Well, she's got one eye with a corrective intraocular lens and one eye that's srill myopic, so she's got distorted vision. Other than that, she's fine, and she's going to get fitted for a single contact lens to compensate for the distortion until she gets the second surgery done.

I was just called racist for saying I don't like rap or hip-hop music. Unbelievable! Thats the 3rd time getting that title in 5 years!

The other times were for asking for a black (or was it white?) coffee in Leeds (England) and for being thrown out of a Filipino cafe for being white (Belfast not Manilla)!

In other news, Rhetorical Question has an identity crisis and allows one personality to gain greater sway over the various others, assume control of his account and manifest an avatar. And a nice bit of Latin, too. Pretty.

The ego sits back and watches this new turn of events with interest.

Well well Congratulation Arifirh! Nice avatar too,

Ofelix looks at his little gems--- sigh, I want an avatar too! :( :(

What does that latin mean anyway?

Arifirh
Tue, 19th Jul '05, 5:44pm
Thanks Ofelix :)

The Latin means "Last light calls the defeated" - it's a line from the Aeneid book II after the sacking of Troy.

Enagonios

Yeah, congrats too. Just a question though: we can DO that? Change names if we get avatars?

sorry if it sounds like the country mouse in the city, but I wasn't aware of that :)

just a question, does Arifirh mean anything? or did you just change it because it sounds snazzier? ;) and is easier to type :D

Ofelix
Tue, 19th Jul '05, 5:55pm
You can change name even if you don't have an avatar. I used to be called Dungeon Master, but I was sick being always called DM so I change to Ofelix... But now on FAI people call me Flix... sigh...

Unbeknownst to many, hidden carefully at the back of the list of secret weaponry of the Spanish Inquisition somewhere between 'fear' and 'nice red uniforms', is stealth. It involves the hiding of gems, the changing of names, and confuddlement of all who look upon me!

I'm NEVER gonna change my PDN. It took me five long seconds to come up with Felinoid, and it fits perfectly. I might change my title or location, but not my name. And the only avatar I like better than the one I've got now is Bard's 'rakshasa'.

The Magpie
Tue, 19th Jul '05, 8:54pm
I'm sticking to "The Magpie", too. Although I have been tempted to drop the "The" a couple of times, to avoid confusing others. The "The" isn't all-important, it's there because the name is more of a title bestowed upon me by my mates, on behalf of my ammunition hoarding habits during co-op games of Halo. I was also going to have "Ooh! Shiny Ones!" as my comment originally, but hadn't counted on the Dak'kon avatar being free. As it is, that quotation suits me perfectly.

Also, has anyone else noticed that a lot of people seem to go for avatars in the 200s? I reckon that the Toblerone-wrapper-esque ugliness of the Tchazar gem must be a big factor in keeping the SP servers running... :shake:

@Ara: Because it was higher than you would have liked, of course. :p

Men are hopeless. Just what guy will even think about lifting his big bum up when a woman enters the room? Heck, probably all or almost all would keep sitting even if she walked over and started talking.

Or shopping bags. Freaking disco freaks subculture guys in freaking jumpsuits walking before (horror already!) their women, the latter carrying full shopping bags. Wonder if the studs would at least keep the door open... not bloody likely, but maybe there's still some hope.

The comments they let out would get them shot in a decent society. Or slapped. Yeah, most of the modern "compliments" deserve a slap across the kisser. Just shoot them already.

On second thought, women aren't probably much better. After all, someone's taking those comments with a happy face, isn't he? Or letting those hands come and stay. Not to mention flaunting stuff around. I remember that wonderfully cynical phrase, "A lady is one that does not show her underwear unintentionally." Of course, I don't probably need to announce my reservations about intentional display. Here's freaking news: whatever you show will be looked on. After all, that's what they want when they show. You show for it be looked on or there's no freaking logic in it. I will gladly agree that there's a difference between looking and staring but come on, who's really into such subtle distinctions nowadays? Especially between those who are into showing.

Wonder if men are ever going to start respecting women again and if women are ever going to start respecting themselves again. Looks like ladies and gentlemen has become a polite address nowadays. Either this or the name of an extinct species. Right... The dragons probably ate the princesses right before pounding each other into nonexistence with the knights.

