View Full Version : Favorite Party type
IronEagle Sun, 29th Oct '00, 11:37pm Im not asking for favorite characters. I wanna know what kinda party everyone likes to have... I go with the 3 mages 3 attackers method. But next time im gunna go with a 3 attackers 1 archer (good archer) and 2 mages. I have noticed alot of people like to use 4 mages and 2 attackers... So i just wanna know whats more fun.
The Kurgan Sun, 29th Oct '00, 11:42pm 1 Mage - Dispelling, Holding, Etc.
1 Mage - Offensive and Summoning.
1 Fighter/Druid - Healing, Fighthing, Group spells.
2 Attackers
1 Theif - Archery, Backstab
That's what i like.

Crawl Mon, 30th Oct '00, 5:46am -fighter-mage of some sort, this game makes this class very good, but usefull in any, even if only as a backup to other fighters or mages in different scenarios
-fighter-in this game, I like berzerkers(no real drawbacks, usefull special ability), any party needs one straight forward melee specialist
-ranger-when they can reach higher levels, good stealth, usefull for ranged attacks and with two handed weapons, backup clerical spells
-fighter-druid-I like multi class here because can reach good levels in both classes, prefer over fighter-cleric because can use scmitars, nice to have a front line fighter who can cast spells while wearing full plate
-mage-cleric-also like this multi class, not great in either class, but makes up for it in sheer spell number, good backup to other spell casters
-thief dual mage-for spellcasting parties, this is the best option, mage can still cast high level spells and be used as an adequate theif(at least for traps, locks, and stealth) and can use short bow

have:
4 fighters
3 mages
1 cleric
1 1/2 druid
1 thief

I'll catch slack for this, but I don't like to waste space with straight theif or cleric/druid classes, I find them more usefull multi/dual classed, and as can be seen, I like multiple spell casters and fighters, the more the merrier, having three mages helps a lot
Draco Vlasavius Mon, 30th Oct '00, 10:16pm I know no one has mentioned names but I hafta! Although everyone adds/drops party members throughout BG2 here is what I found that is best for me.
1) True Fighter or Monk to deal & take 'toe to toe' damage. Scripted AI to attack aggressively.
2) Ranger (Minsc) for 'air attack', few healing spells or assist on the frontline. Scouting. Scripted AI to mainly defend spellcasters.
3) Mage/Thief (Imoen) for traps, spellcasting, thieving skills, air attack. Varying AI script.
4) True Cleric (Viconia) all lvl cleric spells. Focusing on protection spells/healing spells 'galore'. Air attack. Scripted AI to heal party members/defensive spells.
5) Mage/Thief (Nalia) main spellcaster with any beneficial rings/robes to enhance/add spells or spell casting, etc. Air attack. Scripted to offensively cast.
6) Ranger (Valygar)for 'air attack', few healing spells or assist on the frontline. Scripted AI to mainly defend spellcasters.
I would've liked to trade my 2 Mage/Thieves in BG2 for a True Thief and a True Mage that had 18's in their respective class abilities. Not Yoshimo or Edwin. Can't trust em' and Yoshimo is a Kit Class. Edwin's an ass. Besides he did Minsc & Dynahir WRONG in BG1!

The Wretched Tue, 31st Oct '00, 5:02am I don't have a specific party make-up that I like, because it tends to vary from game to game (especially in those like BGII, where you don't get to choose each character's class). However, I always put as many fighters in my party as I can fit. Even characters who fill other roles (mages, thieves, clerics) will often have a warrior class of some sort dual- or multi-classed in with them.
The reason I like this is that, in addition to each character fulfilling his particular role in the party, I don't tolerate weaklings who need a babysitter to keep them alive. Thus, if my mage finds himself in battle, he darn well better be able to buff up and whip out a sword if he wants to survive in my group!
This is not to say that I play in a "bum-rush" style of party, or that my characters don't support one another in battle. I use choke points, fall-back tactics (so injured party members can heal up, while others close in ranks to keep monsters from following), and such. As well, many of my party members use missile weapons, one or two might even use them exclusively. The simple fact of the matter is, should the time come, every member of my team must be able to protect himself, should immediate aid not be at hand.
:)
Nefar Tue, 31st Oct '00, 9:32am I usually have 9 "slots" to fill with 6 characters. So some are multi- or dual-classed:
3 Wizards (minimum 2)
2 Warriors (minimum 1)
3 Priests (minimum 2)
1 Rogue (minimum 1)
This may vary as long as I don't get below the minimum with any class.
Erran Tue, 31st Oct '00, 2:38pm Question for the Wretched, I used the 'everyone can look after themselves' technique in IWD but I don't find it works so well in BG2 because you cannot change armour in combat. Defending yourself is one thing, defending yourself in your dressing gown is another. Or do you use a lot of Stoneskin/protect from weapons type spells?
Elverath Tue, 31st Oct '00, 6:06pm Fighter

