Obsidian Entertainment (http://www.obsidianent.com/) announced today that they are developing Neverwinter Nights 2. Of course, their NWN2 forum (http://forums.obsidianent.com/index.php?showforum=21) already contains dozens of threads discussing just about everything about this upcoming title.

Here's a clip from a news post on GameSpot (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/08/04/news_6104090.html):

In a statement, Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart expressed his gratitude at taking over the venerated franchise. “BioWare and Atari created an immense community of players attracted by both the immersion of an interactive gaming experience and the ability to create their own pen-and-paper-styled modules. Neverwinter Nights changed the very nature of role-playing games,” he said. Atari executive producer John Hight was also excited, saying, “Feargus and his team at Obsidian Entertainment are the best people on the planet to take up where BioWare left off and bring this great game to new level."

IGN (http://pc.ign.com/articles/535/535696p1.html) and NWVault (http://nwvault.ign.com/NWN2/) also have some more info and concept art. An official announcement will be posted shortly.

Neverwinter Nights 2's release date has been set for 2006.

Well that's good news, atleast I know it is made by people with some expirience from D&D. Any thoughts about will it become multiplayer oriented (which I consider the original NWN was) or singleplayer oriented?

Now we'll just have to wait where the Atarai roulette will throw BG3. :D

I just hope Atari won't screw up on this one like they did with ToEE...

Eh, I don't really see the need for a sequel to NWN (not that I played the original, but the overwhelming impression I got was that there wasn't anything worth continuing in the single player, and multiplayer wise there's DA coming out...)

Same kind of thing for BG3 really...

Yeah, I'm kind of wondering why there's any reason to continue NWN, I mean the OC campaign had a terrible story, although the expansions were better.

Why there's a reason? The game sold over a million copies, all the reason ANYONE needs to make a sequel. It was a bestseller, along with the expansions, so a sequel is the logical next step.