Just give me some alcohol. Before I start ranting on dating customs. Too late! I've already started. Non-exclusive dating, my foot. What the hell is non-exclusive dating? How can one even think about kissing another when it's already come to kissing with a person? Even Catholics do that nowadays. And they think they're oh so moral and virginal. Yeah. My foot. :bs: I've actually been asked what's wrong with an extra-marital affair if there's no sex in it. Not to mention Catholics and other Christians thinking it's OK to have multiple such affairs and even teaching their children it's healthy. Someone's going to judge such things and I'm not that someone, so I don't care, but I pity the kids. Oh well...

Quite the opposite in fact (well, almost) I'm getting plenty of hours at work so I must be proving quite valuable to them, my 3-year-old's mother has had an amazing change of heart and is letting me see Riley every Wednesday, all day, as well as getting regular visits from them both, AND she and I are getting along really well and even discussing the possibility of getting back together (long story, and if we get back together I'll be strenuously advising we get couselling together). The only bad thing is that I still haven't seen Nathaniel (my almost-8-year-old) and it's been about 3 years now I guess.

Plus, working behind a bar cna introduce you to some seriously hot women who aren't looking for much in the way of commitment, just good, safe, consenting fun.

You never know though, my luck may return to what it was any time.

Bad day in the hay field today. Pulled a bale off the chute before it fell off going around a corner, and it came down hard--hyperextending my knee slightly, then later, when I missed a bale in a similar situation, I had to jump off the wagon, and my foot slid, causing me to fall and land on my hip. At least I was the only one not getting stung by the Bumblebees that were disturbed at one point...

The same way you can have a relationship with someone without sex. Let's say, things that aren't necessarily sexual but not something you would do with your sister (or not the same way as you would with a sister). Acting like a romantic couple isn't perhaps an accurate description but the best I can think of right now. Would you believe that there are Christians who say (heck, more like preach) that it's okay to have several romantic partners at once, so long as you sleep with none? The trend is growingly popular and I've actually come across a clergyman talking such things.

Probably because to Chev, it's cheating to even think of another woman, if you're married. In sexual or romantic ways? But of course. It's not a problem when you see her and think what a nice, beautiful, smart or whatever girl she is. But it when it grows into fantasising, there is a problem. Whoever looks on a woman to lust after her, has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

@Aldazar: Welcome back! ;)

@Felinoid:

So this is one of those thoughts=actions things. How would you classify aritistic appreciation? (e.g. Damn, that girl looks hot!)That's not artistic appreciation. It's sexual appreciation. Artistic appreciation would gravitate in the direction of beautiful, charming, awe-inspiring etc rather than hot, sexy, whatever.

Still, there's no problem in recognising someone as sexually attractive. One would have a medical problem if he didn't feel attracted to attractive people of the opposite gender. There's a problem in acting on the attraction. Fantasising is already acting, as it requires a previous choice.

@Enagonios: I'm absolutely serious (and it was a verbatim quote from the Gospel according to Matthew :p ). Notice two things: "lust" and "to". It doesn't say anything about being attracted to someone or judging him as attractive. It concetrates on looking at someone in a sexual way, in order to incite or quench your sexual urges. The same way as it is already wrong to contemplate murdering your wife, it's already wrong to contemplate betraying her with another woman.

@Chev: I bet you don't even flirt.

Where are all the party animals on this site? A little innocent flirting doesn't hurt anyone. So long as you don't actually think about doing anything, it's just a simple compliment on someone's looks. Some women actually need strangers to say these things to validate their self-image (sad but true).

chevalier
Thu, 21st Jul '05, 10:07pm
So long as you don't actually think about doing anything, it's just a simple compliment on someone's looks.Hey, what's wrong with complimenting someone on looks, smarts, conversation skills or anything? Come on, it's perfectly normal, even between guys or with blood relations. Sexual conversations are a whole different thing from this. You can tell a nun she's pretty, so what? It's bad when the conversation is had to jerk off verbally or prepare the ground for an improper relationship but nothing is wrong with telling people you like them or appreciate them.

Some women actually need strangers to say these things to validate their self-image (sad but true).Everyone needs a kind word every now and then. I guess a sincere and polite compliment is always welcome, whoever and wherever you are. Or at least should be. I've been complimented on my looks by married ladies twice my age, so what?

What I interpret Chev saying/meaning about this can be summed up in three words:

you gotta wanna!

As a (former) Catholic, I can say that even *thinking* about doing *anything* to/with someone is a mortal sin. I could get into a long quote from George Carlin about this, but anyone familiar with him probably knows what I'm talking about. For those who don't, here's a short version of how many *sins* there are in one grope of Helen:

1)To want to feel up Helen
2)To plan to feel up Helen
3)To think about feeling up Helen
4)To find a place to do this to Helen
5)To take her to said place
6)To finally feel up Helen

"Six sins in one feel, man!" To which George also said, "If you wake up and think, I wanna go to 42nd Street and commit a mortal sin! save your cab fare; you just did!"

