats, which I think are called toppers in english.
On the other hand I never EVER wear a cap. Makes me look boy-ish...
teekc Sat, 29th May '04, 11:20pm i cannot go out without wearing a cap. It really helps me avoid eye contact so i don't have to pretand happy and say hello to everyone i don't really know.
Jaguar Sun, 30th May '04, 10:49am I have a few hats, and a toque with my old high school symbol. Mostly I wear my backwards hat when I am mowing the lawn. And when I have bed hair when I have to leave the house suddenly.
Uytuun Sun, 30th May '04, 2:03pm What's a toque?
I never wear hats, I look ridiculous with a hat on.
chevalier Sun, 30th May '04, 3:32pm I dislike caps, too. Some people look good in them, but I'm definitely not one of those people. Actually, I look the best with my head totally uncovered, but in hats I look better than in caps and I somehow like hats, anyway.
Takara Sun, 30th May '04, 4:03pm I dont tend to wear hats myself. It messes with my hair. ;) Also, lots of pikies wear them, so I couldn't possibly.
Wordplay Sun, 30th May '04, 4:22pm I dont tend to wear hats myself. It messes with my hair. Yeah, that is a good reason to wear them even more.
Dave the Magic Turtle Sun, 30th May '04, 4:54pm I wear my RAF cap which I got on a school trip!
I usually wear mine backwards because I look like a complete idiot with it round the other way! As to when I wear it, when ever my hairs a mess which is in my case all the time. :p
Barmy Army Sun, 30th May '04, 5:02pm I only wear a cap when I can't be arsed to gel my hair.
I have a nice Diesel one I wear.
I look the bollocks either way.
Dalveen Sun, 30th May '04, 11:25pm I never wear a hat, and if you saw my hair, you would know that a hat wouldnt fit over it anyway :p
Jaguar Sun, 30th May '04, 11:39pm What's a toque? Well, it would be a hat that is usually worn in the winter. Umm, think 'sock' for your head. :p
JSBB Sun, 30th May '04, 11:44pm What's a toque? That would be the standard Canadian name for a style of knitted wool winter hat, typically with a pom-pom on top. The following link isn't to a website about Toques but the site's symbol/wallpaper art is a picture of a toque.
The Toque (http://www.thetoque.net)
Uytuun Mon, 31st May '04, 9:51am Ooh, now I see (the pom-pom -it's called the same in Dutch :D - is kinda cute), thanks for the answers, Jaguar and JSBB.
reepnorp Mon, 31st May '04, 1:07pm This reminds me of my old hat topic (http://www.sorcerers.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=7;t=004622). I only wear my Toronto Maple Leafs hat everywhere I go.
Kitrax Mon, 31st May '04, 9:57pm I have two hats, both "baseball cap" style, one for work and one for when I don't want to deal with my hair. My work hat has a snazzy patch on the front that says "Wendy's service exelence"...my other one is a Green Bay Packers hat. :rolling:
Aldazar Tue, 1st Jun '04, 9:04am Well, I almost never leave the house without my baseball-style cap on - a Dads In Distress one I paid for out of my own pocket. Occasionally though, if it's particularly cold, I will wear my WWF (now WWE) beanie.
iLLusioN' Tue, 15th Jun '04, 8:58am i either wear my leather Pittsburg Steelers hat or my American Legion hat(a baseball league for teens)
Earl Grey Tue, 15th Jun '04, 11:04pm A cowboy hat mostly used instead of an umbrella when it's raining moderately.
Stefanina Wed, 16th Jun '04, 6:01am I almost never wear hats because I think I look goofy in them. I do like the fancy styles and the art deco styles that were popular for ladies in the 20's and 30's. I don't own any, though, because I'd never wear them, nor do I wear the styles of clothing that would be appropriate to wear them with.
The Kilted Crusader Wed, 16th Jun '04, 1:07pm Just a Tammy (wooly hat) when it snows.
Volsung Wed, 16th Jun '04, 2:53pm I have a hat I wear at summer sunny days... It gets really hot here every summer and a hat is a good choice to protect your head from the sun.
Icingdeath45 Tue, 22nd Jun '04, 2:25am I wear a hat everyday, usually an orange county chopper or a black hat wiyh an AC/DC patch on it
