I don't care what rules are used, as long as the game is fun.

When you first start the game I think its a necesity to have the rules, play from start to finish with no cheese...then...bring on the mods and have some fun :D

I only play NWN so that kind of skewed my vote, but I agree, the rules aren't that important as long as they work well.

When 2E was the current edition, D&D was a unique system; the badge carried some distinct quality. At present, D&D has changed greatly and become a different system compared to the previous editions. In fact, 3E was already more similar to the system used in Might and Magic series than D&D 2E. Positive AC, positive to hit bonus, followed by damage bonus, same XP requirement for all classes to level up, weapons and armour having a broad range of diverse effects rather than focusing on "pluses" - it was all in Might and Magic before d20 came to existence. The current 3.5 E continues the progress on the path to something completely different from to where 2E led. I can't say I don't like this new system. Quite contrary, I enjoy it. However, I see it as less and less D&D. D20 is not really D&D in my head.

D&D badge doesn't make a game good. Lack of it doesn't make it any worse. Might and Magic stands a proud example of this. So does the unforgettable Fallout 1-2. However, rules systems can take lots off playability (Arcanum is an example here, so is Dungeon Siege and several RPG I've decided not to play) and using D&D rules removes the danger.

I wonder what the final shape of the Dragon Age rules system will be. It has the potential to compete with D&D. The fact it won't be D&D makes it quite refreshing, although there's a big chance it will be a D&D clone.