Wingfoot Tue, 31st Oct '00, 7:07pm Fighter

Mage
Fighter/Thief or a Mage/Thief
i like having 2 priest types for healing spells of course.
2 mages can come in handy, but i really only like to use one.
gotta have a thief, but not a pure thief, for i find pure thieves pretty useless when it comes to fighting.
someonebored Thu, 2nd Nov '00, 3:04am fighter mage thieves with a lot of invisibility spells helps a lot (500 damage per combat...)
Sir Belisarius Thu, 2nd Nov '00, 4:26pm I have a Paladin (Main Character)
Minsc (Ranger)
Jaheira (Fighter Druid - Although she's getting annoying, so I may drop her any day)
Yoshimo (Bounty Hunter - this is my interchangeable slot for the NPC du jour)
Aerie (Mage/Cleric)
Conjurer
Markyboy Thu, 2nd Nov '00, 5:00pm Barbarian (Ragnarok) = me
Paladin (Keldorn)
Stalker (Valygar)
Thief/Illusionist (Jan)
Thief/Mage (Nalia)
Mage/Cleric (Aerie)
But i'm not certain with Valygar, although he is VERY cool with Celestial Fury and his own katana...Maybe i'll change him back for Minsc...'cause, well, ehh...Minsc is Minsc. And who doesn't love Boo?
Vermillion Thu, 2nd Nov '00, 11:34pm 2 Warriors
2 divine spellcasters
at least 1 arcane spellcaster, usually mage/thief
and atleast one other rouge class character, although i sometimes use anopther warrior class character instead
Pattest the Baddest Fri, 3rd Nov '00, 6:58am Here's what I've got.
1 Fighter (Minsc) I know he's a ranger, but stick two swords and apply beatings.
1 Paladin (Keldorn) Average, solid fighter, with O.k> special abilities.
1 Fighter/Thief (Yoshimo) Mostly thief but can go toe-to-toe with two katanas.
1 Fighter/Druid (Jahiera) Healer and Fighter all-in-one. What could be better?
1 Mage (Me) I like Fireball. A Lot.
1 Mage/Cleric (Aerie) Lots of spells. Good healer and offensive magic-user later.
Shrike00 Fri, 5th Oct '01, 4:47pm I like a party built like this:
Straight Fighter
I use a berserker
Special Fighter (Paladin or Ranger)
I use an Inquisitor
Multi Cleric (Fighter or Ranger/Cleric)
I use a Ranger/Cleric for Druid spells
Multi or Dual Thief (Whatever with a thief)
I use a dual Thief/Mage
Archer
Obviously, I use an Archer
Multi Cleric/Mage
I like this because it gives you some of each spell. My other mage is primary for higher level mage spells. This guy is a backup.
Let me know what you think.
Jack Funk Fri, 5th Oct '01, 5:19pm I like a balance party. I am playing IWD right now and my party consists of:
Fighter
Fighter
Bard
Cleric
Illusionist
Fighter/Thief
Deano99 Fri, 5th Oct '01, 5:22pm i tend to have Fighter heavy parties, i tend to forget spells if i have spell casters. I usually end up with
3 Warriors (usally 2 Fighters and a Ranger)
Fighter/Druid (just for the healing)
Cleric/Mage
Thief or Thief/Mage
it really all depends on how many spells i'll think i'll need with the last choice.
Ragusa Fri, 5th Oct '01, 6:19pm Depends on. Actually I have been very happy with the following line-up:
2 Melee-fighters
2 Missile weapon fighters (preferably with guard function)
2 Support Characters (thief/ spellcaster)
Cuts through every enemy group like butter. I use the magic and spellcasting to eliminate the strongest enemies first.
Thomas Covenant Fri, 5th Oct '01, 8:36pm Yup. Depends on what type of game you are after to play. At current moment, I'm playing with 6 diff classes (and I enjoy playing that way because you get to see them grow). It's custom made party:
Kensai (main, pure fighter, human, AC 4-argh)
Barbarian (half-orc, 19 str, con)
Monk (waiting for lvl 20 $$)
Sorcerer (human, very low hp)
Priest of Lethander (human, can be boosted if needed)
Assasin (elf, short bow, backstab)
And so far it's been going all good, I managed to get my hands of Staff of Magi, with these ppl, all lvl around 11, and totally wrong magic for sorcerer on lower levels(next time, next time).
I've made some plans for my next game that should be something like this (don't have idea about races yet):
Archer (main, I read paladin stronghold is not that good)
Paladin (for 2-handed swords, have none current game)
Berserker (dwarfen prolly, but thinking about some other kits as well)
Kensai/mage (have to try that one)
Swashbuckler/cleric (got it of SP $$)
Sorcerer (with diff set of magic) - or mage dunno yet.
So to answer your q: no favorite type of party :)
Edit: ew, old one

