View Full Version : must have items...
San Ti Mon, 10th Jan '05, 4:42pm well since we all have a sufficient expirienc conserning playing BG2 i would like to ask which are the must have items for you. in my opinion it is the equalizer, the crom fayer, vecnas robe and the celestial fury katana(well it surely cannot compare with the above items but i adore this sword  )
Laiwethel Mon, 10th Jan '05, 4:50pm Amulet of Power, Staff of the Magi and Carsomyr as well as Crom Faeyr, Celestial Fury and Robe of Vecna.
Son of Bhaal Mon, 10th Jan '05, 5:17pm Upgraded flail of the ages and I always seem to get into arguments with people that its better than the celetrial fury...
Blog Mon, 10th Jan '05, 8:07pm Boots of Speed for extra attacks and reduced walking time between far away places.
Some sort of item with regeneration (usually ring) is nice so you don't have to depend on buying or casting healing. (especially early in the game)
And Amulet of Power (negative plane protection) and Flail of Ages.
I've never actually used the Equalizer before, it just sits there in my bag of holding.
Oh yeah... Bag of Holding, scroll cases, and gem bags are quite necessary to carry all the loot!
Nakia Mon, 10th Jan '05, 9:07pm OT: I've never found a scroll case or gem bag in SoA and only gotten a bag of holding later in the game. If someone knows where to find them early in the game I would like to know.
If it is mod which one?
back to topic: The weapon depends on the class the character is. Boots of Speed are great but it is hard to get them for a party of six. And of course if I change the party makeup I sometimes forget to get the stuff back from the dismissed character. Lost a staff I wanted when I dismissed Jahaira.
Kitrax Mon, 10th Jan '05, 9:32pm Hmmm...
Flail of Aages +3/+4/+5, just because it causes so much damage, and the fact that so many characters can use it; Celestial Fury +3, I think this katana is one of the most powerful weapons in the entire game; and of course, the Staff of the Magi. The boots of speed are a must, as is the Amulet of Power; the bag of holding is indispensable to a small party; and the Armor of the Heart is about the best armor you can get in SoA. :rolling:
Laertis Mon, 10th Jan '05, 10:13pm - Amulet of Power is very useful
- All kinds of bags and containers (Jaheira was my queen of the containers)
- Ring of Charisma for the main character and leader
- Crom Faeyr, Carsomyr, etc...well, all the powerful weapons everyone knows...
- Boo <giggles like a kid>
Takara Mon, 10th Jan '05, 10:45pm Shield of cheese (balduran). I just love it. Even though it makes beholder battles a bit easy, it saves me tearing my hair out.
Gilden Mon, 10th Jan '05, 11:14pm Here are a few useful things, some are taken for granted, much like the gem bag and scroll case listed earlier. Most of this stuff is (or can be) acquired early enough to be useful for large parts of the game.
Red Dragon scale armour (-1 AC and 50% resist fire)
Ilbratha shortsword
Daystar longsword
Ring of Gaxx
Korgan
Dwarven throwing hammer (allows strength bonus on missile weapon)
Potions of clarity (stop confusion/fear/charm etc) and shield of Harmony +2 for the same reason
Potions of extra healing (great timesaver)
Shadow Dragon Scale (can perform thief functions with it)
And finally, I really would like to experiment more with the ring of the Ram, maybe this time around it will survive the greedy Nishru.
Jathszu Khatharua Tue, 11th Jan '05, 12:43am OT: Nakia - I've just checked where you can find scroll case and gem beg.
Scroll case : Lady Yuth (Adventurer's Mart), Galoomp the Bookkeeper (Waukeen's Promenade; x=3325, y=295), Ikert (Docks; x=1930, y=2428)
Gem bag: Storekeep (Bridge; x=2448, y=2290)
I think there is more but I can't remember where.
It isn't mod. I hope this will help. :)
Splunge Tue, 11th Jan '05, 1:15am Depends on who's in my party, but generally:
Boots of Speed
Ribald's Strength Belt
Ribald's ring
C'Fury
F'Ages
Belm
Vecna
Steeze Tue, 11th Jan '05, 1:49am Why Belm splunge? I know it has the extra attack, but isn't it only +1 to hit and damage, it will become a bit useless later in the game.
back to topic:
Robes of Vecna
Crom
C'Fury
F'Ages
Carsomyer
boots of speed
amulet of power
that all off the top of my head.
Shalladeth Tue, 11th Jan '05, 1:49am I don't even bother keeping the parts to the Equalizer because I've never used it. I always end up keeping a fiery longsword for the trollses, amulet of power and helm of charm protection for the vamps, Flail of Ages and Crom Faeyr for the golems, and as many bottles of Oil of Fiery Burning as I can find.
Ziad Tue, 11th Jan '05, 10:30am Since we're in SOA-only land, meaning the Cloak of Mirroring reflects spells back at the caster... I'd say this is THE must-have item. It practically grants you immunity to all damaging spells (since the AI always targets area-effect spells at you anyway)
Robe of Vecna are a close second, with Boots of Speed being there too for sheer convenience. Ring of Gaxx is pretty good too.
Scythe Tue, 11th Jan '05, 3:04pm @Terthe
Belm is great as an off hand weapon because it increases the hits with main hand. Therefore if you combine it with CF or something similar you get a whole extra attack with your uber weapon.
Furthermore imp haste doubles this! So you can get to 10 attacks per round. Belm is a must :D

Splunge Tue, 11th Jan '05, 3:21pm @ Terthe - Scythe summed up Belm perfectly. :)
Kundane does the same thing, but it's a short sword and so does a bit less damage.
And I believe Belm is +2, not +1. Kundane is +2 as well.
Capt Massacre Tue, 11th Jan '05, 10:54pm "Korgan" LOL handy!
