Having real trouble with this area despite party being ready for Elvan City.
Party:
Me - Wizard Slayer Lvl16
Mincs
Valgyer
Jaheira
Imoen
Aerie
Only major items im short of are Caroysmer spelling) and Gaaxx Ring.
Tried all sorts of summons (i.e. 2 Nashiru + Earth and Fire Elemental + Djinn) loads of usual spells to party. (Skins, Strngth, Haste, Prot from etc..)
Seem unable to hit the two mages effectively or take down their defenses despite using Pierce Magic, Breach etc....
So ideas?

You could try using Imoen's set trap abilities though they will no doubt fail. Also you could use hordes of cloudkills and stack them in the main room, then bring on the enermys. Also DON'T GIVE UP, you'll get it, eventually. You could try reducing the difficulty for the duration of the battle. You could also try and beat enermys one by one while staying out of range of the others. I hope there is something useful in all this and I'm really happy to see someone playing the normally neglected wizard slayer, good on you. Oh yeah that reminds me you should also try using the slayer change, 2 rep isn't gonna kill you.
Cheers, Void.
I forgot to mention before that you could try Jaheira's insect swarm/plauge and Valygar's backstabbing abilities,
Cheers, Void.(again)

You know what you will encounter. Buy some different spell trigger / sequencer spells, so you can cast much at the same time. Make an offensive one and one with many spell removing spells. Buy the lvl 9 spell Spellstrike, it will remove all protections. Pierce Shield is also great. And maybe Melf's Minor Meteors are also here the solution.

if you run into the room with all the people in it (as opposed to hiding in the little room and getting your a** kicked by shangralar (?) ) does shangie follow or just wait in the room, I have only played that room a couple of times, and always lost 2 people

Believe it or not, one of the best tactics I found in that area was to have a couple, only a couple, of party members invisible (okay, improved invisible). The tanks get beat on as usual and draw the attention of the others while the invisible casters do their things generally uninterrupted. The fact that they stayed in the entryway and didn't venture into the room might have had a major impact also - or maybe it was merely the prot scroll they also had each used.... I tend to think both were influences.

Actually, major item you are missing since you're NOT in Chapter 2 is Mace of Disruption +2.
Get it and say goodbye to darn lich and the vampire. ;)