Gyllius Lightninghand Sat, 6th Oct '01, 2:55am I prefer parties with many tanks. The actual one is:
Elven Fighter (from BGI, 19 Str and Dex, LG)
Minsc (Good Fighter, some spells, very very funny)
Keldorn (Gauntlets of Ogre Power + Carsormyr, wow!)
Sir Anomen (Healing and nice backup Fighter)
Imoen (Mage and Thief)
Aerie (Backup Mage and Cleric)
For a all new party:
Kensai/Mage
Berserker
Inquisitor
Illusionist/Thief
Mage or Sorcerer
Cleric

Assassin: Short bow

FenixStrife Sat, 6th Oct '01, 2:24pm I like to go with a fairly fighter heavy party, I only have one person that cant tank efficiently. heres my party layout right now:
FenixStrife - Kensai dualed to theif at level 12, imported from BG1 and so has great stats cause of tomes. best HP and thac0 in my party. Dual-weilding Celestial fury and some +3 long sword (the name escapes me)
Keldorn - Inquisitor, wonderfull fighter with carsomyr and gloves of dex. Also has really cool special abilities
Minsc - Ranger, nice 2H sword tank, (I love 2h swords) currently weilding lilarcor, switching to warblade +4 or silver sword when I leave the underdark.
Anomen - Fighter=>Cleric, good spell support and can actually get hit with a flying twig and survive (unlike viccy). Also isnt quite as annoying once he turns lawfull good. dual-weilding hammer of thunderbolts and flail of the ages. will switch to crom fayer once out of underdark.
Belgareth - sorcerer, main spell support, I had to create my game in multi and drag it over to single to get him in. weilding the staff of rynn and the +5 sling with unlim bullets. but the main thing that affects his dammage dealing potential is the robe of vecna, gotta love the fast casting. (I created this char cause I dont like any of the in-game mages)
Namuras Sat, 6th Oct '01, 5:44pm My favourite party so far is not the best one I've played, but the funniest.
Berserker/Druid (Me, using spears and generally rockin')
Anomen (for the clerical stuff, using hammers, flails and slings)
Jaheira (great tank with a girdle of giant strength)
Jan (spellcasting, thievery and turnips)
Haer'dalis (every class save priest in the same character)
All are good spellcasters of some kind, all but Anomen can cast stoneskin and all but Jan are good fighters.
Tassadar Sun, 7th Oct '01, 3:16am eh? how do you drag over your characters from multiplayer to singleplayer?
Kailynne Johanne Sun, 7th Oct '01, 3:22am He is probably referring to dragging and dropping the Save game directory over to the MPS Save game diretory using Windows Explorer - or vice versa...
Also, in multiplayer, you can directly import charcters from other games.