Equalizer: the time you finish it, it isn't very useful anymore.
Crom Faeyr: in my experience, it's better to keep the separate items, I don't understand the fuss.
Vecna robe: not in the standard game, same for the Balduran shield, so I don't use it.
Belm and Kundane: I prefer a good shield.
Carsomyr: you get it pretty late too, normally, wouldn't call it a must-have. Plus, in my experience, it isn't that awesome, it doesn't prevent Prig to be slaughtered.
Celestial Fury: I'm not that impressed, sorry!
My must have:
Ribald's ring (shame thief!), Flail of Ages (+3, SOA only), Amulet of Power, Cloak of Cheese.
And of course I never fail to get the rest (Bag of Holding, Gaxx ring, Balduran helmet...)
Klorox Wed, 12th Jan '05, 4:55am @ Slayer of the Coast: I agree. I think the Flail of the Ages is better than Celestial Fury.
@ Blog: Boots of Speed don't grant an extra attack (even though the "Haste" icon shows up).
@ Nakia Nightshadow: The scroll cases and gem bags can be bought from many different merchants. I know the scroll merchants in Waukeen's Promenade and the Adventurer's Mart both sell the scroll cases.
---
I always pick up the Ring of Free Action (this goes on my Cleric no matter what). I like the Boots of Speed (or two!), the Robe of Vecna, the Cloak of Mirroring, and the Amulet of Power. The Shield of Balduran just saves so many headaches, like Takara said. The Rings and Cloaks of Protection +2 are great, and my favorite weapon is the Flail of Ages (as hinted above, it gets even better in ToB). The Bag of Holding is great, as are Tansheron's Bow and the Staff of the Magi. No ring is better than the Ring of Gaxx.
NonSequitur Wed, 12th Jan '05, 5:21am I tend to play part-warrior classes (dual or multi), so I'm biased, but my must-have, in no particular order, are:
Amulet of Power
Bag Of Holding
Belm
Book Of Infinite Spells
Boots Of Speed
Celestial Fury
Cloak Of Mirroring
Dak'kon's Zerth Blade (awesome off-hand weapon for F/M or Blade)
Daystar (take THAT, Bodhi!)
Equaliser (typically off-hand weapon)
Flail Of Ages
Flame Tongue sword (long story from my PnP days)
Mace Of Disruption
Mauler's Arm
Red Dragon Plate
Ring Of Gaxx
Shadow Dragon Leather
Staff Of The Magi
Water's Edge
If I'm evil, add the Skull Of Death to that list. If I'm not, add Carsomyr instead. Crom Faeyr... I can take it or leave it, although it is handy for dealing with Absolute Immunity and just about anything in melee.
omnigodly Wed, 12th Jan '05, 7:21am Crom Faeyr
Blackrazor, (yes I kill the genie and keep this sexy sexy sword).
Carsomyr
Amulet of power
Robe of Vecna
Flail of Ages
these items beat the game every time :)
Khemsa Tue, 18th Jan '05, 2:50pm I always play some kind of mage multi-class, so:
Amulet of Power
Bag Of Holding
Boots Of Speed
Cloak Of Mirroring
Ring Of Gaxx
Staff Of The Magi
Robe of Vecna
Or, replace any of the above with the appropriate item from the Stuff of the Magi Mod.
Hydragyrum Sat, 22nd Jan '05, 9:08pm I am Playing a Paladin (Undead Hunter)
The Armour of the Hart and Sentinel Shield +4 are invaluable when standing toe to toe with big monsters. The Helm of Beldarren and Ring of Earth Control, along with a Dext. of 19 give me an AC of -13. The Cloak of mirroring completes my protection. Add the Sling of Seeking and any one of the better Longswords and the result is a tank on two legs.
A ring of fire resistance is also useful because I can survive charging a group of spell-casters while my 3 mages hurl in a salvo of fireballs.
Does anyone know where I can find a +3 clothes brush to remove the soot afterwards?
Dendri Sat, 22nd Jan '05, 9:35pm ... plus the Ring of the Ram. A priceless item, mainly for spell-disruption. Preventing a Timestop can make a sweet difference.
Aces Sat, 22nd Jan '05, 9:49pm @ Nakia Nightshadow
OT: I've never found a scroll case or gem bag in SoA and only gotten a bag of holding later in the game. If someone knows where to find them early in the game I would like to know.
If it is mod which one?
You can get scroll cases and gem bags in the shops.
I found 4 scroll cases and 3 gems bags in shops in the first few areas in Athkatla (Waukeen's, Slums, Docks).
Minh So Sun, 23rd Jan '05, 3:59pm I rarely use Casolmyr these days :D
Hydragyrum Wed, 26th Jan '05, 7:37pm [snip]
Having just done two levels, I must add a Rod of Ressurection to my list of Must Have Items. :p

Ancient Galatan Wed, 26th Jan '05, 7:42pm The equipment from the Demonknight Lord in the Underdark, after you sacrificed an animal on Demogorgon's altar.
Man, what a fight you get from its guards.
Hydragyrum Thu, 27th Jan '05, 5:39pm Well you can't expect the guards to have nice tools and not use them!
The Shaman Fri, 28th Jan '05, 4:17am yeah, but why is only one of them carrying de beeg loot?
(grins greedily)
Anyway, I second the idea about beltS of strength. I usually play a warrior-heavy party (multi and/or dual class cleric and rogue-mage, the rest warriors) and it helps to have all your party save the mage at 20+ Str
San Ti Sat, 29th Jan '05, 8:34am one question if i work for bodhi do i get amulet of power?
Sparhawk the Pandion Sat, 29th Jan '05, 3:24pm I think you can get it from Aran's corpse.
San Ti Sat, 29th Jan '05, 6:08pm ok thank you
