Martin Strel finished the project which some deemed crazy, others impossible and for many, especially the Chinese, it was beyond comprehension. The finish was the place where the river meets the sea, a spot just 50 km (31 miles) away from Shanghai. Martin covered most of the world's third longest waterway and by doing so broke his own Guinness record from the Mississippi (3797 km/2360 miles). The new record is over 4,000 km.

This happened yesterday, and since Strel is a fellow countryman of mine, I though his remarkable achievement deserves some attention here. For some reason, the general press outside of Slovenia is completely ignoring this. I didn't think that just because it happened in China, Reuters or anyone else wouldn't even bother to cover it. Of course, I don't know if there was any coverage in the US when he swum the Mississippi either.

Well, either way, check out this link (http://www.siol.net/dogodki/MartinStrel/lang_context.asp?lang=1) for more information.

He must be fit as a butchers dog that lad. TBH though, I was expecting something different than an overweight middle-aged man before I saw the photo's, lol.

Great achievement.

Most impressive.
Indeed I have heard nothing of it, except on SP.
I agree that this is an act of great physical prowess and deserves media coverage - :thumb: to you for bringing it up.

He sounds like the Forest Gump of swimers...just not mentaly hanicaped... :hahaerr:

The most I've ever swam almost-non-stop, was 200 laps in a 25 yard pool; that's 5000 yards. It was for a fundraiser for the swim team. We only got one, one minute break, that we could take at any point we wanted to, but taking anymore would end the fundraiser for that person. :rolling:

Swimming sucks. But I've swum 1000 meters once, at school, because I had too :(

An incredible achievement, indeed, but I don't think it matches swimming Cook Strait (NZ's North Island to South Island) or the English Channel because he's swimming in a river going out to sea. Thus the current would assist him rather than him being pounded by the constantly changing tides of the ocean.

There were lots of details in our newspapers that aren't on that site. Like thousands of extremely dangerous whirlpools, the river being so polluted he has had (and still has) serious health problems after being in it for so long, having to dodge dead bodies floating in the river because of the floods, having to have helper ships clear the way for him all the time because he'd otherwise be crushed by all the traffic on the river (it's extremely busy)... I think he'd much rather swim in the sea than have to face that.

Oh...
I stand corrected. Well... he's rugged. He's also a nutter.