corbulo87 Sun, 7th Oct '01, 12:01pm RACE/CLASS MAIN WEAPONS USED
Elven Fighter (Corbulon)- 2hnd swords
Dwarven Barbarian (Thorgrim)- Axes, Hammers
Half Orc Figh/Cler (Ghazkhull)- Flails and
shields
Halfling Fighter Thief (Samuel)-Shortbows, Longswords
Elf Ranger (Fithvael)- Longbows
Elf Sorcerer (Anduin)- Slings, Quaterstaff
Laertiades Mon, 8th Oct '01, 12:46am It really depends on your lvl, for example, at lower levels fighters kick ass. at later levels **** like Monks do serious damage.
Monk
Mage
Thief/Mage/archer
Fighter/Cleric
Fighter/mage
Cleric/Mage or vice versa (and yes, it does make a huge difference which comes first)
Alyr Arkhon Mon, 8th Oct '01, 12:56am Fighter
some fighter multiclass
archer
cleric
specialist mage
illusionist/thief
Arabwel Mon, 8th Oct '01, 10:20am I'm quite new for the game, and haven't had time to explore all the possibilities, but this is my current party, and I think I will stick to it, because I have a concurrent romances-patch running... 'tis fun...
Fighter/Mage/Thief (me)
Bounty Hunter (Yoshimo)
Thief/Mage (Nalia)
Mage/Cleric (Aerie)
Fighter/Druid (Jaheira)
Fighter/Cleric (Amoen)
I like to have lots and lots of spells because they're cool, and I also like characyers who can do damage physically. My own character had the infamous armor problem, too...

Deathmaster Wed, 9th Jan '02, 11:58pm Can't go wrong with this party
Fighter/mage
Fighter/mage/thief
Fighter/mage/cleric
Ranger/Cleric
Fighter/druid
Fighter/thief
Best thing about this party is that everyone is a fighter, and a spellcaster, except the F/T. Meaning they all get tons of hit points.
This gives me a total of
5 fighters
1 ranger
2 thieves
3 mages
3 healers
Wildfire Thu, 10th Jan '02, 12:05am 2 bards
1 mage
1 fighter
1 mage/theif
1 cleric
Barrels of fun ;) :D
Hardcase Von Crudd Thu, 10th Jan '02, 4:40am Here's my current party:
:borg: Dwarf F/C (tank)
 Human Monk (find traps, fast scout, average fighter)
:book: Half-Elf C/M (magic, magic and more magic)
:money: Halfling F/T (high pick pockets & open locks skills - he finances the party and dual wields swords, decent fighter)
This leaves two slots free for NPCs so I can do the side quests.
Jan Jansen is a regular because this guy is FUNNY!
The current other NPC is Aerie since we have just rescued her. I think she'll get the boot soon because I'm already getting sick of her wimpy attitude. :toofar:
I find this lineup works well for me.
I love bg2 Thu, 10th Jan '02, 5:56am i always play single player so i get all the side quests and then use sk to change the npc's class races and abilities but only enough so that its the same as the character types lvl, so my current faverite party type is,
kensai/mage
kensai/thief(at higher levels i've done 350+hd with this one)
berserker/mage
cleric/mage
sorcerer
barbarian(they get tons of hp and there rage abilty makes up for not going past 2 ability points with weapons and their weapon resistances counter their disadvantage with armor)
with boots of speed the kensai thief becomes a good scout capable of doing lots of damage and setting traps the kensai/mage and berserker/mage are good spell caster support and are effective toe to toe bashers even better with stone skin mirror image and fire sheild :) the cleric/mage can attack with ranged weapons with the kensai/thief heal the group and add even more casting power and the barbarian and sorcerer are thier to make sure that theirs always at least one powerful fighter and spell caster at all times so thats my idea of a perfect party as they've all got their uses