@Fel - Party animal right here, sweety. I've been stocking up on Pounce[tm] and Whiskas Temptations [tm]. :yum:

100% :D

@kuemper: Stage #1 depends on interpretation. Literally, it would have to be sinful but different people understand "want" as different things. For a mortal sin, you need 1) grave matter, 2) full knowledge, 3) full consent. Attraction alone doesn't carry #3 and possibly not #2. In short, you need to make a choice for it to be a sin; it has to depend on your will. If wanting to feel up Helen is a positive act of will, then it's sinful (internalising a disordered desire is sinful). ;) And I think stage 3 probably happens before stage 2. :D

And yeah, let's throw a party. I'd really use some boozing and some waltzing.

@chev - As I said, listen to some old Carlin for the full take on this. He goes into greater detail than I. And, since we differ on what defines an 'affair', I'll leave it at that. :) With your inherent loquaciousness, this is why you remind me of my hubby. :p

chevalier
Thu, 21st Jul '05, 11:13pm
@kuemper: Different understanding of affair? I mean, what's yours? I mean, for me, anything romantic and/or even slightly sexual has to be an affair and I don't understand the view that, for example, swapping love letters, kissing and getting romantic is not affair if there's no intercourse in it (just swapping compliments, flowers, gifts etc, hugging and kissing on the cheek doesn't cut it but any degree of sexual interaction does already and come on, it's not like kissing isn't cheating). I don't think you hold that view, so...? But if you prefer to leave it alone, I won't complain. :p

Thanks for the chips. Want some booze? I'm sure you do. Come, take a shot.

As I've delved down to the depths of the dirty dishes, I've uncovered smells that have made me gag uncontrollably. I had to turn on a fan to get enough of the smell out of the kitchen to be able to keep working. An unfortunate side-effect of this is that the smell has to go somewhere. So instead of reducing the smell, I'm just spreading it around the entire HOUSE, and now I'm having a hard time finding my appetite so I can have some dinner. I'm going to try to have dinner upstairs, which hopefully isn't as putrid. Wish me luck. :(

I'm not in the states, the doc advised me not to go if I didn't want to compromise my Bachelor 2 year, so I with pain in my heart I decided to stay home and go to bed at 11 p.m. each day, have long walks at the beach and do some therapeutic gardening.

Had to stay away from the net for a week as well.

Also, a friend of mine just got told by a guy that seemed to be interested in her that his friends thought she was not good enough for him (I don't really know the guy, only saw him a couple of times). Because, here it comes, the clothes she wears aren't expensive enough and she doesn't throw around enough money, yes, I was wrapped in stunned silence for a couple of moments too. This is the kind of crap you see happening between 15 year olds in bad teen movies. Somehow women that have a strong personality and brains and dress in a fashionable and original mixture of all sorts of clothes, cheap and expensive instead of just wearing classic all tommy hilfiger or ralph lauren outfits are weird. sure, I have a few pieces of the above mentioned designers, but just because I like them, and if I want to wear them with torn jeans, I won't be stopped by anyone, If I want to wear them with a glimmering sequined skirt and high heels, I won't be stopped by anyone. Bah. I guess It's because we don't let people walk all over ourselves and we don't giggle and smile when a guy speaks to us. I guess that's "intimidating".

The thing is my friend can't take things like that, this is yet another dent in her heavily battered armor. She didn't pass her exams, broke up with her boyfriend of 2 years, a lot of friends are abandoning her etc.. Puh.

I am outraged and in a mood to butcher all snobbishly dressed guys under 20.

@Uytuun: That guy is a funny upstart excuse of a snob. Just about everyone (apart from such morons) knows that part of the charm is hiding the label instead of waving it around. In fact, there is some tommy hillfigger in my wardrobe but the huge label (which is, apparently, the main feature of hillfigger clothes) pisses me off so much I never wear it anymore. Besides, it's casual wear, intended to be casual and not exceptional, so what the hell the fuss is about is beyond me.

I guess It's because we don't let people walk all over ourselves and we don't giggle and smile when a guy speaks to us. I guess that's "intimidating".Yeah, most young adult males can't comprehend anything more complex than a sassy opening "conversation" from a soap opera. Anything more challenging than instant giggle at their very entrance and they move on to the next target. Better for you. ;) :thumb:

Hugs for your friend and hope she's going to recover soon. I'm sure she'll do fine. There's always the "Semptember Campaign", as we call it here (allusion to Semptember '39, hehe). My most sincere congrats for getting rid of the moron, as well. That's a reason to throw a party, not to cry.

One more thing. A girl with class is known by the fact she doesn't need much to make herself look great. I've seen girls completely outfit for a formal ball for 50 euro total and defeat big spenders. Shopping for and matching stuff is the art, not spending. :p

I am outraged and in a mood to butcher all snobbishly dressed guys under 20.That would be too easy on him. And too much bother. Just let him end up with the sassy type he so adores. :D

Actually, it tends to be theologians who study the Bible. Philosophers like to work from first principles, and explain things by pure reason.

Also, the Philosopher's Stone has been a semi-mythological object of alchemy long before Rowling wrote a book about it. No magic necessarily involved in its creation, as far as we know; there's no reason for the American publishers to suddenly dumb down the name to the Sorcerer's Stone. Besides, the topic of everlasting mortal life is a fairly philosophical one, don't you think? ;)

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the original British title of the book. However, the publishers felt that the majority of the American public wouldn't understand the reference to the philosopher's stone ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosopher%27s_stone ), so the title for the American edition of the book was changed. Justifiably?

Well, we had to change *something*. American television has stolen all the good (?) Brit programming and simply changed the title. You ever have one of those moments when you instinctively do the stupidest thing imaginable? That was an awesome battle. The enemies had quite impressive levels compared from my time. My archmage got attacked from start by the freaking hero-killing blademaster, so one ally helped me and the other harassed his closest. Then the two of us moved to join in but the enemies started gathering, so I flared my allies to get the hell away from there and meet in the North elf's base. Tadaaaa... one elf down, flared the other elf and quick march! Defend (anti-missile defensive formation) researched for my sweet footies in the meantime and the other elf went poof. Then I seriously have to start thinking about next year... either go to Uni for 5 or so years or take a few years off to travel overseas.

Busy busy busy....

Well, at my current tabletop game, I seem to either roll really, really well, or abysmally badly. It's kind of funny. My character will bean someone through the eye in one roll, and snap her bowstring the next.

If the DMs are considering it 'toil and work' then they shouldn't be doing it :p

Mosquitoes. They got my left index finger, my righty pinky toe and my arms. IIRC there was only one and my idea was to let it sting once so that it would die. Apparently, I underestimated the little bug.

My toe and finger are quite swollen, I think I could trick a little kid into believing I'm mutating.

Tue, 26th Jul '05, 2:19pm
@Uytuun: I hate those little buggers. They always go for me, it seems. Although I thought it was bees that die when they sting (it rips the poison sac out, taking half the unfortunate insect's innards with it); mosquitoes bite to feed. I've been done several times by a single mossie on more than one occasion; usually they go along my arm or leg, leaving a nice join-the-dots style pattern!

Good luck with the mutation; any thoughts on an appropriate X-men type super power? ;)

@ Ofelix: you've got a point there - the pythagoreans of Ancient Greece did adopt the pentagram as their symbol, tatooing it on the palms of their hands to signify membership. So, it could be argued that the very people who invented maths (at least as the modern world knows it) were indeed in league with Satan. Add to that the power struggle that happened when someone discovered the square root of 2 (being irrational, it can't be expressed as a fraction, which went against the belief in the groups originally that all numbers could be expressed as fractions), in which people died for no real reason, and you could well be right.
:pope: Maths is evil I say! Burn the number-loving witches and their satanically dull textbooks!

I never noticed before. Tal really is a f***ing dragon.

In case any were wondering, my anger for my landlord was due to her not allowing me to take my sattelite with me when I leave because it is attatched to the place. And she said if I did take it, I would be criminaly charged. At times like this, I wish there was a smilie for fingering someone, because that sums up my emotions in this case.

Stefanina
Wed, 27th Jul '05, 6:44am

That doesn't seem right. Don't you have any lawyer friends that could check into your situation so you could force the harpy landlady to be reasonable?

Arahar
Wed, 27th Jul '05, 8:20am
Did you keep any reciept's for your satelite dish. If you did then even if you did attatch it to her property then it's still your's. The only things that you wouldn't be able to take should be listed on your lease agreement, that's not a permanent fixture. I'd advise taking the satelite dish and when SHE goes to press charges just present them with a reciept saying that you bought the satelite on such day for x dollars and she'll be forced to drop the charges OR buy it from you for whatever you want to sell it to her for.
